Her heart was pounding hard as she raced upstairs. Suddenly, she felt a grip of fear and pain as she turned the knob of the door that led to her room. She sat down at the edge of the king sized bed she sometimes shared with her husband and buried her face in her palms. She stood up and walked towards the window, her phone held firmly in her hands. The evening sun shone brightly beyond the windows, the hibiscus flowers in the garden swayed lazily. She stood there like someone in a trance, confusion clouding her thoughts.

Suddenly, the vibration of the sophisticated mobile phone she held in her hand brought her back to the moment. She checked the caller ID, it was Liz. She walked to her elegant dressing room and said a quiet ‘hello.’

“We are getting ready to leave, you know Ibadan is still some distance away.”

“No, no, no! Don’t leave now! They are cooking for you and the day is still bright. Besides, I thought you were sleeping over. I’m in the toilet, coming down now.” She pleaded with her friend. Liz is not just an old acquaintance; Liz saved her life back in the days. A wonderful friend she had hoped to meet again, though she wished the circumstances were different.

Liz sighed, “You know we can’t sleep. Tobi is eager to get home, and Dr Deji left so many personal stuff to bring me to Lagos.”

Mrs Yemi Williams rushed downstairs and met her visitors set to leave. She gave Tobi and Liz a warm hug and waved at Dr Deji who stood a distance away from them. She only prayed Ella’s description of her target doesn’t match this wonderful woman. “I’ll come and pay you a real visit in Ibadan next week, I promise.”

“I will be expecting you.” Liz said in an emotion laden voice, stimulated by her friend’s emotional hug. “Give my warm regards to Dr Williams.”

“Em, I think we should leave now. This sun is just a facade, once it sets in a few minutes, the whole place will be dark.” Deji said impatiently, eager to leave the Williams luxurious home.

Yemi Williams held out her hands to Tobi and handed the content to him. It was a wad of cash. “My dear, please use this to get yourself something, anything. I would have loved to go shopping with you, but no time.”

Liz rushed forward and held Yemi William’s wrist before Tobi could take the cash. “Please, you have been kind enough; he can’t take the money, please.”

Yemi Williams smiled and held her friend by the shoulder with her free hand. Facing her she said; “I can’t possibly do enough for your child. You are indeed a friend indeed and your son is my son! Please let him take it.”

Left with no choice, Liz released Yemi’s hand and she handed the money to an eager Tobi. He grabbed the money with so much excitement and held it firmly without even looking at it, though he was tempted to, but he remembered his mother’s warning to never count monetary gift in front of the giver. He rushed down to the car as if he walked on hot coal and others walked slowly after him. He knew the money would go a long way.

Dr Deji and Tobi sat in the car while Mrs Yemi Williams and Liz said their final round of farewells.

His hands slipped on the steering wheel. He blotted them on his jeans. There was something about Mrs Yemi Williams he didn’t feel comfortable with.

“Dr Deji, se ko si?” Liz asked, concerned. Deji had driven in silence for miles, very unusual and she was worried about him. “You are unusually quiet, did I do something to hurt you?”

“Aw, no. I’m just wondering why your friend suddenly felt uncomfortable and even took a toilet break immediately she saw Darasimi’s picture. Besides, we saw Darasimi coming out of the hospital today.”

“Hmmm, that wasn’t lost on me too...but Yemi is a very warm person, I’m sure you’ll like her and I will ask her about Darasimi. I’m sure she’ll tell me.”

Gently, he placed a hand on her thigh and held the wheels with the other. “Elizabeth, people change, okay? Especially people you lose contact with for some time.”

“I’m afraid so.” She answered solemnly and sighed.

“Besides, she’s Mrs Williams and Madam Ella too is a Williams...”

Liz’s smiled and stroked his thigh gently. “Don’t even go there Deji. There is no way the two Williams are related in any way. They are Mrs Williams and I’m sure they didn’t marry the same guy.”

