The Senate on Wednesday asked the Nigerian Communications Commission to immediately stop planned data tariff hike.

The Senate said before any such hike could be announced all parties should be consulted.

The planned hike doesn't make sense anyway. NCC as a regulator has no business dictating prices to telecoms operator. If new entrants into the communication sector have no grand strategy on how to capture a significant share of the market other than bribing NCC officials to force other operators to hike data prices, they they should quietly exit the market for more serious operators to come in. When Etisalat entered the market, MTN, Glo and Airtel were not forced to reduce call rate to help them capture a share of the market. They came in with their strategy and today, they are doing well.

The telecoms sector was liberalised so that Nigerians can benefit from the resultant price competition. NCC should not be allowed to kill the liberalisation with this poorly thought out and draconian price fixing regime. .
