Nigerians, we can only blame ourselves for our hardships. Nigeria is a democracy, not a dictatorship or monarchy. So when we find ourselves in a recession, we can only blame ourselves. Why? Because we elected an absolutely inept, uneducated, military head, as the head of a country in the 21st century. The time has long expired for military heads to be presidents, in this 21st century. And we're now seeing exactly why that is. Buhari doesn't understand economics, he doesn't understand development, he hasn't studied law on a university or doctoral level, he isn't anything close to being a scientist or analytically minded, he brings absolutely nothing valuable to the table. And we elected him as president. All of this can be said of Goodluck Jonathan as well. Were truly idiots.

The former president of the USA Obama received degrees from Columbia and Harvard, two of the best universities in the world. The prime Chancellor of Germany studied Physics in undergraduate, and has a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. Even Trump received a degree from arguably the best business university in the world, Wharton. Buhari, a military general, and a man who is clearly out of his league intellectually compared to other world leaders.

So never again, this cannot happen. We must learn our lesson by 2023 and promote intelligent, experienced leaders as a presidential candidates. I have made a list, but first I will state the criteria for my list.

1. You must have an undergraduate AND a graduate degree (PhD or Masters.) to qualify as president.

2. You must have a minimum of 8 years of experience in governing or jobs related to government.

3. You obviously have to be Nigerian and qualified to run for president.

The goal of this is to bring our BEST AND BRIGHTEST forward, Buhari is not our best, and no where close to being our brightest. Now with that being said, here are my proposing candidates for president in 2023, in no particular order.

Ogbonnayu Onu

Ogbonnaya Onu (born 1 December 1951) is presently the Minister of Science and Technology of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was the first Executive Governor of Abia State, Nigeria from February 1992 to December 1993.[1] He was the National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).,[2] until its merger with other Nigerian opposition political parties which resulted in the registration of the All Progressives Congress on July 31, 2013.

By 1976, he graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos. He later obtained his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Chemical Engineering (without passing through a master's degree) at the reputable University of California, Berkeley, California, USA, in 1980, where he did extensive work on coal liquefaction and production of synthetic fuels under mild conditions. He showed that it was possible under relatively mild conditions to produce synthetic fuels comparable with crude oil.

While in the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Onu was the President of the African Students Union; Member, Graduate Assembly of the University of California, Berkeley and also the President of the Nigerian Association of Northern California, Inc. At a time when many Nigerians who studied in the United States of America found it difficult to return home, Dr. Onu, out of love of country returned to his fatherland and took up appointment as a Lecturer at the University of Port – Harcourt, Choba, Rivers State. He later served as President General of his alma-mater, Izzi High School, Abakaliki, Old Boys Association.

Akinwunmi Ambode

Akinwunmi Ambode (born June 14, 1963), is the Governor of Lagos State. He was a civil servant for 27 years and a financial consultant before running for public office as Governor of Lagos State in 2015.

From 1981-1984, he attended University of Lagos where he studied Accounting, graduating at the age of 21.He also has a master's degree in Accounting from the University of Lagos, and he qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

Ambode was awarded the US Fulbright Scholarship for the Hubert Humphries Fellowship Programme in Boston Massachusetts. He also attended the Wharton Business School, for Advanced Management Programme. Other institutions he attended for courses and programmes, includes Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield, England, the Institute of Management Development, Lausanne, Switzerland, INSEAD Singapore and Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Boston, U.S.A.

In January 2005, Ambode was appointed the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance. From 2006- 2012, Ambode was the accountant general for Lagos State, in charge of all the financial activities of the state and directly responsible for over 1400 accountants in the state service. Under his watch, the State Treasury Office (STO) revolutionized the way Lagos State finances were raised, budgeted, managed and planned. In his six years as the Lagos State accountant general, the state’s financial performance improved visibly with the budget performing at a remarkable average of 85% annually

Geoffrey Jideofor Kwusike Onyeama

Geoffrey Jideofor Kwusike Onyeama (born February 2, 1956) is Nigeria's Minister for Foreign Affairs. Onyeama was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister of Nigeria in November 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Onyeama was born to the family of Nigerian jurist Charles Onyeama.[2] He holds Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree in Political Science from Columbia University, New York in 1977 and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree in Law from St John's College, Cambridge in 1980. He holds a Masters of Law (LL.M) from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1982 and a Masters of Arts (M.A) in Law from St John's College, Cambridge in 1984.[3] Onyeama was admitted as a Barrister-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1983 and was also called to the English Bar of the Grey's Inn in 1981

Onyeama began his career as a Research Officer in the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Lagos from 1983 to 1984. He then worked as a lawyer with Mogboh and Associates in Enugu, Nigeria from 1984 to 1985. In 1985, he joined the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) as an Assistant Programme Officer for Development Cooperation and External Relations, Bureau for Africa and Western Asia. He rose through the ranks at the WIPO to become Deputy Director General for the Development Sector in 2009.

