The Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay their outstanding salaries.

The group told journalists in Ibadan on Friday that it would proceed on indefinite strike from January 3, 2017, if the outstanding salaries were not paid.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the group consisted of four professional associations, among whom are the National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

Others are Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) and the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI).

Olusegun Sotiloye, the Chairman, National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), UCH Chapter, told journalists that the last time they collected salary was in September.

Mr. Sotiloye, who addressed the news conference on the issue, stated that the seven-day ultimatum commenced from Friday, December 23, and ends on Friday, December 30.

He said that it was sad that health workers, who care for the sick, make decisions that could result in life and death, were subjected to such unimaginable hardship.
“Some of our members now trek to work to fulfil their professional, ethical and moral obligations.

“Those who can borrow have borrowed many times and their lenders have grown tired of them and are no longer lending them money,” he said.

Mr. Sotiloye said that their members are dejected, disenfranchised and their morale at the lowest ebb.
“We must let you know that this has become a recurring decimal as we had the same problem in 2014 and 2015 as the November and December salaries of the two years were not paid until January of the following year.
“This has been due to inadequate budgetary provision by the federal government as they arbitrarily slash the submitted personnel budget supplied by the hospital management.

“It is against this back ground that we are giving the federal government a seven-day ultimatum to pay all our outstanding salaries from today, Dec. 23 to Dec. 30.
“And if by then we are yet to receive the salaries, we will proceed on an indefinite strike by Tuesday, January 3, 2017,” he threatened.

He urged those in charge of personnel budget to do everything that was needful in making sure that adequate provision was made to cover the incoming year.

Besides, Mr. Sotiloye appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to help pressure the federal government to quickly settle their outstanding salaries.

Whenever I see stories like this my heart wrenches, IF ONLY WE KNOW HOW SENSITIVE THE JOB IS, how come they don't owe the military salary or the Governors, in America for example A May 2014 survey released by the Medical Group Management Association found that internal medicine doctors like myself have a starting median annual salary of $190,000, while those of specialists like radiologists or anesthesiologists approach $300,000.
Our senators pockets #30million monthly doing nothing, while those in charge or involved in saving human life are underpayed and still owed. Nigeria as a country has no or misplaced priorities, FOR A WISE LEADER THE WELFARE AND SECURITY OF HER CITIZEN SHOULD BE HER TOPMOST PRIORITY, BUT HERE IN AFRICAN OR NIGERIA THE REVERSE IS THE CASE, KEEP PRAYING AND DON'T GIVE UP ON NIGERIA.

This has nothing to do with change. It's been there since 2014 according to the report.
In fact over here it's been like that since 2013. No December salary November salary will be paid in January and December salary might come in June /july.
The whole ministry of health needs to be changed

Don't compare one of the most developed nations, which has struggled, sacrificed, endured and persevere to Nigeria, full of thieves and religio-sociocultural nonsense who was handed it's name and way of life by colonial masters

I have said it severally, the ministers of health and finance are very incompetent! First they slash personnel votes of institutions arbitrarily, then they know that by October the monies to pay workers will be exhausted but do nothing until November when they start scrambling to put a supplementary budget that will be out in January. See the idiots running this country

Not actually comparing, we can emulate them, at least start small and be consistent.

Good post and I agree with you. But...

1. 190000 USD is N59.933,316 (60 million naira approximately, using official rate)..

2.That means an internist in America earns N60-90 million naira per annum. Or N5million naira every month.

3. UCH Ibadan allocation for 2015 :N 9,593,590,422(9 billion naria)

4.Assuming UCH has ten internists (I mean consultants with FWACP/MCP/RCP)...salary bill per annum- 900 million naira (I am not using official rate).= one tenth of the hospital budget gone for the salary of ten doctors. ( And UCH has more than 10 consultant physicians, I am sure).

5.Therefore....Nigeria cannot afford the salaries that you want them to pay doctors.

6.Keep in mind that the USA example you cite.....a large chunk of their salaries goes for taxes, paying off college bills (and in the US....that means both undergrad and medical school....medical school is postgraduate in the US) , and other bills.

7. UCH allocation(2015): 9.6bn naira = $30, 433,824 (30 million dollars ). Research budget for Mass General Hospital., Boston (five years ago): 750Million dollars....and that is for research.

8.We could pay high salaries in Nigeria...but that means privatizing all our hospitals, and charging hospital fees as high as $50,000 or N15,773,250 (16 million naira ) for common cesarean section. And we do not earn enough money from oil by the way.
