South Africa is the world's leading producer of marijuana, but most of it is consumed on the domestic market, which also absorbs the output of neighboring countries, notably Lesotho, where cannabis is the main cash crop.

its not today that South Africans blame Nigerians and other (African) foreigners for their woes. but such statement coming from a public figure is just too disappointing.

We are being targeted by international criminals, who are [making] factories of drugs in South Africa. They all come from Nigeria and live in Sandton."

who the hell is he to generalize like that. i wont be surprised if he was one of the people that instigated the Xenophobic attacks of 2007. that shows how shallow minded some of these S.A people can be. its not new that authority figures over there are making dumb statements. . . imagine the president advising people to take showers after intercourse to prevent HIV/AIDS. shame embarassed

as a frequent traveller, my heart bleeds when i hear about illegalities our people are engaged in abroad and i am frustrated about the treatment i get because i am a nigerian, dis as gotten worse over the years as more and more nigerians that have no business travelling out of the country find there way out, even from nations like india ,dis was not so as recent as the mid 90s,you go to china its the same thing,u go to the rest of asia its the same sad story phillipines, malaysia ,singapore, s koreea etc now a particular tribe is mostly responsible

now when i go towards the west- uk, ireland, usa etc another tribe is mostly responsible for the havoc,no tribe is left out as it is a function of population

i dont subcribe to this excuse of our leaders failing us only,i think as a nation collectively there is a lack of values yet there are many good just as there are many bad

it's like you lack understanding, i am telling you one thing, you are saying another thing. i said let those who wants to talk bad about the country or Nigerians continue, arguing or trying to kill them won't change anything, the best thing to do is to let your own light shine, when they see that there are Nigerians out there doing good, doing the opposite of what the south Africans and the rest think we are known for. they get confused, embarrassed of themselves and start to think proper.

now, i hope you understood my points now?
Re: South Africa Police Chief Blames Nigerians For South African Drug Problems by HadizaX: 10:25pm On Dec 14, 2009
its a crying shame on South Africa that they could come out and blatantly say that Nigeria is the source of their drug problem this just goes to show how deeply the plague of xenophobia has eaten into their system,

yet and still, we as Nigerians really need to face the problem that keeps biting us in the ass every day and every where we go, once you say you are a Nigerian in a foreign country, everybody stands at  alert watching your every move, why? not because we are all thieves or we have all done wrong but we have to realize that the wrongs of a few will eventually tarnish the image of the majority.

this is not the time to start pointing fingers at any tribe and saying that he is igbo or she is that, we are ALL Nigerians, most foreigners don't even know the difference, they just see us as one- NIGERIAN and the earlier we recognize this , the better for us.

it wasn't too long ago that i posted a topic of a Nigerian student caught trying to smuggle cocaine into the UK through his stomach, why must it always be us? we need to ask ourselves this question. these little mishaps here and there reflect on all of us and if we do not curb this, it is all of us that would pay the price of stigmatization, criticism and discrimination, it is time for us to wake up and realize that we need a change, we would destroy our country and leave nothing for our generation to come if this continues,

We can make a change no matter how little if every one of us decide that within my own sphere of contact i will deal as justly with my fellow man as possible regardless of the differences we may possess, i believe a change will happen,

GOD BLESS NIGERIA

A_K_O:

For me it is not about complaining about our image. It's about fairness and critical discourse; you cannot label another country's people for the ills in your society and remain silent about the role your own people are playing in fueling the problem.

It is not just politicians, it is ordinary people as well. South Africans complain that foreigners are flooding their country and competing for resources. But is it not their government/home affairs that is giving people visas? Why haven't they pointed a single finger at their own permissive government?

There are two sides to every coin.

In SA every Nigerian is a drug dealer, they don't want to know whether there are genuine and hardworking  people. As long as one is carrying the green passport, he's a suspect.
The policeman in question speaking is an incompetent dimwit. For him to blame others for his country's woes show how irresponsible he is. If he feels that those responsible for drug offense are Nigerians, why doesn't he fish and flush them out instead of whining.

I'm not absolving Nigerians of any blame, but it's a fact that the average South African hates Nigerians with a passion ( except maybe you are Kanu or Dare Art Alade ).
I recall during the reign of Abacha when also Nelson Mandela was  the president, South Africa was hosting a beauty pageant. Nigeria was also in the competition. Then Nigeria was being ruled by the military and we were facing serious human rights issues. Because Nelson Mandela did not want to identify with Nigeria, he went to the extreme. He asked the Nigerian contestant to leave his country. For someone who calls him self a great leader to act so petty was a shame.

