... What happened to our historical policy of non alignment? This present administration will destroy Nigeria in the international arena. The government should be very cautious in playing international politics. Don't expose Nigeria and Nigerians at all fronts by creating a collision course with other interest groups or world powers. A word is a enough.

Are we a colony of the U.S? Anything we do should be in our long term interest. As far as i am concerned, saying nothing and watching things play out is the best route.

Learn Bro.

Not a matter of colony. It is a diplomatic relations thing.

We did not severe relationship because America did.

We did because of our interest and protection that of China as a partner.

I only mentioned America so you know that the Free state did the same.

Pls,understand.I said stalling on the issue is in our best interest, not pandering to the US or China ,or Taiwan for that matter. In a major fight you congratulate the winner and commiserate with the loser. You don't take sides (as a neutral) in something that is of no concern to you, when you don't know the winner before-hand.

ok i get u.

but like i said it is about interest.

if you measure Taiwan and nothing will come, i cant risk 40Billion Dollar investment from china because i want to be neutral.

If China is of no importance and interest, then we can sit on the fence.

It is possible it is part of the condition for China to release the money is that you will not help my enemy by recognizing them.

Your comparism of Taiwan (actually Chinese Taipei) with Western Sahara (future Saharawi Republic) and Palestine (future Arab Republic of Palestine) is erroneous.

Taiwan is an integral part of China attempting to break away from the main body and for this the UN has not recognised it for decades. While Palestine and Western Sahara are previously autonomous territories invaded and conquered by outsiders (i.e. Israelis and Morrocans respectively).

I feel Donald Trump's odd and needless top level interactions with the Taiwanese leader has alarmed and prompted China to muscle her trading partners to dump Taiwan. In this case, Trump is gonna be doing Taiwan more harm than good.

As for Nigeria, there are no emotions in diplomatic relations. It is in Nigeria's strategic interest to play China over Taiwan for obvious economic and global power balance reasons.

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan oobjected on Thursday to a Nigerian request to the island to relocate its representative office in the African country, a request Taiwan sees as more pressure by China to isolate it.

Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province, ineligible for state-to-state relations, and to be taken back by force if necessary, especially if it makes moves toward independence.

Taiwan has no diplomatic ties with Nigeria, but has an office for handling business affairs in Abuja.

But Taiwan's foreign ministry said Nigeria has asked Taipei to move its office from Abuja to its former capital, Lagos.

Taiwan called on Nigeria to consider the issue as both sides have an understanding based on reciprocity, under which Nigeria runs a trade office in Taiwan's capital, Taipei.

"The foreign ministry urges Nigeria to leave room for discussion," Taiwan's ministry said in a statement, referring to the request to move the trade office.

"The foreign ministry seriously objects and condemns the unreasonable actions by the Nigerian government," it said.

Nigerian officials met their Chinese counterparts in Abuja on Wednesday and pledged to stick to Beijing's "one China" policy, that Taiwan is a part of China, media reported.

Taiwan has 21 formal allies, only two in Africa. Last month, former African ally Sao Tome switched its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.

In countries with which Taiwan has no formal diplomatic relations it often sets up trade and commerce offices, in capitals and major cities.

While economic ties between the mainland and Taiwan have grown considerably in recent years, their relations have worsened since Tsai Ing-wen, who heads a pro-independence party, was elected president of the island last year.

The question is.....What is Taiwan offering us? If Beinjing is offering 40 billion dollar, Taiwan should offer us 50 billion dollar or more, if they cant, let them pack their loads and use d next available flight out of Nigeria....

Trump is Pro-Taiwan and Anti-China. Explicitly de-recognizing Taiwan will definitely put us on a collusion path with Trump. Both of us know what US govt is capable of doing. Just a call to the Hague, the country will tilt towards instability.

The country is facing about 8 charges currently at that court, should Trump show interest in them. Your ranting online wouldn't save us.

Definitely Buhari did that for the good of the Nation, but should have exercised a little restrain until we see the direction of Trump's foreign policy with China.

Funny u.....did u even understand what is going on?

This is how international politics is played. Let me break it down for you. We have 2 Chinese govts. There is one in Beijing and the other is in Taiwan. Apparently the most recognized one is the one in Beijing. But because of the neutral posture of Nigeria to most international conflicts, we tends to recognized the two. Right now, Nigeria is experiencing one of her worst economic era in recent times. We need all the help we can get. The Beijing government is proposing to pump a whopping 40 billion dollar into our economy (not even the loan issue now) on just one condition, we cut ties with the Taiwan government. Tell me what a reasonable government would have done in that position.

This is a matter of weighing in on the two options and choosing the best for our country. And am sure is not as simple as portrayed by the media. There must have a lot of backchanelling negotiations before this decision was taken.

Please use the google for more explanations.......

I don't know what some of u guys really want. In the 21st century, diplomacy is all about strategic interest. That is what is in d best interest of Nigeria period.
Someone is talking about none align movement, where were u when GEJ voted against the none align wish of a Palestinian state and in the end getting nothing for Nigeria apart from handshake from Nathanyahu?
Now u have a president who clearly took decision in the best interest of Nigeria in the end getting several deals one of which is a modern rail line running from Calabar, passing through your village all through to portharcourt, yet u are saying negative things about the man. Weep for your generation.

At the UN, all the none align nations including Nigeria agreed to vote for palestine just for President Goodluck Jonathan at the 11th hour received a phone call from Prime minister Nathanyahu who pressured GEJ to change nigerias vote to NO. This is really ridiculous. If you believe a leader that stood against US backed EU EPA package will be pressured by Isreal, then you will believe anything.

Why do u think Obama who openly supported Jonathan 2011 election bid, later fell out with the man.

Jonathan fell out with Obama after rejecting this EPA just like Analysts predicted.

If you think Jonathan voted NO cause of Benji, then you are on a long thing. Pro-Isreal is part of Jonathan FP and will vote NO, over and over again.

Since 2010 Jonathan had been running a strong Pro-Isreal FP, before that vote had been in Isreal twice, the strengthen bi-lateral relations led to the signing of an agreement to allow direct flight bw Abuja and Tel Aviv, in 2011 after the UN building bombing Isreali security were deployed to manage security at the State house temporarily.

We voted against Isreal not as a result of any fvcking pressure, but rather a friendly relationship with them. Next time you want to lie, gather small kids and the zombies.

Jonathan is an Ijaw man. No fvcking leading dictates to him.
