You need to broaden your knowledge if you are not aware that the last government amended personal income tax laws. Anyone that has been paying taxes regularly should know that. seunmsg: |

jusRadical:Being paid half salary is different from reduced salary due to application of correct tax rate. I used to work for the FG and my PAYE was quite low compared to my colleagues in Lagos on the same pay in the same company. This was identified a few years ago and for the past 2 or so years, my former colleagues have seen their taxes increased every year until they reach the require tax level. The phased increase was done in order to reduce the "shock" it will have on people's take home if it was removed at once. That there's no change in our existing tax laws does not mean that people have been paying the correct tax rate. |

dustydee: Please read my comment well before replying. The summary of my comment is: 1) Govt workers do not pay their taxes personally but their taxes are deducted at source, so the issue of they should pay their taxes is misleading: they do not pay it themselves but deducted directly by their employer. 2) Many fg workers are presently on a certain percentage of their salaries and this percentage varies. Ok? 1 Like |

There is no salary reduction here. All these misinformed reporters and bloggers sef. This is a simple tax reduction from Income Before Tax. Other civilized countries deduct income taxes and mortgage taxes before payment of Net Income. but Nigeria just started having sense to deduct theirs and workers are misinterpreting it. jusRadical:1. Asking them to pay their taxes does not imply that they should physically go and pay their taxes, in this context he meant they should pay the correct tax due. 2. I am aware that some receive half pay. I cannot confirm from the letter that that is the case. Surely whoever wrote that memo would have said so if that were the case. |

mapet:Just made a quick read through of the tax law and I see you are right! But a full implementation this very time is not fair on the workers. A good number of civil servants have banks loans, cooperative savings/loans and so on and are calculative with what they have left. You don't make them get this type of news when they get alert or see their payslip. |

dustydee: Please how does a civil servant whose tax is deducted at source by his employer be told to pay correct tax? Does the worker have control over his tax deductions? My friend, it is those who pay directly to the govt like company income tax, businessmen, traders, etc whose taxes are usually based on what they declare as earnings that you can tell to pay correct tax and not those whose taxes are deducted at source. |

adedayoa2: According to the law, the employer must deduct the correct taxes from staff salary before paying the balance. The employer will be held responsible for failure to comply with the provisions of the law. As regards who should pay, yes, the employers may bear the penalties for none or partial compliance but going forward, the individual staff will have to bear the brunt of the full payment of their taxes and that is what is happening. Government is not asking anybody to pay penalties for past under deduction, they are only saying we should all pay what is due under the law going forward. 1 Like |

[quote author=seunmsg post=51559413]Implementing the law properly should not be termed as salary reduction. My salary was not reduced in any way because I have been paying my full tax previously. People should pay their taxes accordingly and stop complaining and misinforming the public. I thought that govt usually deduct tax before payment of salaries? |

seunmsg: Stop being funny dear. So if a civil servant loses N50k on a salary of N140k, its proper taxation according to you ? Who implements tax before now ? isn't it deducted at source ? Again, just 5 agencies have been affected so wait for your turn... just the usual Nigerian lack of empathy and trying to sound intelligent with little experience. 2 Likes |

jusRadical:They have not been asked to pay correct tax but the government has taken the correct tax and they are complaining. Mind you some of these government agencies and even private companies deliberately under pay income taxes but it seems government is determined to get it's fair due. |

Sophious: 1. FIRS is on a mission to recover all "recoverables" as that will be the yardstick of their performance. So it is understable why now or anytime. 2. Unfortunately many managers do not manage people's expectations well. In a unionised private sector, you can hardly get away with this. As soon as they got the clarification from FIRS, the right thing to do is to call a staff meeting and explain the situation and implication to the staff. If this was not done, then the fvcked up |

The issue is Buhari is a dictator so he can never learn to do things the right way. Consolidated tax free allowance of N200,000 or 1% of gross income, whichever is higher, plus 20% of the gross income is protected by the current tax laws. If Buhari and his incompetent advisers want to tax all the workers' income they need to change the law. Not doing that is A DISREGARD FOR THE LAW. seunmsg: |

When our 'brothers' in the SS keep blowing pipelines, do you want him to start printing money. He has to shore up revenue which is why taxes keep going up. Blowing things does nobody no good. Buhari hardly seems concerned, crude will be imported from Niger. Revenue shortfalls will be borne by the masses and the SS bears the Environmental Problems that come with vandalising oil and gas pipelines. |
