Boleyndynasty2:And how has the government helped the rich??... Am not saying I support him In any way but his policies affects every1.. Stop specifying rich people.. Note I don't come from a rich home... We are managing what we have.. but I believe you should stop accepting being poor and strive to be rich as well.. You not the only one being affected.. Just because some can afford it more than others does not mean we all should not be taxed justly and equally. |

adedayoa2:If the FG had not been deducting the correct taxes before and decided to start deducting it now without asking for arrears, why are they claiming their salary was slashed? |

jusRadical:So if 10k is deducted from source instead of 20k on a 100k salary given the worker a net pay of 90k and the government realises and decides to deduct the full tax of 20k giving a net of 80k, how does that amount to a slash? I am afraid Seunmsg you quoted is right. |

The headline is very misleading and probably mischievous. FG did not slash salary,it only applied the appropriate tax mechanism. The shenanigans of the past must not continue, very much inline with the Change agenda! |

Kamnelly: 1.You did not have to insult me. 2.Well, our economy is dependent on oil, so once oil prices fall, our economy falls with it. We have been there before....in the 1980's. 3.As for electricity... a) A large percentage of Nigerians and government agencies do not pay light bills....hampering funding of the sector.(We need meters, really....) b) What makes things worse is that we actually need trillions to get light working 24/7. (That is part of the reason why GEJ privatized power...because he felt the private sector had a better chance of raising the funds.) 4.Thing is, I am not particularly fond of this govt's economic polices. They seem to be more fixated on getting the oil prices up....which won't happen again (because everyone now produces oil....OPEC is not as powerful as they used to be )...than getting Nigeria diversified. But even then, diversification is going to take ages.It isn't a one year thing. And anyway, our budget since 2015...has been lean because...oil has been falling (GEJ's minister of Finance Okonjo-Iweala warned Nigerians in 2015 to expect hard times due to the falling oil price...whoever was in charge.). 5.I guess that one way out of the recession is to actually reduce taxes, and increase government spending. Won't work in Nigeria for two reasons i) Many Nigerians would save, rather than spend...thus negating any attempt to stimulate the economy. ii) And anyway, where are we going to get the extra money from? Our budget is tied to the oil price....and with oil prices falling PLUS the fact that we are paying off loans from the past, and taking new ones now....where is the money going to come from? (Answer...another loan...which means more burdens for our grandchildren). It is a tough road yet...whoever is in charge. 1 Like |

Re: FG Slashes Civil Servants' Salaries Weeks Before Christmas Pix by Nobody: 10:13am On Dec 02, 2016 |
dustydee: Read Seummsg's message again. Civil servants do not have a choice on whether to pay taxes or not. Their taxes are deducted at source. This means that telling them to pay their taxes is missinformation because they do not have control over tax deductions. Moreover, is there any upward review of personal income tax? Please go and verify, many fg workers including lecturers are paid not full salaries presently. Rather, they are paid a certain percentage of the remuneration and this percentage varies. Investigate my friend, move around, ask questions please. |

richidinho: This is not a new policy. The cevil servants were only implementing the tax codes on private sectors only. They have been carefully avoiding paying tax the legal way. All the government has done is to do the right thing. |

chrismilayo2: Can the NMA seek arbitration for this? But taxes are complex and you need experts to interprete it. The simple rule of thumb is that anything above N16,000 should be taxed. When LSIRS swooped in on us some years ago, virtually everything was brought under the tax bracket 1 Like |

adedayoa2: In the implementation of PAYE under PITA, the responsibility to deduct and remit is that of the employer, whether private or public. However, FIRS and other relevant state internal revenue services have the powers to review and audit the remittance to ensure the deduction is in line with the provisions of the PITA. If it was found that the taxes were been under deducted, they can order and enforce full deduction in compliance with the law. So, to answer your question, the various MDA's that under deducted staff taxes should be blamed. |

k2kay: OK, that's good.... By increasing government spending, government saves the idle production outputs and hence sustain the production activities. The continued productions benefits people by giving them wages, interest, rent, and profits. In the end, people's income and buying power increase. Except that the government does not have the cash to give. Oil prices, and oil output have fallen from $100 in 2014 to $30 11 months ago (now it is $50). We no longer have the income to fund extra government spending. Secondly by cutting the tax, government let people have more disposable income. Disposable income is an income AFTER tax. The intention for a more disposable income is that people are able to spend more in the markets and hence sustain the economy. Problem is, in a recession, if you offer tax cuts, you end up with people saving more...and spending less....thus negating the possible positive effects of increased disposable income. Add the fact that we are still heavily dependent on imports....which means money flying out...and even if Nigerians spend more...more money in the form of hard currency will fly out. (We no longer have enough hard currency to buffer the naira)....leading to more problem for the economy. Either oil goes up to $100 and higher again, or we take another IMF loan, or we tighten our seat-belts more. |

DjAndroid: .....and does this question invalidate the need to interpret the tax laws properly? Bros, apart from understanding that there is room for error, there is also provision for proper interpretation of the law. If it has been done wrongly in the past, then there should be a time to correct it. |

devilson: Well....we can deduct the taxes of the rich political elite (I think it is a good idea) but in the long run, it won't make much difference....so long as we are not earning enough revenue from oil, and actively fighting corruption. |