Deji accepted defeat and smiled, holding her hands firmly to his thigh in a sensual way. He could feel the chemistry build up between them, but he knew he had to come clean to her first. Saddened by the realization of what may happen once he tells her the truth about him and Ella, he carefully placed her hands on her thigh and held the steering wheel with both hands.

“How much did Yemi give you” Liz asked with a smile, looking at Tobi through the mirror. He had grown physically, but he was still the cute boy he was before his travail, he was still her baby and she loved him even more.

“N10,000.” He said with a big smile and held it up for her to see. His astonishing vitality brightened her mood.

“So, what’s my baby buying with it?”

He pretended as if in deep thought for a few seconds, then smiled and said. “I’ll give you for safe keeping. I know you need it more than me now.”

Moved by his kind gesture, Deji nodded and said, “You can actually use it for whatever you like, I will help you give mum another one.”
“Noo, even at that, she still needs this one. A bi mummy?”

Liz smiled, overwhelmed with the love. “Ok, let’s do it this way; you buy whatever you want with 5,000 and I keep the rest.”

He stretched forth his hands and handed her the money. “Really mum, I don’t need it. I collected it because of you. I know you’ve not gone to the shop since and rats must have eaten the food there.”

“Thank you son, but Dr Deji here had earlier helped me pack the foodstuff to grandma’s house. She sells them in bits in front of the house.”

“Thank you sir.” Tobi said to Deji who responded with a nod and a big smile as they drove through Toll gate and faced Challenge area of Ibadan.

Liz checked the dashboard clock and saw 7:12pm. The drive to their house at Apete , then back to his Liberty Academy house off the new Akala express would be too much stress for Deji. “Deji, please drop us off at grandma’s house at Oke Ado, it’s too late for you to drive us home tonight.” She offered.

It was a welcome idea. Deji had phone calls to make and a few emails to reply in the comfort of his home. He had just been notified by his lawyer that he can continue his medical practice and he also won some monetary compensation. Apparently, he was not given fair hearing and the lady that set it all up had confessed to framing him up when she was caught doing it to another man. Deji hitched to share the good news with Liz, but not until he comes clean with her. She wasn’t even aware of his legal woes. Whenever he queried his continuous stay in Nigeria, he had assured her he was relocating to float a big Specialist Hospital. A dream he actually had.

“Ok, if you insist. I’ll drop you off at mama’s place and see you in the morning by God’s grace. Just don’t let excitement keep you from taking a few hours of sleep...you look exhausted already.”

Liz drew closer to him and whispered, “I promise” in his ears as he took the turn to College Crescent. The streetlights ended and the grey night enveloped them. The once tarred road is now half pot-holes, half asphalt and the car swayed to the bends with every turn. The street shops were still open and their lights illuminated the street. As they approached mama’s house, they caught a glimpse of mama and Richard’s wife chatting as the latter handed a measure of rice to a customer in a yellow and black nylon bag, while Richard sat on a bench close to them. Thankfully, it appeared PHCN had decided to give Tobi a warm welcome.

“Grandma! Aunty...” Tobi screamed before Deji could find a suitable place on the crowded street to park his car.

Chapter Twenty Eight.

Lagos.

Early the following morning, just after dawn, Yemi Williams could sleep no more. She had stayed awake most part of the night and she ached in every muscle and joint. Her husband had returned home immediately Liz and her friend drove out, she’d had no time to herself since then. She could not speak deeply with Ella on phone when her husband was within earshot. Unable to bear any further delay, she got up and took a quick shower, dressed in a black caftan and adorned her ear and neck with a blend of silver and gold costumes. She capped it all with an expensive Gucci slippers she bought in Italy recently. She knocked on her husband’s door, just across her own room, and waited for him to ask her in. They have not shared a room since they moved to their present mansion over two years ago and it was mutually satisfying for both parties.

“Come in.” She heard the gruff voice of Dr Williams behind the closed door.
She turned the knob and saw him sprawled on the bed, half naked, looking as fit and handsome as ever. No wonder the ladies flocked around him. “Good morning, Femi Williams.” She said with an air of sarcasm. She was four years older than him; he was two years younger than her immediate younger brother, a fact she has successfully kept to herself.

