Groundnut oil is not because of any high cost in transportation, like wise so many other food item like yam, Garri, red oil et all. Apc is Badluck, that is what they need to address.

BlackSeptember:
This is the most stupid statement from this government.

Why can't they face it that the rise in foodstuffs is as a result of inflation today.

Another reason is the exchange rate because those foodstuff sellers will need to buy things they don't produce and also meet their other pressing needs like clothes, new house, cars, farm machines etc
Ogbeni...yu ain't making sense at all na...make ur points obvious undecided
Starting from d transportation sector is a good move and a welkom development, another thing they need to work on is d security sector dat demands settlements from every trailers...then other things follow

How many states have railway infrastructures? How long does it take to fix or construct one? This should be a long term goal and not short. Why not tackle the diesel problem now, even it means introducing more subsidy on it and making sure it's available. What about fixing the roads on which these trucks ply? what about building crop and food storage systems in cities? what about govt buying farm produce from farmers and then storing them in these storage systems(silos), thereby encouraging them to produce more?
Re: Nigerian Government Adopts Measures To Reduce Food Prices by Redhot111(m): 4:03pm On Feb 08, 2017

my dear, u have succeeded in communicating nothing to me and possibly other fellow naira landers (fnl) with your piece. to cap it up, u go on to insult elders via this forum @dumb ass.
you should have just enumerated other causes of high food cost apart from your perceived myopic view of the committee.
i think forex has a hand because some of the hybrids and fertilizers are imported. how sure are we that we are producing enough? a fnl suggested we could make use of prisoners on our vast arable lands to which i agree.
Our storage of perishables is still pedestrian and this makes foodstuffs to overflood the market at time A, forcing prices down temporarily, only to surge prices high when most perish and few good ones are left.
need more plausible reasons for the high cost of food stuffs.

I am at the verge of giving up. This government is simply clueless. How did we go from having World Bank guru in Iweala and AfDB MD Adesina to these ones?

Don't they know that it is simple economics; rising food prices is merely due to inflation rate? If the inflation rate goes up, essential commodities, cost of living, basically everything goes up?

And you can not pretend to tackle one of the outcomes on its own without addressing the reason why the inflation rate is hovering around the 20% mark- a figure which I believe is watered down as essential commodities have gone up by, in some cases, 300%!

I know the present Minister of Agriculture is a 1950/1960's graduate of French, but this is simple economics. Do they want to dance around pretending to work, while the people suffer more?

Audu no get anything inside him head, he is just talking for talking sake, there are a myraid of factors that are causing high Cost of food, closing borders and Nigeria is unable to produce enough, there is surplus in one place and a dearth in another, the forex game, lack of storage facilities, and the fact that our markets operates like a monopoly, if they decide rice is 1,000, everyone else sells for 1,000 0r 1,200.there is no competition..see am not an agriculturist and i make more sense, when they say elect people who are intellectuals Nigerians will be electing because of tribe and religion.

Why not simply reduce d landing cost of diesel and all other port charges!
These pple can really exasperate one. What kind of people do d thinking for this govt self.
What of gas and kerosene? No strategic plan to bring down their costs.
What of other household and non household items that av increased too.
Even if cost of food items were to come down at d wholesale point,d retailer has to increase prices so as to meet up with his/her cost of buying other essentials.
Reduce port charges,liberalize/put in place measures to increase dollar inflow, then u av started.Otherwise, even if u goods free of charge,it wont drastically bring them prices!

It is clear that the tax for doesn't know the problem. instead of government talking about how to increase productivity,in all aspects. in a situation where only few state engaged in farming what do you think will happen, government should buy tractors and graze the reserve farm land in every state. if they can do a better mentoring. at the end the should supply the markets with governments price in large quantity. in one week private owners Will ran out of market. when all the government schools where properly build and equipt in some state especially secondary and primary school. did private schools not ran out of market?

Which kind yeye measures, open border for rice to enter the country and see how prices would drop...
Re: Nigerian Government Adopts Measures To Reduce Food Prices by menwongo(m): 4:45pm On Feb 08, 2017
grandstar:
The primary reason why food prices are high is due to the collapse of the naira from around 200.to a $ in 2015 to 490 today. Note that also the price of diesel is set internationally.

Also, protectionist policies such as high import duties on rice and increased duties on wheat have only worsened matters.

Imported food would have helped moderate the price of local ones but that's not the case.

Also there has been massive demand for food from neighbouring francophone countries who now find our food very cheap as their currency has increased in value by at least a 100% against the naira over the last two years.

You just said my mind. Those bleedin ass need to employ educated personality for policy improvement in this bleeding country.
Re: Nigerian Government Adopts Measures To Reduce Food Prices by Nobody: 4:46pm On Feb 08, 2017
another reasons for high food prices is because farmers in fertile areas are no longer going to farms because of the Fulani Herdsmen, who use their lands for grazing and displace citizens and there is the issue of displaced citizens of the Gwoza Hills ,etc that are now IDP thanks to Shekau
Re: Nigerian Government Adopts Measures To Reduce Food Prices by Icon79(m): 4:48pm On Feb 08, 2017
The problem with high cost of food stuffs in Nigeria can be solved simply by producing more food. Improving the distribution network can be a good idea but we still need to have the food stables in abundance, if you want to reduce the cost.

As long as there's food scarcity, transporting it by train or plane isn't gonna make much difference.
