“We had a meeting with the protesters and we explained to them why we advised against the protest. A pro-government group wants to protest that same day and we don’t want a situation where there would be friction.” Which group came up with the idea of a protest first on the said date? |

The Lagos C.P. seems to have come to his senses. The Abuja C.P. should follow suit and not issue empty threats. Civil protest is constitutionally guaranteed. The courts have variously struck down the requirement for Police permit for such protests as unconstitutional and a repression of the people's right to freely express themselves. |

The courts have variously struck down the requirement for Police permit for such protests as unconstitutional and a repression of the people's right to freely express themselves. The duty of the Police during such protests is merely to provide protection for the protesters and nothing more. |
