This has nothing to do with Religion..... any religion!

What he did was wrong!
Even he (The Pastor) agreed that he had over done it
He even went further to confess that he had done it before............ these are not actions of someone who is unrepentant or irredeemable!

What he is contending with is UNCONTROLLED TEMPERAMENT!
A lot of parents are also guilty of these, not because they dont love their children but because they lack "self control" and dont know when to STOP, once they get into the "grove" of these fits of temperament!

Now, being a "family matter", we should ask ourselves: Does JAILING him add any benefit to the family, at this point?
The answer is obviously NO! Not in the interest of the wife nor the children or even that of society.

The "common-sense" approach using "ADR methods" is to first punish him in a way that he will always remember without destabilising the family structure (tell him to do community service...sweet streets, clear gutters, do "School Warden" school children crossing, e.t.c).

After the 'punishment', let him write an under-taken not to "over-flog" his children again.

Then send him to "Professionals" who can HELP HIM tame his anger and let him complete a full course on "Anger Management".
The whole idea should be how to help him become a better Dad who can pass instructions to his children without using cane at all or over-doing it.
He needs Anger-management classes.

Generally, we parents must realise that 'All children dont learn at the same rate'.
We were once children ourselves and l can bet that not all of us attain 1st position in class, from day 1.... so why do we then put too much pressure on our kids, just for lagging behind?
Instead of flogging them, a good parent must vow to keep teaching his child (by repetition and trying other "teaching methods) UNTIL that Child can cross whatever huddle that is making him/her lag behind.

DONT KEEP BEATING YOUR CHILD OR CURSING HIM..... TEACH AND TEACH AND TEACH THEM (without using cane or verbal assault!) until they get what you are teaching.

Some would not even get it (slow learners), some would only get it if you use symbols as they relate more with such methods than cramming.

Govt needs to help this father and others like him, to become better fathers.... instead of pouring Petrol on am already burning issue.

My Take, as a father.....a responsible and loving one for that matter, with grown 'kids' to prove it (yes, they will always be 'kids' as far as l am concerned )

Whether this was caused by Religion and/or psychological issues, the incident has everything to do with both. The outcomes of the mainstream religions of Xtainity, judaism and islam are less humane than other religions.

I am not into this religious-bashing rubbish because l know that "Your religion is in your heart and the 'reference' is how you relate with your fellow man".

Those who fight over religion or attack another over their religion are just FANATICS, no more, no less.

Focus on what the issue is, instead of attacking his religion or did you read somewhere in the Bible where his religion said he should "over-flog his daughters without compassion?
