A grandmother, Mrs. Kehinde Alabi, 37, has asked the Igando Customary Court in Alimoso Local Government Area of Lagos State, to dissolve her 19-year old marriage to her 63-year old husband, Kadiri.

The mother of five and grandmother asked the court to dissolve the marriage because she was tired and no longer in love with the old man.

The couple who reside at 3, Daleko Street, Ikotun, P.M.News gathered, has turned their house into a battleground with constant fighting.

According to Kehinde, there has been constant fighting between her and her husband. She attributed this to lack of respect for her by her estranged husband, adding that she lost interest in the marriage because her husband does not care for her and her children any more.

While testifying before the court presided over by Mr. Eko, the petitioner said she also wanted the marriage dissolved because her husband does not respect her family members.

She told the court further that the marriage produced five children—Sikirat, 17; Aishat, 16; Suliat, 13; Sherif, 12 and eight-year old Taofik.

The matter was adjourned till 10 December, 2009 to enable the husband appear in court to respond to the allegations levelled against him.

In the Igbo society, polygyny is not merely tolerated, it is encouraged and accepted, still monogamous marriages very greatly outnumber polygynous ones. Among the Igbo, a father accepts responsibility for all his wife's children throughout his life. This makes the choice of a wife and the recognition of marriage an important matter for the community.

The normal age is 25-28 for the man and from 14 to 18 for the girl. In some parts of Igbo land, child-marriage (ldo-nkwu nwanyi, igudo-nwanyi) literally, bringing bride wine, staking bride claim, was practised. "Rich parents", says Basden, "often select a wife (or wives) for a son, while he is still a boy, he probably having no knowledge of the transaction

Oh cmon do the math. The 1st kid is 17 n she is 37 means she gave birth at 20 not 12. And at 17 the kid is perfectly able to father/birth a child so go figure.

Why is everyone saying she was 12 wen she got married. For heavens sake this is simple maths now. Haba!

37 - 17 = 20

20 not 12!

She is 37 married for 19 years means she got married at age 37-19= 18

Ist child is 17 means she had her ist child at age 37-17 = 20

So the problem is not with the grandmother. but the daughter who is already with a child at age 17. all the same not too early cos I know girls in the northern part of Nigeria get married as early as 13.

How did igbo marriage history enter this topic?. Do you know people here will start wondering how sane you are with your out of place postings. A few days ago, igbo women marry late courtesy of nairaland; today they marry at 14 according to tpia and her afrikaworld. Which one should we believe?
