- Nigeria is set to establish an Aviation University to focus on research

- The minister of aviation said the country will join countries producing aircraft

Nigeria is targeting the opportunity to join the list of countries producing air crafts as the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is set to establish an Aviation University.

The Nation reports that Hadi Sirika who is the minister of aviation confirmed this plan when he toured the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria, Kaduna State on Saturday, January 7th.

He said: “The aviation university will be different from NCAT; the university will be fully into research and development and production of higher level management manpower need of the industry.

“The university will go into deep research, with the hope that in the near future, we will be able to manufacture aircraft components, until when we are able to produce the aircraft itself.

“Since the technology is available around the world, is no longer a hindrance, it is our own ability and capability to pursue it.”

The minister of aviation noted that Brazil and India have joined aircraft producing countries and that Nigeria can do same too.

He said: “If such countries could do it, why not Nigeria’’.

“The technology is known, we are not reinventing it; we just put our act together in doing it. So, the university will cater for that, while NCAT will continue to provide the services in the institute.”

Sirika said the decentralisation of NCAT by the previous administration would make it difficult for the college to do what it was established to do.

He said: “Remember, it was the UNDP that partnered with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and Nigerian government to produce this institution.

“And it is one of its kind, so why are going to reduce its capacity and capability?. Our own task is to improve, enhance and upgrade the capacity and ability of the college to do more.

“But if somebody feels that he has funds to go and establish a facility somewhere to do some kind of training, of course, we will support him.”

Capt. Samuel Caulcrick who is the rector of the college identified funding and obsolete facilities as some of the bane to the development of the institution.

Nice and welcome. As a county we need to invest more in Science and Tech, and Education/Research. But the little we have discovered, what have we done with it.

What have we done with all the Research institutes before now? How have they benefited the common Nigerian? In Nigeria we have companies that can produce APCs for the Police and the Army. If we wanted, we could fabricate guns and even design our own specialized Rifles and Machine Guns. We would rather import an inflate contracts and prices.

How have we been able to engineer products and services that will satisfy the Nigerian and West African Market to start with? Do we have good comparative advantage?

Anyway, time covers but also establishes many things. Let us not complain much.

Wrong direction

The government should rather challenge private citizens , organizations, universities, companies, etc to develop an indigenous aeroplane with an agreement to finance through public private partnership the mass production of their innovations once it meets international standard

Government job is not to sponsor research with its personal money but to recognize & reward research works and connect them to public private investments

Government sponsored research works end up in private pockets unlike private research works.

This approach by government is a very wrong approach

Government shouldn't invest public funds into Research and Development = A study done by US government in the early 1900s

Government should rather partner with the private sector to commercialize and industrialize any indigenous technology that is as good as any international similar technology and grant those industries tax incentives and preferential treatment over foreign products.

Innoson car manufacturing plant should be tax exempted or pay half its normal tax in order to help it produce cheaper cars compare to imported cars

This is just another gimmick of the fulanis to build another major federal institution in the north. We are yet to digest why another College of Petroleum studies should be built in Kaduna when the country already has a Petroleum Training Institute and a Federal University of Petroleum Resources both in Delta state and now this celebration of bigotry from the cow-headed buhari! Why are fulanis like this? And to think that they are not even siting any of these projects in the enclaves of their afonja slaves is also something that terrifies me about these cows.

Just like the Martine schools made Nigeria a ship building country right? This is good step but doesn't address other structural issues in manufacturing process. The obvious being power supply.

Nigerian Navy College of Engineering established 1982

Maritime Academy of Nigeria established 1979.

This announcement is another example of the stupidity and ignorance that afflicts most of Nigeria's political class. It is nonsense to imagine that all there is to creating an aviation industry is announcing the creation of yet another "university", even as the many preexisting universities have undergone decades of under-investment. Where are the computer science facilities for the students in the universities Nigeria already has? Where are the physics and chemistry laboratories? Where are the wind-tunnels and CAD software packages for the engineers? Nigeria has too many bearers of worthless degrees as it is, without adding to the pile with the products of one more "university in name only".

Anyone who has studied the aviation industry will realize that it has massive capital requirements and benefits tremendously from economies of scale, which is why the industry has consolidated down to just Boeing and Airbus, from whom the rest of the world buy their own jets; not even the Chinese and the Japanese can compete in this field on a commercial basis. It would therefore make no sense for Nigerians to attempt getting into the business even if the country had working transport infrastructure and cheap, reliable power.

The very idea that some politician or bureaucrat can simply pick an industry to turn into a winner - let alone the low-IQ ignoramuses that constitute Nigeria's political ignoramuses - is absolutely laughable. These are people who can't even keep the roads and railways functioning properly, and have managed to ruin the flourishing agriculture they inherited at independence, yet they imagine they have what it takes to create a flourishing aviation industry? I don't understand how any of you can take their nonsense seriously!

First of all, Nigeria cannot produce the wheels or tires of an aircraft talkless its engines.

Nigeria MAY assemble some easy parts of it with fake bolts and others to save costs.

Nigeria can only be on the path of greatness if the government of the day finally fixes the power and steel sectors because these are the two main areas where industrialisation of any country begins.

So any government policies that doesn't include these two areas will mean that they re just joking and on a Merry go round.....
