Are they just realizing this?

This is the reason why citizens should speak up during oppresion, as we can see that this idea would not have materialized if people did not complain.

This is the major difference between Africa and the developed world, over here we have reactionary leaders that only function in times of desperation rather than the visionary leadership of the West which thinks about the future while also catering for the present.

What kind of ignorance is all this on Nairaland
Nigeria's high inflation was PREDICTED accurately from November, last year. They also said it will hit food prices most . The Mtef documents, 2017 budget document, UBA 2017 forecasts, GTB forecasts, IMF, ..even interviews on Channels TV by Rewane and other people familiar with our economy late last year all said the same thing .
Where are people keeping their brains in Nigeria?
Instead of people thinking, reading and learning they just stay on social media and post RUBBISH.
Prepare for more.

As the economy improves and gets reflated, there will be sporadic inflationary spikes that will go and come.
If you want to know more, READ.
Minimum wage will also go up late this year or early 2018, prepare for further short term inflation.
Economics is a science , there is no emotion in it.

This is the most stupid statement from this government.

Why can't they face it that the rise in foodstuffs is as a result of inflation today.

Another reason is the exchange rate because those foodstuff sellers will need to buy things they don't produce and also meet their other pressing needs like clothes, new house, cars, farm machines etc
Some people just prefer to throw insults even before they think. At the end of the day, after labelling the statement as stupid, you still return to say 'inflation' is the cause of the rise in food prices. So what is inflation? .. Have you suddenly forgotten that the cost of fuel for transportation is the single most powerful influencer of inflation in Nigeria?...

High exchange rate = High fuel cost = high transport cost = high cost of doing business = higher cost of final product/services = inflation

You claim 'inflation' is the cause of rising food prices but you also think the person who fingers cost of fuel/transportation (the strongest drivers of inflation in Nigeria) is making a 'most stupid statement'?

Na wa oh!

The plan to use rail to transport food is a very welcome idea as it will reduce the final cost of food at the market.
However, issues concerning the preservation of foodstuff at the hands of farmers need to be looked into also, as its claimed that over 30% of such food crops are lost to spoilage and lack of proper preservation.

Economics is a science , there is no emotion in it.

It was predicted for the government to find a solution to it both short and long term and not to sit down and act only when citizens protest.
If the government implemented this months ago, the impact of inflation will be felt less by the citizens.

You are the one being emotional and blinded by the fact that we are being ruled by visionless leaders.

The primary reason why food prices are high is due to the collapse of the naira from around 200.to a $ in 2015 to 490 today. Note that also the price of diesel is set internationally.

Also, protectionist policies such as high import duties on rice and increased duties on wheat have only worsened matters.

Imported food would have helped moderate the price of local ones but that's not the case.

Also there has been massive demand for food from neighbouring francophone countries who now find our food very cheap as their currency has increased in value by at least a 100% against the naira over the last two years.
Spot on. It's persons like u that should head such a c'ttee. Not doz yam heads who are so obsessed with sychophancy and mediocrity. Trucks ke! So it wasn't trucks that had been used to transport such goods all these years dat the prices of goods wr stable, at least to some extent? I said it, wen dis c'ttee was set up, that it wld beta if it wr made up of farmers, rather dan frog-brained charlatans angry

This is only measure for their remaining 2 years to be in office. The fundamental issue have never been talked upon. Nigeria always playing politics rather than solving problem. Please to our empty head leaders the entire system need overhauling period before you can achieve anything meaningful.