South Africans again,

The problem with the lost-culture called South Africa is the delusion that they are part of the First World,  rooted from their self-acclaimed freedom from their masters, because they are now allowed to shop in traditional Master's complex and take their kids to first class play ground and school, a nice definition of freedom when majority of lands are still owned and controlled by the masters themselves. Hmmm, i guess the allusion of equality with slaves and masters led to an assumption ;an assumption that triggered a series of riots when 62 Africans were left dead, dead because they were believed to sought legal jobs in S.A, I have read about Xenophobia but not of this sort.

Lets talk crime, South Africa is believed to be the world's largest produces of Cannabis according to a research released by Interpol; a quarter of Cannabis seized in universe hails from South Africa.  South Africa is rated second for assault and murder (by all means) per capita and first for despoils per capita. South Africa's record of car Hijacking shouldn't be new to anyone, It is believed that Insurance companies no longer insures Volkswagen Citi Golfs as they are one of the most frequently hijacked vehicles in South Africa. They are ranked first for despoil  per capita,  It is estimated that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being despoil.d  than learning how to read. South Africa has some of the highest incidences of child and baby despoil in the world.

Nigeria is not perfect either, we have some real bag eggs but the Media focus seems to be our problem. I believe we have bad Nigerians there but its not enough to blame Nigeria for a portion of their crime, They should also blame us for despoil . I don't know the duty of NDLEA in Niaja because having spent some time outside my country it seems clear to me that we don't do drugs back home. I know there are lots of Nigeria retailing drugs in other countries, no doubt but it isn't limited to Nigeria alone.

Bullet-proof vest

Please if you go to South Africa for the Football world cup in 2010, dont forget to buy a bullet-proof vest. The possibility for you of moving outside of your hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum. Otherwise there must be a full escort: armed security guards and bullet-proof vests for you to wear everytime you go to see a match to the stadium. You have been warned, this is South Africa.

Xenophobic idiots, Nigerians and Zims are blamed for everything bad that goes down in their country and their citizens are big criminals as well. Funny how they call us criminals, and they apply in writing asking for our teachers.
Re: South Africa Police Chief Blames Nigerians For South African Drug Problems by mbulela: 2:51am On Dec 15, 2009
idiot Mr CELE, the police commisioner,
have you asked yourself two simple questions?
- how did this people get into the country?who granted them visas and under what circumstances?
- secondly, what makes this trade thrive so much?who are the buyers and what are the underlying factors driving its consumption?

You just open your big mouth talking crap in public without thinking. The South African society is detoriating faster than the Nigerian society and at a very alarming rate.
Most drug dealers are Nigerians no doubt but finding answers to the two sets of questions above is the right place to start not just making populist statements that just tickle the ears of gullible listeners without solving the problem.
This how the stealing ANC elite go around making hypocritical, populist and selfish comments that do not in any way address the fast rate of decay enveloping the south african society.

smaller countries have organised and functional embassies, yet go and see the market square called a high commission that the South African government operates in lagos.see the criminals that facilitate and are given visas and tell me why drug dealers will not run things in Jozi and Pretoria?

I don't blame them.If only we had a government.

Are you not aware of the xenophobic climate in SA? This guy is a police CHIEF, his job is to protect and serve ALL, and with these words he is encouraging xenophobic behavior. Like others have said, why hasn't he mentioned South Africa's thirst for narcotics? Its not only the wealthy whites in the suburbs of Joburg and Cape Town who NEED their fix, the blacks in the townships also like getting high. The poor people there are so fiendish that they were getting high off of anti-retroviral medication!

truly naija are directly or indirectly involved in most criminal activities in SA. Visited 2002 Coke was sold by some Igbo boys openly, some yorubas sold GL as gold to SA citizens. Visited a naija community close to Jo burg air port where stolen items (mostly electronic, phone, perfumes etc) from luggages check in into aircrafts are sold by naija guys. God bless u you dont take in your laptop as hand luggage just forget it.

On my way back was warn by an Ibo boy who was sending money to his cousin to take my laptop off my luggage else it will come back to him less then 4 hrs did not understand initially. After boarding Virgin naija had 3hrs delay, pilot annouce that 60 luggages were missing only for it to resurface later.
On getting to naija dem don tamper with most luggages except for those who chk in very late. Same happens to other foreign airline.

Most stolen items are bought by naija from the SA theives, SA citizens dont have raw cash they live on credit.

I found it very disgusting when people dont accept their wrong doings and behavours. South Africa is not the only country to complain about the bad behaiour of Nigerians. How many Nigerians have been deported from Libya of recent and how many are on their death row. China is also having the same problem with Nigerians and so many other countries. I know that some good Nigerians are paying the price for all these but we should not blame these countries whenever they cry out about our bad behavours and the consequences of it to their respective countries.

South Africa is very correct and it is their right to protect their country and their people.
