Chinese spring festival is fixed based on the lunar calendar. This year, the festival falls between Jan 25 - Jan 28, 2017 on the Geogerian calendar.

Jan 25 腊月二十八:题写桃符
After people have cleaned the house and started preparing food, they begin decorating their homes creating an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity on the 28th day of the 12th month in the Lunar Calendar. Decorations include spring couplets, New Year pictures, red ballons, posters of door frames bearing new year wishes and paper-cuts.

Jan 26 腊月二十九:上供请祖
On the 29th day of the 12th lunar month people visit the graves of their ancestors to honor their memory. It is said Spring Festival originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people's sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the start of a new one.

Jan 27 大年三十:除夕守岁
Chinese people are supposed to stay up the whole night on the 30th day of the 12th month in the Lunar Calendar. Families gather to eat and drink, in celebration while awaiting the new year.

Jan 28 大年初一:金鸡报晓
The first day of Chinese New Year, this year known as the "Year of the Rooster", officially begins at midnight.

It is traditional to light loud firecrackers, hang and float red ballons, make lights as dim as possible to chase off the evil monster "nian".

The most important part of the day is the family visitations. The oldest and most senior members are visited by the younger members, many who are returnees from the cities where they live and work. These visits are meant to strengthen family kinships. Senior members of the family in turn hand out red envelopes containing cash (Chinese: ya sui qian), as a form of blessing and to suppress aging and the challenges of the coming year, to junior members of the family, mostly children and teenagers.

Traditional food for the festival is dumplings called "jiaozi" in chinese, while the festive color is Bright Red.

Wish you all Nairalanders a Happy New Year. The year of the Rooster. The year of abundance!
