British, German Journalists Attacked In Cape Town

British and German journalists, who were in Cape Town for the World Cup 2010 draw on Friday,
were forced into a terrifying ordeal after criminals stole equipment and cash from them at knife point, according to La Repubblica.

The report claims the incident happened after the draw on Friday evening.
A group of journalists said to be from the BBC had the window in the car they were traveling in
smashed by thieves who stole video cameras and other expensive equipment.

In a separate incident, two German journalists were forced to hand over cash and other valuables at knife point in the centre of Cape Town.

On Friday morning, reports claimed a bomb scare prior to the draw caused concern among those present for the draw ceremony.

While the draw was carried out problem-free, these latest incidents are likely to raise concern regarding security ahead of the tournament.

South Africa needs to recruit a record number of police for the event. Why are they dithering?

I have strongly advocated that the security of lives and properties be given priority, rather than some sentimental and misplaced desire to encourage the African continent. If the security situation in South Africa does not improve by february, they should be stripped
