True Nigerian has the most professional footballers making millions of dollars overseas.

True Nigerian has over 10 pro footballers in American and over 5 players in the NBA

What have this people done to eradicate poverty in Africa or Nigeria?

Hakeem the dream makes more than DIKEMBE and yet this man is inviting other NBA players to invest in a charity organization that led to a $29 Million

dollar hospital in Congo.  Excluding KANU that has the heart foundation.

I dont have time for Dikembe. He appears to be a publicity seeking individual. Yeah, he may have good intentions, but dont drum up your efforts on the media seeking publicity. I mean, for what? To get a pat on the back?

@Mamajama

First off, it's ashamed and not ashame.

It's the NBA and not MBA

It is Kanu!!! and not Kalu.

As for the rest of your post, you really do not know what these guys do with their money unless you hear it on t.v. I heard the boxer from Bayelsa (I've forgotten his name), opened an athletic centre in Yenegoa. Hakeem also got in trouble a while back for donating to a Muslim charity linked with Al - Qaeda. Some of these guys do give back, maybe not $29 million.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Mamajama(m): 4:23am On Jan 24, 2007
Yeah Hakeem donated to a charity in Saudi Arabia not Nigeria. The boxer from Bayelsa that was recently rubbed and stabbed while on vacation in Nigeria
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by 4Play(m): 4:25am On Jan 24, 2007
I don't think that there are that many rich Nigerian sports people
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Mamajama(m): 4:31am On Jan 24, 2007
are you serious? do you know Nigeria has the most professional footballers in Africa? Even with the little that all this guys make, can they start a

foundation or use their status to invite investors to donate to a charity organization that will be beneficial to the society in Nigeria?
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by 4Play(m): 4:34am On Jan 24, 2007
Do u know how many Nigerian girls that have benefited from the financial largesse of Nigerian sports men

Nigeria has a lot sports people but I don't think they are raking in money on the scale people think

Another thing is that sports is a funny sort of profession in that your career is of a very short duration
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Mamajama(m): 4:52am On Jan 24, 2007
True but all we are asking is the awareness not for them to put their life savings into the foundation.

you will be amazed what you can get out of people when you ask for help. There was a story of a shopper holic lady on CBS that spent $20,000 in credit

card. she opened a website and begged people to donate $1 to help her get out of debt . She ended up collecting over $14,000. This athletes can make a difference in their community back home
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by BigB11(m): 5:17am On Jan 24, 2007
Nigerians are labelled as being crooks, while Nigeria as a nation is being labelled as being unstable, uncivilized and very dangerous.
Let's face the fact, Nigeria at the moment is not enticing or attractive enough to pull any positive attention.

We need to get our shiiiit together first, before pointing fingers at the celebrities.

By the way, @MAMAJAMA; you do not need to be a celebrity to contribute towards developing your country; believe me, you can make it happen from out there in Chitown.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Ndipe(m): 5:59am On Jan 24, 2007
Yeah, no thanks to IBB for reducing our storied nation into this pitiable state that it is currently in.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Seun(m): 12:10pm On Jan 24, 2007
By going about their gainful businesses, the common people of Nigeria are rapidly developing the country.
We do not need crumbs from the table of so-called celebrities to move us forward: we have the power within us!
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by LoverBwoy(m): 12:30pm On Jan 24, 2007
a bit confusing, this is not about crumbs, this is not even about developing the country- i think some people still have we vs them attitude

Building hosipitals, sports facilities, water and the likes is not about crumbs  angry
City workers, have charity dinners
football clubs and players have charity games
celebrities sell off their personal items for charity in other parts of the world; do they consider it as crumbs?

a little here and there goes a long way
changing lives

ffs attitude  angry

Someone told me once there are some greedy capitalist in nigeria that dont actually want things like these ( charity) because there are shamelessly benefitting from the state of the country
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by niyooo(m): 1:35pm On Jan 24, 2007
@ lover,

I agree with some of your points. The thing is that many of these rich folks are benefitting from the status quo as it is now. The refineries are not working, who imports fuel and who are those benefitting from this? Them of course. The transportation system is below substandard, inefficient to totally non-existent railway system, who owns the big haulage/transportation companies? them of course and many other examples. Anyway may God help us.

