National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) have suspended all news blogs and websites bearing “jamb” as domain name suspected of defrauding Nigerians. The suspension came as a result of complaints filed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to NITDA requesting for a shutdown of all such websites in Nigeria.

A source who operates such site and does not which to be mentioned confided on FINANCIAL WATCH on the shutdown of their website after receiving a mail from their web host intimating them of the complaint.

The source further said, according to the mail that the “We got a complaint from JAMB through National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on a number of domain names that are defrauding Nigerians using different variant of their name (JAMB), your website was listed among them, and we were instructed to investigate and suspend all the domain names involved”.

“We communicated the information to the Registrars of the domain names in question and requested them to kindly also investigate and take the appropriate action”.

The warning mail further stated: “We understand that this domain names may not indulge in any fraudulent activity. However, we advice that you take down the contents of this site as requested by Nira to avoid immediate suspension of the domain name”.

“Please note that if this is not done within 12 hours of this report, we will be forced to suspend the domain”.

Further investigation by our reporter shows that all websites having “jamb” in their domain name has been shutdown as at the time of filling this report.

It has been observed by JAMB and also our investigative team that such websites are prone to spreading false news about the activities of JAMB and may also be involved in fraudulent activities and sales of fake JAMB forms.

This is a welcome development that would help a lot of people looking to the internet for information about JAMB. Reminds me of what happened in 2007 when the US government had to pull the plug on the ca.gov Web domain used by the State of California. It was found out that the servers that handled the agency's Web and domain name service had been hacked and were being used to create links to pornographic Web sites.

For anyone interested in taking down sites that you have honest reasons to believe that they defraud unsuspecting victims, there are the steps that a domain name registrar like namecheap urges people to take:

If you find out a website is fake, just follow these directions:

- Go to Domain Tools located on their site and type in the domain.

- Find out who the domain is registered with.

- Write a formal complaint in an email.

- Send it to the registrar’s abuse department. NameCheap’s abuse department can be reached at abuse(at)namecheap(dot)com. If they find the charge valid, they will suspend the domain.

Please keep the internet safe for everyone. Report fraud whenever you see it!

JAMB try. Those involved should do the needful or face the consequences. Some people will just be looking for opportunities to defraud others at every turn.

It appears good but is it in tandem with the principle guiding domain name registration?

Well that is only if it's a ccTLDs (country code Top Level Domains) .
For example:
Jamb.ng
Realjamb.com.ng
JambDaura.org.ng

They have no access to .com's

But what if the acronym of my business is JAMB?
