They fly them abroad for treatment. Haven't you heard the saying that physician heal thyself. Where he can't heal himself then he must be flown abroad because what he knows here in Nigeria another one knows it.

Lol @ Tunji.

Of course docs are reluctant to seek medical help. The belief that it's all under control.
Docs dedicate their lives to serve others so that most will still go to work in clutches & pain. shocked

At the end of the day, it depends on individual doctors. Younger medics in my observation tend to be more willing to see seniors for medical advise than the older generation. Many of those oldies have never seen another doctor since they became doctors themselves. grin

Medical couples tend to see each other.

They sometimes diagnose themselves and self medicate.......but not before asking colleagues and spouses(who are usually in the health sector) for opinions.

Lol but all doctors are physicians. I was thinking you were going to name another specialist department away from gynaecology

You beat me to it. A gynecologist would sure need another gynecologist if in labor likewise a surgeon if he needs to be operated

As a doctor, you have a list of mediocre doctors programmed in your brain that you and your family members must avoid. This is a secret you take to the grave.

You go by trust or by referral from a trusted colleague.

If it's a simple self - diagnosis job, he/she treats themselves. But, if it's a major or minor intervention, they go and prostrate in front of another DR.

Let us get one thing right first –I am not a doctor. Now, that we got that out of the way, I can continue with my article from my perspective as a layman and patient to some doctors. Remember, if there are no patients there would not be need for doctors.

I was very inquisitive as a child with many questions running through my mind, one of the ones I remember vividly is: what happens to the food we ate? Do we have eba in our head for example or rice in our hands? Of course, I later learnt digestion in primary school (I cannot remember the class but I am sure it would be about the same class where you learnt it too).

Another big question which was quite logical to me at the time is: who do doctors go to for treatment when they fall ill (or sick as we say in Naija English)? Up till today I have not gotten a clear answer. Sure, I know doctors see other doctors for treatment but what I am not sure of is if they do so willingly or grudgingly. You know like Doctor Hope is examining Doctor Faith and the latter is thinking in her mind –‘what does she even know sef? I was smarter than her in med school’. Is this what happens to some doctors or do they willingly revert to the role of the patient that follows the doctor’s advice (pun intended)?

Another way of looking at this is the economics of it; why should one doctor pay another for a service that in theory at least they can provide for themselves? I might think like this if I were a doctor and I would love to know what doctors think and what their experiences are on the subject.

There is a saying that goes, "the doctor who treats himself has a fool for a patient".
Doctors are advised to seek treatment or help from other practitioners. Because, sometimes a doctor might not be able to be objective when he is the subject. Imagine a doctor who despite seeing all the symptoms of HIV, but would treat the symptoms as if it were a common flu, simply because he/she wouldn't want to confess to himself that he probably has HIV. In fact, doctors are advised to not treat cases where they themselves or people they know are involved, also because of the problem of objectivity. Doctors are human, a doctor may feel so much emotional trauma because his son is dying, that he might not be able to detach his emotional self from his professional self, thereby getting himself in the way of proper treatment for the sick child.
Imagine another scenario where said doctor is unconscious, in this case, he clearly can't treat himself. His care would have to be delegated to a professional who is competent.
How about during a surgery, I don't imagine I know a doctor who can perform a major surgery on himself. Maybe there are?
There are many reasons why doctors shouldn't treat themselves or even loved ones! But then again, there are also many reasons why they should.
Now let me ask you, Should a judge judge his/her own case?

I am a doctor, I don't fall sick often, I think because I try to take precautions. If I see symptoms, I start myself on drugs immediately, and that settles it. I have not had any cause to consult anybody concerning my health.... this is wrong, because we are humans, and we should have our own doctors. We should go for regular checkups and get treatment as at when due. I must let u know that doctors don't bill one another the way other patients are billed, most of the time, it is free because we see ourselves as brothers in the profession.

There is much wisdom in your post. I have always been curious about the issue. As for judges, they are obviously not allowed to judge their own cases.

I don't know about other countries but Doctors in Nigeria hmm... They will rather die silent and painfully, than to consult a fellow (Quack) doctor for help angry you will always see them walking with outright arrogance, yelling and humiliating sick patients in various hospitals across the country; that's one aspect of their job they are very good at, apart from administering wrong diagnosis. God help us.

From your comment, its clear you never saw the four walls of a higher institution. If you did, am very sure you won't be talking like this. I know the Nigerian doctors are not the best, but they aren't as bad as you're trying to paint them.
You sound like someone who took to another course after 6 years of trying to get admitted to study medicine and surgery. Don't worry, we understand your pains bro.