@ Seun,

It's not about them against us, any effort that Nigerians in diaspora (whether in sports or other spheres of life) can contribute towards alleviating the suffering of the masses should be done and appreciated. Just affecting one person's life can go a long way in helping others. All that's required is the will.

Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by my2cents(m): 5:32pm On Jan 24, 2007
First and foremost, and I know this will ruffle a few feathers here (and I intend to do so on purpose grin), no one owes the community anything. It is their money and they should spend it as they wish. There is no shame in spending your own money and not wanting to share. They, and not others (most likely the communists and socialists amongst us - ha!) should determine how their money is spent. If they want to spend it all on themselves, so be it. If they want to, as a Nigerian, spend it on a charity in Dubai as opposed to Nigeria, so be it. Again, it is their money and they should be in control of it, period!

Having said that, and I think a few of you have brought this to light, just because you haven't heard of what someone is doing, doesn't mean they aren't doing anything. I for one blv in what the Bible says about not blowing your own trumpet. I do a lot of things for which, even when it's insisted, I give a very stern warning for publicity to be 0%. I personally don't like unnecessary attention, that's all.

Oya, let the "how dare you say they shdnt give back to their community" critics attack me. I am well armed tongue
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Mamajama(m): 6:23pm On Jan 24, 2007
my2cents attitude like that demoralized the nation. so since you are in ATL you don't have a sense of belonging to Nigeria?

remember this my friend there is no place like home, and you can enjoy all the good amenities USA has to provide but

who will repair Nigeria if you and I don't go back and contribute in a positive manner? We all know it's their money and they can spend it any way they like. but they are furtunate to be celebrities not by LUCK but by the grace of God and probably someones assistance.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Dapo4u(m): 6:37pm On Jan 24, 2007
Yes it is their hard earned money  so they should live and die with it.I can name some players who are earning less  than their Nigerian counterparts and who are giving back to the Society that produced them.Dessaily wasnt brought up in Ghana, after the climax of his professional career,he went back home to help the needy there.Veira in senegal,Eto'o for cameroon,Sivestre(Man utd) is not from Guinea, yes he was there last year.Kanu may not be the Nigerian richest player yet he has shown to his other colleagues that it is a virtue when you give back to the society.Carry go kanu, may you live long and live forever.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by my2cents(m): 6:41pm On Jan 24, 2007
mamajama,

my 2nd paragraph totally answers your question. Let me retort, just in case wink

"Giving back" should not be a right but a privilege, so to speak. No one should be obligated to give back. In other words, if I want to give back, let it be out of my own free-will and not because I am being made to feel guilty not to. Also, again based on my 2nd paragraph, when I do give (again, based on free-will and not because I "have to"wink, I will do so under the radar. I am the kind of person who doesn't like publicity/noteriety. Finally, I have "given back" whenever I deem fit, and again, not because I "had to".

who will repair Nigeria if you and I don't go back and contribute in a positive manner?
The Italians emigrated here en masse in the early 20th century. Who repaired the "old country" as they like to call it, and who is still repairing it today? The emigrants or those who were "left behind"? No offense, but you may be under the false impression that all those who emigrate from Nigeria to the diaspora will eventually move back. Not a reality at all. You may move back and perhaps your children, but I bet you that at some point, one whole generation will wake up one day and ask themselves, "y r we spending thousands of $$ to fly intercontinentally to build houses we will never live in, buy cars we will neve drive, etc?" At that pnt, you wd hv long been worm food tongue

I hope this explanation helps.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Dapo4u(m): 9:18pm On Jan 24, 2007
I cannot but agree with you, giving back to the society that nutures you to stardom is based on individual volition, nonetheless, let me sound a bit religious, every single rich man will be questioned for every hundred poor people that do not benefit from his wealth on the day of accountability.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by my2cents(m): 9:52pm On Jan 24, 2007
dapo4u,

Now u enter into another realm, a realm into which I can not, and will not follow LOL tongue
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Seun(m): 10:24pm On Jan 24, 2007
If you want to alleviate our "suffering", come here to start a business that alleaviates suffering and we will pay you.

How much money do celebrities make anyway? Most of it goes into paying the parasites that surround them.

