The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has said the country lost as much as $100bn in revenue last year as attacks by militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta cut crude output to a record low.

Kachikwu, who stated this on Tuesday in his monthly broadcast posted on his Facebook page with the title: ‘Oil sector militancy challenges: Road map to closure’, said the nation’s oil production fell by as high as one million barrels per day sometimes last year.

He said as part of ongoing efforts to end the militancy challenges in the oil sector, the ministry had come up with a 20-point agenda.

According to the minister, one of the critical challenges the country has is the militancy that has plagued the Niger Delta environment and disturbed oil operations.

He said, “At the highest point of this last year, we were producing 1.2 million barrels, which means we were losing literally a million barrels of oil per day. At that time also, we were basically losing an average, if you look at 2016, of over $50bn to $100bn of unearned income as a result of this disruption.

“Jobs were out; pipelines were strewn all over the place; refineries couldn’t work to capacity, and we couldn’t meet our contractual international obligations. And the economy basically suffered.”

Noting that oil price also declined by 60 percent over the last one and half years, Kachikwu said, “You see the massive problem that President Muhammadu Buhari has faced and had to deal with over this period. It is a massive problem.

“This is a problem that has consistently been there even before the government of President Obasanjo, and it went on into other governments. It is a problem that seems to be intractable. So, it is a difficult undertaking to try to embark on trying to resolve it once and for all, but we are very bullish about this.”

According to the minister, the 20-point agenda include engagement town hall meetings; inter-agency collaboration; ring-fenced state approach; security hold hands; peace and investment on state basis; focused investments in gas-to-power; incentive for peace scheme; massive civil infrastructure revamp; and Niger Delta Development Fund Initiative.

“All our pipelines are old; all our gas distribution systems are old; all our depots are hardly functioning. Working with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, we are going to embark on looking for third-party funds to massively begin infrastructure revamp of the assets that are required in the industry. If we do that, a lot of jobs will be created. In addition to that, we want to target specific investments in this area,” Kachikwu added.

Essentially, the whole country lost so much because we are saddled with a president whose ego is as big and hard as zuma rock! If the oil producing areas are that important, why not listen to them, get them to stop bombing and take care of their needs, then use some of the money coming in to change the fortune of those places?? Rather a sardonic/satanic president decided to take actions that will make the whole country loose so much rather than invest in those areas, all because he wants to be seen as the new Rambo. . . Meanwhile, this is a man whose hometown of daurra produces nothing. . If half of that amount is ploughed back into the oil producing areas in terms of building infrastructures and providing educational facilities for the people, won't that have been better since the government would still have something left, we would have had peace, and Forex would have been enough atleast to help curtail inflation?

Tough times operation crocodile tears was a failure. Anyway government needs do its job with ND. Then make plans to minimize the ND impact on economy by growing other sectors. Putting all your eggs in one basket is stupid.

No your dumb government deprived your shithole that money.

Out of Buhari stupisity, he removed the thing that kept the militants busy Aka education. In addition, not only did he take the only support they got, he still didn't fix the lands of the people and yet you expect them to keep quiet.

Blame Noone else for your incompetence.

That's a good thing
Buhari's initial plan was to isolate the East and destroy it. But with Biafra pressure and Militant actions, he rediscovered a new world and backpedaled. Buhari is responsible for the failure of his administration.

That is not enough reason to punish the people or for Buhari to take away what belongs to the people and use same to develop Abuja and Lagos! If governors, ministries and agencies stole from the Niger Delta, catch the culprits, try the culprits and jail the culprits based on the law! It is as simple as that. It is Nigerias defective federalism that gave rise to some of these political charlatans dominating all these state houses all over the country.. Stop supporting evil. Don't steal from the poor because their home governments stole from them. It makes no sense..

The president messed up big time. Osibanjo and kachikwu played a very big role with calmness being experienced in the creek. Diplomacy is always the best way to go.

It is that simple.. If he didn't start his trademark double standards and showed a real intention to carter for every body equally, folks would have even supported him against the militants blowing up the pipelines. But what we have is/was? a president who will cry that killing boko haram wass the same as killing northerners..., he does that dance in the morning then in the evening, he starts to fume at the sight of Tompolo... It beggars the question; Between Tompolo and BH, who ideologically represent a greater threat to Nigeria? Who is willing to sit and discuss issues with government? Apart from rampaging tribalism, Is there any other reason the president was willing to talk to BH but unwilling to listen to ND militants?? Is that reality not enough reason to provide militants with the local support needed to wage more wars against the government in their areas? A petty vindictive buhari was the cause..

Exactly! Those who throw a party after every blast would be the same flat oblongata cavemen who would be saying shiit about the state of the economy.

Well, sometimes i dont blame them. The mental handicap that comes with such a compressed skull could really make one hopeless.

Now, can the millitant bring back our 100b dollars?
As i said before, we suppose to protest to creek and otueke to demand for our 100b dollars that cause this recession.

buhari is not the main problem of the ND or nigeria in general but the bad eggs we have for governors, senators, reps, nddc chairmen and commissioners, these people are more interested in how much goes to their personal accounts than what the common man in the ND gets, and worse part we in the ND cheer them on with our strength and blame buhari for everything,u talk of buhari developing abuja like abuja was built over night, when gej was there what did he do for ND besides empowering militants who offer nothing meaningful to the society?
