That you were allowed doesn't mean its allowed by the LAW. Nigeria is a lawless country so anything goes na ! The scenario of your brother inlaw signing for your hubby is actually pardonable because he can act as a Guardian. But that of your female friend is wrong according to LAW.

So you won't talk poo to me bcuz we are on Nairaland.

I had to go dig it up, Because i remember my Dad telling me sometime ago that i can't do this without parents consent, and you are now telling me otherwise.

you do realise that what you quoted consent is needed for those below age 21

I beg to disagre with u. Church white wedding is not cost demanding, but we impose it on ourselves. After the white wedding which doesnt cost much, u may take on a low key reception or no reception at all

U spend less compare to church white wedding that will make some people to wed on borrowed money.

Nice posts. What will then be the order of the day, if a venue is to be rent for less hours, I mean totally different from the conventional wedding events
I think she wants to use lesser resources and still have a feel of the typical wedding, hence, her reason for including the reception. Considering the number of persons she said would be in attendance, a 5-hour reception would spell boredom as they would run out programmes, coupled with the fact that she would be asked to pay much for spending 5 hours at the venue.

The programmes for a 3-hour reception would be the same for a 5-hour reception, just that there would be no need to wait over one hour just because the newly weds are changing into an owambe attire. They could get an MC, make a toast, cut their cake, dance, share souvenirs and collect gifts, then feed the guests and everyone is off to their respective homes. If the couple have it in my to travel, then they could the following morning after retiring to an hotel or someone tranquil.

The most important thing is to enjoy her day.

The church wedding is not only demanding but useless and time consuming. Church wedding surely takes something out of your purse.

I don't think it's the church wedding itself that takes 'something' out of the purse, time consuming _ yes, that should be 'cos of marital classes.

People reserve the right to go home after being joined together in church, I have seen people do it.

The reception is where the main money goes down, which wasn't imposed on the couple by the church. Most pastors don't even come there.

We are thinking of going for a court marriage (registry). Please tell me the advantages and disadvantages from the male and female point of view.
Also, can I achieve these things listed below with a court wedding?

# I don't like too much crowd and noise which are common with owanbe's

# Can a little reception be allowed to hold in the court premises without prohibition?

# low Kew wedding in which after the ceremony, everyone goes back to their respective homes

# At most 15 or less number of guests. I don't want too much crowd and paparazzi

# A budget of 150k probably for snacks, cake, food and drinks.

# Time : I don't think it should take more than 5 hours and all will be over.

I brought this to the family section as I believe there are more mature minds here compared to the romance section.
Lalasticlala and farano can help move to front page so that perspectives can be broadened.

You are a reasonable lady...if many ladies are like you I believe we will have less overage single ladies.

Kudos...at least you can do a bigger ceremony latter if you so desire.

Am just gonna highlight two things OP said:
1. My niece had her marriage registered in June this year, at a registry located at New Road, before Ajah bustop. In total, bride and groom, 7 people from grooms family, 5 people from bride's family, that's a total of 14 people. They signed d marriage cert, grooms sister and brides uncle signed as witnesses, in 15 mins we were done. Came downstairs, took photographs and right there in d compound, shared d food we brought with us. We did all this in d space of 45 mins and we left.
2. 150k is even far far too much to spend for 20 people. Lemme do a quick breakdown,
Meatpie/chickenpie at 300 each for 20 people = 6000
Can malt at 150 each, cos of recession o = 3000
Bottle water at 50 naira each =1000
2 dozens of souvenir at 1200/dozen (optional) =2400
Fancy bag to pack the snacks = 1600 for 2 dozens or even less
Photographs =10-15k,(thats if u want a small photo book)
Miscellaneous =5000
U d b required to pay between 10 and 25k before d registry
Total =59000 ~ 60k.(cud b less)
If u r cutting cost, u don't need a reception, after u guys v been joined at d registry, just give each person who came with u one pack, and c'est fini.

ALTERNATIVELY
If u wanna serve rice, just replace d meat pie with rice and budget 1k per pack which d give 20k for 20 people, u d just have a total of 80k, which still leaves u with 70k as change.
If my to be husband wants us to make noise, I go help am make noise well, and we go spend better money. If he wants us to have it low key. I go help am manage d cash well. And everyone Wud still b happy. Who church wedding with all d entourage epp sef undecided.

Well, court marriage favours the lady more than the man. I'd say it's wise as a lady to take this route, after the traditional though.

Being recognized by law as man and wife means a possible case of misbehaving in the nearest future would be minimal, compared to one that is not backed up by law. Disadvantages? Not really. All it requires is just witnesses and not necessarily parents.

