Quit now, Bakare tells Yar’Adua

As the health of President Musa Yar’Adua continues to dominate public discourse, Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, based in Lagos, Tunde Bakare has charged the president to resign from office immediately.
Bakare who gave the charge yesterday while speaking at the church’s service on the theme “Beginning of the End” said the health challenge of the president warrants that he vacates office immediately as a patriotic duty to the nation.

He warned President Yar’Adua that “if you don’t leave the office, the office is about to leave you.
“ If the truth must be told, the health challenge of our president in spite of all propaganda to the contrary warrants his immediate resignation as a patriotic duty to our nation,” he said.
He said his duty as a servant of God is to warn the nation of the danger the country is in at this critical period of uncertainty about the health of the president and the controversy of who succeeds him in the event of any eventuality. He said the current situation of President Yar’Adua will throw the country into a precipice if care is not taken.

Bakare said it is one thing to be given a message and another thing for the people to receive it and change for the better so as to avert the wrath of God.
“The warning finger of a prophet is not an accusing finger. It represents a timely warning to people who might come under divine wrath except they repent,” he pointed out.
He continues: “it is not his fault. He would not have chosen all these sickness and diseases. He would have loved to serve this country like his father did in the first republic, like his brother did before he died. He would have loved to do it, but here comes physical incapabilities and infirmity.”

That notwithstanding, he said there is an urgent need for President Yar’Adua to resign his office in the overall interest of the nation.
“Much as my heart goes to the president and his family, we have consistently maintained that the presidency is not a birthright or hereditary title that requires the occupant to die before somebody takes over.”
He said the failing health of the president has created an illconceived vaccum in the leadership of the country. He maintained that Nigeria today neither has a functional president nor a functional vice president.
“It is an insult upon our collective intelligence for the president to travel for treatment under anesthesia, being in coma and does not tramsmit to his assistant.

One thing that amazes me is the way some people make recommendations that are only half measures. Who is recommended to take Yar'Adua's place as President should he quit on grounds of poor health? Not that nobody could; but my worry is that a message (termed 'prophetic') as such that makes no pointer to a solution does not seem quite helpful. Rather than 'prophetic', I see 'politics' at play.

All this talk about how the President should quit is in proper, all Nigerians should be praying for him including the Men of GOD. Pastors should concentrate on the work of the Lord and don't bring politics into it.

But with the health challenges, is the President fit to continue, or are some people using him to be close to the corridors of power?
