After spending a week in the Kirikiri Maximum Prison in Lagos, jailed top notcher of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, cheered up on Monday after the ruling party showed concern about his plight. A prison source told Daily Sun that Bode George’s excitement began after he had a meeting with an unnamed national officer of the PDP and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who is believed to have been briefed to take over George’s defence.

The meeting, which the source claimed lasted about three hours also had the former security adviser to the late head of state Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha in attendance.
Since George was incarcerated, he had been in close contact with Al-Mustapha who is also detained in the same prison.

Daily Sun gathered prior to the Sunday evening meeting, George had been moody but he had suddenly become excited, apparently after hopes of his wriggling out of the jail mess were kindled.
The source revealed that “since after the meeting, George has started eating normally. This Monday morning, he was seen singing and whistling.”
Daily Sun further gathered that although George had been given a prison uniform “but he has refused to wear the uniform.”

Asked why the wearing of the uniform had not been enforced, the source said, “well, for now the authorities have not enforced it, but that will only be temporary, because he must wear the uniform as he is a prisoner.”
Earlier on Sunday, George along with 10 men, led by a priest had a devotional service in the prison.
Daily Sun gathered that the men were led into the prison patio by the priest at about 10.30 a.m.

According to a source the service began at about 10.45 a.m with a short prayer conducted by the lead priest, followed by some minutes of exhortation, enjoining the convict to hold his peace and allow God to fight for him.
Speaking further, the source noted that George was dedicated and submissive during the worship serviced, adding that after the exhortation by the leader they were served with the Holy Communion.

Asked if the five others jailed along with George took part in the devotional service the source said, “No, I didn’t see any of them, they said they wanted to visit Chief George alone and after all they didn’t order for their presence.” The service, which lasted for about 30-minute ended with a prayer by one of the visitors, asking God to intervene in his George’s case.

Last Monday, George who was a former chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA board between 2001 and 2003 was convicted and sentenced along with five other members of the board for disobedience to lawful order, abuse of office and contract splitting. Other convicted former members of the board include former managing director of NPA, Aminu Dabo, Captain Olugbenga Abidoye, Alhaji Aminu Tafida, Alhaji Zanna Madaribe and Engineer Sule Aliyu.

They were sentenced and convicted by a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja which found them guilty of 35 out of the 68-count charge preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a N85 billion contract scam which took place under George’s tenure as the NPA board chairman.
George and his co-convicts were arraigned on August 8, 2008 on a 182-count charge which was later amended and reduced to a 69-count charge over alleged contract splitting, inflation of contracts, conspiracy and disobedience to lawful order. The trial lasted 14 months.

When the going is good, they are ordinary church goers, but when they find themselves in serious trouble, they now run from one priest to the other. He must wear that prison uniform. grin grin grin