Dr Williams sat up on his bed, propped by two huge pillows. “Where are you going, dressed like this and this early?”

Mrs Williams sat on the edge of the bed, as far away from her husband as possible. “I have a business appointment in Ibadan.”

“Who will take care of the children? Today is their mid-term break.” He reminded her, his anger threshold wearing thin. Recently, like his friends and colleagues, he had begun to wonder how he married this woman who was poles apart from him in every way.
Sensing his anger, she stroked his stomach lightly and said, “Okay, calm down. My children are teenagers, not a couple of helpless babies. Besides, I will be back today.”

Dr Williams still visibly angry, removed her hand from his stomach and placed it on the bed beside her. “I’m getting tired of these business trips of yours, Yemi.” He said calmly.

“You understand the hospital business can no longer support our lifestyle and that I need to fend for myself too, right?”

“Yes, the hospital business can no longer sustain your lavish spending” he said, “It’s ok for me and my children...besides, as the first child of late Chief Femi Williams senior, I ... ”

“Your father’s Will says otherwise.” She cut him short. “You are not his first child, according to his Will, and it’s this first child that is entitled to 70% of his properties, for reasons best known to him and his lawyer.”

He flared up in unrestrained anger, got up from the bed in one swift move and stamped his feet on the ground violently. “Enough! Are you for me or against me? A friend or an enemy? Has the lawyer found this illegitimate child?”

She was shocked at his outburst. He never raised his voice at her until recently. “Are you not worried about losing your father’s wealth to a stranger and living like an ordinary doctor?” She asked calmly, without batting her lash. “Unless you find her and fix her before the lawyer does, all you get is this house and your small share of the hospital business.”

“You forced me to take in partners, Yemi. You messed my business up. You messed my life up.”

“You brought this upon yourself, Femi Williams.” She said. With that, she stood up and left him standing in the room. She needed the money badly herself, more than her husband. She realised she had to intensify her effort to get this mysterious benefactor off the Will.

“Good morning ma.” The house help curtseyed as she got downstairs.

“Call Mr Faj for me.” She said, without responding to the help’s greeting. She sat at the already set dining table and made some hot beverage for herself, ignoring the sandwich meant to go with it. Within minutes, Mr Faj rushed inside from the kitchen.

“Good morning ma.”

“Yes, Faj. You’ll be driving me to Ibadan with the Infiniti right now.”

“Em...ok ma...are we coming...”

“Keep quiet!” Mrs Williams cut him short in anger. “How many times have I warned you not to ask for details of my trips?”

“I’m so..sorry ma.” Mr Faj stuttered, “Oga said...”

“Are you mad? Who is the oga here? He should get a second driver.” Mrs Yemi Williams banged the tea cup on the saucer so hard it almost broke, spilling some of its content on the poor driver. “Take my bag to the car and wait for me.”

The driver sprinted to the garage and started the engine of the SUV. She joined him after a few seconds after barking orders at the gatekeeper and house help.

By 8:04am, they were at Berger, facing very light traffic. She brought out her phone and dialled Ella’s number. She picked on the second ring. “Ore, I’m on my way to Ibadan.” She told a still sleepy Ella. Then she allowed her mind to wander into the past...

Elizabeth...

The girl who had backed her and walked to Oluyoro Hospital in the night when she had a botched abortion during her days as a student midwife. For two days, she had bled in her room, too weak and too ashamed to go outside and get help. Thinking she was going to die, she had used her last strength to scribble the name of the man who put her in that condition on a piece of paper.

The only friend who had come to look for her was Elizabeth, but she was too poor to take care of her hospital bill. Even her partner in crime, Isabella was nowhere to be found. She got to know how Elizabeth had traced the man whose name she scribbled on the paper and forced him to pay her hospital bill. The doctors said Elizabeth’s timely intervention had saved her life and her uterus...

I feel Lizzy is the missing benefactor, the first child of sit Femi Williams and if that is so, I don't know if greed will allow the Doctors wife to spare Lizzy's life. I feel she may try, but fail to kill Lizzy.