Akinwumi Adesina

Adesina was born to a Nigerian farmer in Ogun State.[4] He received a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University) and a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University (1988).

Akinwumi Adesina is the President of the African Development Bank. He previously served as Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. Until his appointment as Minister in 2010, he was Vice President of Policy and Partnerships for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). In 2015, he was elected as the President of the African Development Bank. He was the first Nigerian to hold the post.

He worked at the Rockefeller Foundation since winning a fellowship from the Foundation as a senior scientist in 1988. From 1999 to 2003 he was the representative of the Foundation for the southern African area. From 2003 until 2008 to the present he was an associate director for food security. Adesina was the Nigerian Agriculture Minister from 2010 to 2015. During this time the Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was Ibukun Odusote. Adesina was named as Forbes African Man of the Year for his reform of Nigerian agriculture.

As you can see, Nigerians have PLENTY of capable, intelligent people to lead this country forward. I don't hate, or love Buhari, but there is no way we can allow a person like him to become the president of Nigeria ever again.

What are your suggestions for president in 2023 (or 2019)? Comment below, but remember, don't bring any dummy to lead Nigeria into the ground.

It is amateurish and childish. Academics is not an enablement for leadership. It is in fact a barrier to it.
If you don't have experience in.lfe or have not worked before ask people who did.
The US China and USSR conquered space when their leaders were not graduates with the exception of Kennedy. Hitler did not go to school but Germany in second world war was a technology giant and still is. Chairman Mao of China, great things he did ...Not much school. Education can even constrain your dreams, decisiveness and scope of action

This isn't the 20th century, it's the 21st.

But first, did you read? I clearly stated you need "8 years minimum of experience governing." Which they all have.

Feel free to make your list. I just found it to be to soon. Many of the candidates here are top of the line and are governing through the next 4+ years. So they can't possibly run. But if you can find worthy candidates, you can share them.

Sorry but u are one of Nigeria major problem. This worship and slavery to degree certificate has no bearing with good leadership. We had a supposed Ph. D holder who ended up running the country to the ground.

What we need is people who can think outside the box and who are creative. Buhari might not have been the best man for the job but he was definitely the better of the two candidates. And in his own way, he is trying. There is no magic button to fix Nigeria.

I have said this in other thread and I will just repeat it here "anybody who feels paper qualification is the key to governing Nigeria well is a GOAT". One would assume that our institutions loaded and headed by Phd holders are well run. Go to the tertiary institutions and see the level of fraud pepetuated by our so called VC an Rectors. You will marvel.

No. We need thinkers, and degrees are the best and only methods of determining who the best thinkers are. Unless you have another method instead of throwing around good sounding words like "creativity" and "out of the box". What does that even mean, and how is it measured? It can't be measured so it's irrelevant to even mention.

How can a non graduate, compare to someone who spent 7 years of his/her life asking and answering questions on a university level on the way to a PhD or other degrees. You realize that learning about politics, Philosophy, social sciences, and all other parts of life are ALL part of the journey of classes on the way to a graduate degree right?

I'm not saying graduates are perfect. I'm saying electing graduates is the best way to eliminate a large portion of the ineptness seen in a non graduate candidate like Buhari.

Many of the greatest people in this world either never went to school or are simply drop outs. With your 7 years u spent in school, you cannot even be assured of a job let alone become president of the country. Why? Because school is not a true test of intelligence. Many sleep, cheat, block or cram their way through school. Often times the best student in class is not the most intelligence, but who can give the lecturer exactly what he gave him back.

Knowledge does not equate to wisdom or intelligence, and certainly doesn't make up for a morally bankrupt, greedy and self-centered disposition. All the looters and convicted felons in Nigeria all went to school.

What is wrong with this Nigerian mentality. So are you then saying it is better to choose a non graduate or dropout from the village as president than men who went to the best universities in the world? I can not believe this.

Now I know why we have consistently made wrong decisions for president. The people who vote have stupid mentality like this (no offense, but saying we should look for uneducated people to lead Nigeria is stupid, no other word for it). Nigeria will only change when the people change. That's all I can say. We can continue to pass the blame to these politicians, but it is clear that we don't understand good candidates from the bad.

There is really nothing much to say on this thread. First, the OP is an idealist. Do people even have an idea how much it costs to have a successful presidential campaign? My sister, one can't spend anything less than 30 billion naira to do that. How many of the men he suggested have such money? Second, when has paper qualification become a measurement of leadership ability? If it was so, our universities, polytecnics and other institutions administer by academics would run seamlessly. Third, one man cannot do the job all by himself regardless of the certificates he possesses. Like they say in football: a coach is as good as the team he picks. Nobody is omniscient; no one knows it all. History is replete with stories of great leaders who had little or no formal education but performed excellently in office.