As for you, the person that started this thread, why don't you send all your money to Nigeria?
Why not do what you want with your own money and leave celebrities out of it? Charity of mouth is irrelevant.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by my2cents(m): 10:28pm On Jan 24, 2007
Well said Seun,

Why some pple hate those who have money (cos at the end of the day, take it or leave it, it's about hatred and envy), I have no idea.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Seun(m): 10:32pm On Jan 24, 2007
giving back to the society that nutures you to stardom
As a celebrity, people patronize you because they enjoy doing so. That's not "nurturing to stardom". Rather your fans are just satisfying their own selfish desire for entertainment, which you are providing. The money you make is payment for the entertainment you provide, so it's rather silly to say that one is obligated to give it back. (It's like asking the cashier at Mr. Biggs to "give back" to you after you've gobbled up your meat-pie. That's ridiculous!)

Why some people hate those who have money , I have no idea.
It's because they think they can never have money. They've given up on the hope of becoming rich through work.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by my2cents(m): 10:34pm On Jan 24, 2007
and to follow up on ur 2nd point Seun cool,

Such pple are under-achievers who, like the proverbial crab, want to drag back down, the crab(s) that are trying to leave the basket.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by 4Play(m): 10:36pm On Jan 24, 2007

Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by my2cents(m): 10:40pm On Jan 24, 2007
Nah 4 play,

I wouldn't go that far - I have been banned by him as a matter of fact tongue

I am not too sure on where Seun stands on certain things, but when it comes to capitalism, we agree at least 99%

Besides, I wasn't aware of a rule that says we are not to agree with the moderator grin

If this is the root of the problem, then no amount of logic change their minds. Perhaps only success can.
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by 4Play(m): 11:19pm On Jan 24, 2007
If u don't think celebs should "give back" using the logic that they earned their wealth in the first place, then same appplies to most wealthy people. Why should anyone "give back" when they earned the money in the first place for services offered.

The reason why people pick on celebs is that their is,rightly or wrongly, the impression that they are overpaid for their services. Why for instance should a footballer earn 25 million naira a week for playing football.?

Hence the thinking is,that they more than anyoneelse, apart from wealth inheritors, have a unique responsibility to give back to the community

(1) Because they enjoy helping others. (2) To enhance their image in the eyes of the public.

Footballer earn millions much for playing football because of the millions of fans addicted to the game.

Hence the thinking is, that they more than anyone else, apart from wealth inheritors, have a unique responsibility to give back to the community
Since your argument is wrong, your conclusion is also wrong. Giving back is something you do because you want to. Wishing otherwise doesn't make it so. The public can't eat its entertainment and have it.

Seun:

So what is wrong in calling to the attention of celebs, the fact that charitable giving can be self satisfactory and is good public relations? They kill 2 birds with one stone, they get to do good while enhancing their sense of enjoyment and self image.
Seun:

That is partly true. However part of the reason for the wage inflation is due to the Bosman ruling. In essence their wealth is partly due to a product of law than simple economics. Some of that wealth can disappear if the EU accepts proposals for a salary cap that will regulate wages

It might not be too much to ask footballers, for whom clubs often spend over 50% of their turnover to give back to the community.A lot of clubs have gone under trying to pay these wages while laying off people on meagre wages

My conclusion is that their is a case to be made for asking celebs to give back not just for the good humanity but for theirs. They should follow the examples of other philanthropists who have done same.

In many cases the more celebs are seen as stuck up,the more likely it is there will be public resentment against them which will be inimical to their interests. There will be greater calls for regulation and less suport for enforcing piracy laws when it comes to illegal downloading of music and movies which actually hurts celebs in their pockets
Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by Mamajama(m): 2:43am On Jan 25, 2007
it is pathetic to read what some of you guys like Seun and my friend my2cents are writting on this issue. 1st let me bring your attention to the time when

KANU had his 1st open heart surgery. Phylantropist like MKO donated $10,000 to help paid his medical bill. DO you guys know what influence this so

called celeb have on youth? This guys are HERO and over 50% of kids want to be like PELE or OKOCHA or MJ. go to any civilized country like America.

celebs have charity foundation and voluntary service they per take in almost every weekend. in essence why does the churches feed the homeless? it's

a sence of belonging and helping one or two people achieve their dreams. And for MR SEUN I have my foundation in making, hang tight and you will be

invited to contribute. Let me ask you one personal question SEUN and my2cent. if you give a #10 to a begger on the street. will it break you? or will it makes you feel good.
