If the ref feels it affected the play then he has a right to call it. That pull could have affected the timing of the jump, or the height of the jump. He impeded the player enough that, in the refs opinion, a penalty was warranted.

There was no impedance, clear or otherwise. Piq made his jump in peace. Vidic did not prevent anything from happening in there.

Piq shoulda had a free kick. Vida shoulda had a free kick 'cos of Piq's foul on him. Brown shoulda had a free kick against him. And I'm sure a lot of other free kick offences went on in the box.

what about handballs at the edge of the box,but inside the box. .  unintentional contact, but with stretched hand. Isn't it, ultimately, the ref's discretion?  I'm not saying u have to agree with the call. . .i agreed it is a harsh call. But it is well within the rules of the game and IMO a referee's competence or honesty should not be questioned over such.
