N12.5m fraud: EFCC nabs banker
From AMOS DUNIA, Abuja
Wednesday, November 11, 2009

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested an official of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Mr Olajide Ogundipe, for defrauding the bank to the tune of N12.5 million. The bank had on September 4, 2009, petitioned the EFCC, alleging fraudulent withdrawal of money from the bank’s ATM in excess of N12 million by a staff of the Lokoja branch, Mr. Ogundipe. The bank had observed that some unexplainable entries were passed between one of its Assets Accounts and its ATM at its Lokoja branch.

In the course of investigation, EFCC operatives discovered that sometime in March, 2009, Ogundipe, who works at the Lokoja branch of the bank, posted a debit entry of N450, 000.00 to the Assets Account and credited the ATM with same value, which was subsequently taken out in bulk cash from the ATM machine after close of business.

Further investigation also revealed that several other similar entries in excess of N12 million were posted and subsequently withdrawn in the same manner.
Ogundipe, who confessed to the crime after his arrest, said he spent the money to sponsor his wedding in 2008. He explained that he made the withdrawals, usually a minimum of N500,000, each time he loaded the three ATM machines in Lokoja. “Thereafter, I would manipulate the posting to balance the account,” he confessed.

The Osun State-born banker, who said he joined FCMB in September 2008 after three years with a new generation bank in Abuja, said he never kept the stolen money in the bank but in his brief case at his Lokoja home and unknown to his wife who resides in Karu, Abuja.
After the confessional statement, Ogundipe promised to return the stolen money and made good his promise when his lawyer, Barrister Ibrahim Muktari, brought to EFCC an FCMB draft of N9,000,000 dated October 22, 2009. He had earlier paid N3, 500,000.00 of the stolen money.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court soon.

I have always said it that, a bulk of financial fraud in Nigerian banking system, were manipulated by insiders. Soon, you will hear there is an ATM fraud team or racket in Nigeria. Most of them will be bankers.

I can imagine his wife telling her friends of how successful their wedding went and they will congratulate her in return. This is what happens in Nigeria; majority celebrate wealth even when its ill - gotten.

I bet the guy was overwhelmed by the lavish wedding ceremonies he sees on TV and the tabloids. . .
What a shame! sad

This might sound a bit absurd. The Human resources departments of Organizations should not only concern themselves with recruitment only. i think they should focus more on counseling. The rate of fraud occurrences is becoming alarming and this can be mitigated if there are period financial counseling for employees.

There should also be an overhaul of the societal values that place so much importance on material things. This era of people spending so much on weddings, buying new SUV s, nightclubbing, family pressure etc.
Business processes should also be monitored to identify risk factors and implement controls.

I blame the BANK for this FRAUD.

CBN should actually fine FCMB.

What manner of country is this Nigeria!

It should not be possible for anyone to withdraw more than N1million naira from ATM within a 30-day calendar period.

This is basic business rule that could have been coded into the ATM.

Also 'auto-alert' should be sent to EFCC or CBN whenever anyone withdraws N2mil within 60-day calendar period from ATM

I bet you he is never satisfied. His former handle is MeKusLoKo and he feeds from tribalism. There is another one known as YommyUK, he is a formidable Yoruba tribalist and these guys are so drenched in it that tpia's form of tribalism is outdated.

I am beginning to suspect that some posters on nairaland might not be nigerians at all. Infact they might not even be black.

This is because i have analysed that who is going to gain if there is trouble in nigeria in terms of ethnic . . . war. Nigerians would not benefit instead its people outside nigeria that would benefit. Hence i am begginning to suspect that people like Mekuslogan might actually not be nigerians but rather foreigners trying to create mistrust and hatred between the young generations of nigerians.

I live in the west and i know it is something quite possible . . . it is something that can be done when people are trying to engage in geopolitical engineering.

I would advise people to please just ignore this mekuslogan of a person . . . and continue to report his post for banning so that contious banning would contribute to his leaving nairaland alone . . .

I dont want to be dragged into Yoruba or no Yoruba controversy, but why are Yoruba's so much in fraudulent activities?

You and I know that your statement is not true and that there are Hausas, Yorubas and Igbos in all kinds of fraud . . .its only the reported ones that gain publicity. Most people on the street of nigeria fear an igbo man more than they fear a yoruba man when it comes to fraud.

So at the end of the day . . . its really a subjective matter to say someone is more fraudulent than others . . .

This would be my last post on this topic . . . cus i know mekuslogan or whoever it is is benefiting from having yorubas and igbos antagonise each other . . .

@mekuslogan

i know u are using multiple identities and pretending to be someone else both good and bad . . .just know that i have started watching and tracking you now . . . people like you are more dangerous than even the blatant racist cus its people like you that are actually hell bent on starting wars.

YOU ARE BEING WATCHED AS FROM NOW ONWARDS. . .

It is said, whoever that is caught stealing, is regarded as a thief!. If it is the Yoruba's that are the most caught, then they are most fraudulent!. Shekinah!

Is that how you do your maths. Did you consider the population of yorubas with respect with other tribes before making that assumption? embarassed embarassed embarassed

This is how I came to conclusion. If you have 10 Yorubas, 8 Igbos, and 12 Hausas from a particular survey and the result reads thus:

Yorubas 4

Igbos 3

Hausas 4

Tell me then, who has the highest number of Fraudsters?

There you all go again, reducing important issues to 'ethnic group'

This is why Nigeria will not make any progress.

There has been a breach, it does not matter who, what matters are measures to be in place against such breach in the future!

The rot in the country, and as it is in this case, the banking sector, is beginning to manifest. Very soon, you will hear more of similar issues being uncovered!. There is corruption everywhere in this land. It is GOD Himself that will save us.

I tell you, ATM banking in Nigeria is a no go area. I have always said it times without number, that insiders are the ones that are aiding ATM card numbers theft and cloning. Any one with this sad experience?

This is just the beginning of more revelations. Very soon, you will know, there is a clique in that sector that specialises in ATM fraud in Nigeria.
