Uncomfortable as it may be for a parent to admit, some children do suffer from panic disorders. This is not the same as a child who may be nervous about a new experience or worried about an upcoming examination. This is usual and nothing to worry about, it is when the fears develop into panic or anxiety disorder.

Children can develop fearful feelings about sertain people, places, objects or situation. If this fear persists for at six months or more and affects their day to day life, the child is said to have a phobia. Symptoms of a phobic response may include being frozen to the spot with terror, becoming clingy, throwing tantrums or suffering from stomach aches.

It may be that a child is overly sensitive to situations and events and may strive for perfection. This leads to them worrying excessively about everyday things and they become extremely harsh on themselves. They could also need constant reassurances and approval from others.

As parents, we strive to protect our children and prevent anything negative from impacting on their lives, unfortunately it is not always possible. Children can suffer from certain types of anxiety disorders that are also identified in adults.

Anxiety disorders in children can display themselves as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD), which results in compulsive behavior and can be extremely distressing for both child and parents. The constant repetition oc certain routines or behavior, helps to relieve the stress of a situation and although it is most common in children around ten years old, it has been identified in children as young as two.

As is the case with an adult, it is imperative that professional advice should be taught for any child displaying anxiety disorders
