Government House Owerri & The Okorocha Magic

It won't be out of place to say, everything Gov Rochas Okorocha touches, turns to gold. The state capital, Owerri has now been transformed to a model-modern state capital. The seat of power, Douglas House, Owerri has not been left out of the Midas Touch of the Governor.

An Igbo adage says, a na esi n'ulo Mara nma puta ama; a filthy government house will impact negatively on the workers, both civil servants and politicians and of course visitors won't take us serious. This might perhaps be the reason why no previous administration since the return to democracy in 1999 made any impact on the polity. It also gives credence to the saying that, you don't give what you don't have.

A visitor that was last in Douglas House prior to the advent of Owelle Rochas Okorocha's regime will have problems locating even the entrance to the seat of power. From the gate, to the reception, Banquet Hall, Governor's, Deputy Governor's offices, to the Executive Council Chambers to the Governor's Lodge, are mostly newly built structures befitting a place where government business can be conducted. Flowers have been planted with lights all over. Lawns are mowed regularly. Dustbins are evacuated as at when due etc.

One wonders how previous government's operated in filth and yet allegedly fleeced the state but found pleasure in taking our collective patrimony abroad. A former governor of the state proudly said he has no house anywhere in the state capital, no wonder he left it worse than he met it with his achievements only on the internet. To the contrary, Gov Okorocha more than 15yrs ago, had his Rochas Plaza situated at Government House Roundabout, 2 hotels, his Spibat residence amongst other property prior to being governor. He therefore has a stake here and indeed plans to live in the city after public service.

The current state of Douglas House is a tourist delight and the state government has provided buses to take visitors and children on excursion around.