Yes. To achieve this, it would be wiser to fix the date on a weekday, preferably Tuesday or Thursday. Friday is closer to Saturday, which means you could have people who would disappear from their workplaces to attend, even without being invited.

Not sure about this. Remember it's a court premises. However, I'd advise you look for a place around the registry for your reception. You'll get places around there, I'm sure.

Yes, and all the more reason to stick with a weekday. Thursday is even far sef. Just stick with Tuesday or Wednesday and you'd be good.

Well, that might be quite difficult save you consider the kind of snacks and drinks. For the conventional 'small chops' you might be spending unnecessarily in that area. However, if your budget is targeted at less than 20 persons, then I'd recommend you contract people that are closer to you as they would offer you something valuable for a lesser amount.

Five hours is TOO MUCH for someone who doesn't want crowd. Most standard receptions don't even stay up to that. Also, put into consideration that most venues rent per hour, particularly in Lagos. So the longer you stay, the more you'd be spending. For me, I'd say 3 hours is enough.
How does court marriage Favour women the most?

Number 2 is false ,you need witnesses and not parents.

The witnesses must be your blood relation, one witness for the wife and one witness for the husband

That's not necessarily true, a female friend who is in an abusive marriage wanted divorce but she was told at the registry that unless there's evidence of life-threatening injuries, court won't Grant her request. Now she ever regretting going for court marriage in the first place

You know, I wasn't looking at it from the aspect of abuse. Most Nigerian men are polygamous in nature. The statutory marriage is feared by most of these men who believe they could get another woman in the nearest future, particularly when they know they are getting married to a woman who understands the law.

About your friend, well, I'm not a lawyer but I understand that abuse vary in marriage. Physical, verbal, emotional and psychological among a host of others. The court might have turned her down because she approached it looking all too 'good' and sharp. All she needs to do is to collect some evidences, alongside witnesses and she's good. Asking for a life-threatening injury is too much from the court.

Perhaps she could try a customary court. The husband might be summoned to give his own side of the story. I'd want to believe she was turned down because her story doesn't add up.

This is a bit sad. I wonder the kind of lawyer you are, really. The statutory wedding comes second to tradition. Money or not, it is in the place of a man to fulfill the obligations of tradition as required by a woman's family. Failure to do this would mean he 'stole' the woman and could be in trouble when the time comes.

Church wedding does take a whole lot and the funniest thing is that it is totally unnecessary. Most churches and couples are forced to redecorate the church to their theme colours while the church would make certain requirements cum requests that are also stressful. Buying gifts just o appreciate the pastor, pack the choir's food, as well as ministers, print church programmes, church photography, etc are just some of the little ways the church drains one's purse.

Reception is where you entertain your guests and appreciate them. The church wedding is inconsequential just as the certificates issued, but most people don't see this as the trend and competition for church weddings increase with each passing day.

Ideally, your traditional wedding first, then a registry to formalize the whole thing before the law, entertain your guests and go for your honeymoon if the money is there. You could choose to go for your Thanksgiving or church blessing afterwards. I keep telling people that there was no teaching of church wedding in the Scriptures but we act it out like our lives depend on it.

And yes, most pastors don't attend receptions because they have been heavily settled immediately after the joining in church.

People should say what they know and stop musleading or discouraging others.
So long as you are 18years and above, no parental consent is required. All that's required is two witnesses, one for yourself and one for your wife to be whom can be anybody including your friend. And as many other witnesses who will not sign as your budget can carry. Two passports each of you are required to publish your intention to be married, after 21 days and noone come around to give reason why both of you should not be married as husband and wife which few of the ground it can affect the union is if one party is still legally married as of the time of the of contracting the new one or having an undisclosed health challenge which the Petitioner thinks might affect the other party etc

The price is for Court Registry Marriage is between 10-30k depending on the Court Registry. As for your 20 guests, if you take them to a fast food joint for reception after the brief marital vow where a plate of food is #2500, 50k will take care of that. It must be on a working day Monday - Friday. Saturday and Sunday are out of it.

Legally both party are protected equally, but upon separation or divorce, property are to be shared according to each others contributions to itself emergence. Even when one party did not, a consideration is given to him/her for providing the peaceful atmosphere or psychology for its emergence. This is only applicable if one party appeal for them. Some might say they are not interested in most cases depending on what leads to the divorce. And the ground for divorce include - adultery, threat to life, undisclosed serious health challenge etc which are also probable ground for divorce in a church wedding.

Most Church issued Married Certificate is not acceptable in most Embassies unlike Registry Certificate that's acceptable everywhere.

The choice is yours. The most important thing is to study your wife character and attitude well and make sure she is a good person. If your wife is the type whose only interest is your property church wedding /traditional wedding might be a better option.
how many types of marriage do we have?
