So you really think its the school that matter? If so why would you have different sets of students from the same school, say from U.I.? My friend, U.I, Ife, UniLag, UNN are all 5000th grade, not even among the first 1000 in the world.
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by SEFAGO(m): 6:56am On Dec 18, 2009
Doesn't really matter- you yourself know that some people at UI and Unilag would hands down beat some of the best Europe and America could offer.

I am talking about you

What do you know? Do you know the meaning of Magna cumlaude? It is never a second class degree. If you do not know, look it up. I scored 85% in my final exams and public defense. Ode!

Magna cumlaude is a Latin phrase meaning “with great honor.” It is a distinction awarded to students who have displayed remarkable academic distinction. As a general rule, Latin honors are used for undergraduate college degrees only, although they sometimes appear in high schools and at the graduate level. There is no universal standard for Latin honors. That means that a magna cum laude degree can mean different things, depending on the institution which awarded it.

Yeah I know what a Magna means, but its called second honors, I didnt call it second class. First honors is summa c.u.m. aude. Both are roughly equal to a first class degree at the undergraduate level.

Summa c.u.m laude is the highest honors and that is how the big boys roll- do u want me to link you to my Yoruba friend who graduated Summa cumlaude  from Harvard?  grin

abeg I want to sleep anyways goodnite.
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by Nchara: 7:09am On Dec 18, 2009
The gap between SCL and MCL is very marginal; you should know that. And obtaining any of these grades at the PhD level, especially for a foreigner, is no mean feat.

Talking about your friends again (funny that this time you tried to emphasize Yoruba grin), I have a few friends too with SCL. But  I prefer to pride in myself than in a friend. Sefago who are you and what do you have in terms of qualifications?

The last time you boasted of a Yoruba who obtained a PhD in Particle Physics when Zik was obtaining an MS in politics (and stuff like that) in the 1930; till today, you are still unable to show this person. You don come again abi? grin
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by Nchara: 7:16am On Dec 18, 2009
You are just catching on straw; even the man for whom the post was created probably did not study in Harvard, yet he has achieved this. Underachievers like you hide under the cloak of so-called big universities while their mates are garnering all the laurels.
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by SEFAGO(m): 7:31am On Dec 18, 2009
The gap between SCL and MCL is very marginal.

I doubt it. The problem is that the difficulty in getting SCL and MCL vary from school to school. There are countless Nigerians with SCL and MCL degrees here in the US- you know we are all good at excelling in school except of course for aboki. However, the number who get these degrees at top schools are very low.

I am not a liar and would freely admit that i dont have either of these levels. I am not telling you abt my qualifications- you are not employing me and two, I admit they are not all that yet.
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by Nchara: 7:38am On Dec 18, 2009
Indeed the gap is marginal and depends on Uni. Where I studied SCL= 90% and above while MCL is 80% to 90%. I got 85% and that is very marginal compared to 90%
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by SEFAGO(m): 7:47am On Dec 18, 2009
I studied at LMU Munich and that is the best in Germany and among the first 50 in the world. Note that the ranking vary yearly. LMU was 30 something globally a few years back

Its one of the old glory schools, I suppose like ETH Zurich and company. We are now in the 21st century.
Re: Nigerian Named Applied Research Chemist Of The Year by Nchara: 7:51am On Dec 18, 2009
My friend, keep spewing rubbish. ETH is as strong as Harvard. It is just a matter of every thing English being the leader of the world. I missed out an opportunity to work there because I had to travel to Nigeria after my defense. Been to ETH twice. Excellent facilities they got there.

SEFAGO chill on the brother abeg, he got a Phd. and a little award. Yes, might not be anything to you but you don't know his back ground and what he had to overcome. Nano tech is being tipped as the probable next big thing in tech so i personally admire his achievements and am delighted at what he does.

Dr. Nchara grin , may be the way in which you supplied the info gave the guy the impression you were trying to brag. What you have done is admirable cos i know There're countries in the world as we speak who don't have specialists in this area. So just keep doing what you're doing and hopefully threads like this one will one day carry your name on NL in the not too distant future.

Nchara:

Talking about ''good'' and ''bad'' universities, let me tell you a short story:
In 1999 after my NYSC, I went to interview for a job in Lagos. During the interview I met several other applicants from U.I., Unilag, Ife, etc and I was coming from a supposedly backyard state university in the East. But guess what, while I was scoring 85 and above on all counts, all those other guys were scoring 60. So it is not really the school you attended (although I obtained my MSc and PhD from some of the best universities in Europe) that matter, but yourself. I got the job instantly, worked for 3-4 years and off I zoomed for my MS program abroad on full scholarship. I got my present job even before defending my PhD thesis, and this was in a period millions, including professors, were losing their jobs all over the world.

Really?  grin

You keep emphasizing Harvard. Did the Prof we are discussing on this thread attend Harvard? You do not have to attend Harvard to be a great scientist. I studied at LMU Munich and that is the best in Germany and among the first 50 in the world. Note that the ranking vary yearly. LMU was 30 something globally a few years back

Hahahahahahaha

grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Bloody liar!!!

You want to claim you attended LMU Munich, the best university in Germany? LWKMD  grin grin grin grin grin

Foooooooooooool, your university is not even in the top 30 in Germany, talkless of top 50 in the world.  grin

Backwater university product, dem dey humiliate you with people with better qualifications from esteemed institutions you are now coming online to claim you went to LMU and topped your class grin, call me a liar, let me prove it.

Top of the class my arse.  grin grin grin grin grin grin

Or do you want me to get Erika or Klaus to come and confirm?  grin

Fraud!

LMU Munich is actually one of the better/best universities in Germany, though. Gottingen and Heidelberg are probably considered more prestigious, but I'm pretty sure it's inaccurate to call LMU Munich a "backwater university".
