Lagos To Pass FOI Bill January 2010 ! by Gbawe: 6:36pm On Dec 31, 2009 |
Fashola really is something else. I have no doubt at all that Fashola will be a great President if he is given the chance to lead Nigeria. The most special quality of Fashola is that he does not play politics with important issues like 99% of our political leaders do. If this effort is not derailed by political mischief and Lagos goes on to pass into law the FOI bill , then this would be a highly laudable and bold precedence to set for the rest of our useless and anti-people leaders like Yar Adua, Aondoakaa, David Mark et al. http://huhuonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=893:lagos-government-sets-agenda-right-plans-to-pass-foi-bill-in-january-2010&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=18 Lagos Government Sets Agenda Right, Plans to Pass FOI bill in January 2010 |

This is a very good development. The LSG should be commended for this Bill as it further cements the image of Lagos as progressive and democratic (well, at least under Fashola's administration). This will go down well with foreign and domestic investors who value transparency in government. What Lagos needs now are good investigative reporters who can dig into government records to get to the bottom of things. Reporters in Nigeria will be the weak link in this chain. But who can blame them when law enforcement is incapable of protecting them from harassment and assassinations. I hope government and the courts in Lagos will put their full weight (and teeth) into enforcing the FOI act. Halfhearted enforcement has always been the Achilles' heel in a good intention such of this. |

. . . , and maybe this might spur those thieves in the NASS to do likewise. |

I remember hinting possibly being the best this administration could ever do from the beginning and now that I finally see it is happening. If and when this happens, it will be the greatest gift this man gives to the people of Lagos, and Nigeria as a whole to date! |

puskin: I hope so but I seriously doubt it. It is unlikely that such a pro-people and anti-elite bill will be passed under one of the most compromised and elitist Senate President Nigeria has ever had - David Mark . Bankole , the speaker of the house of Rep , is a staunch 'establishment man' who will never put his neck on the line for a better Nigeria. Dora Akunyili , our Info Minister, is a highly sycophantic Politician who is determined to tell the worst lies on behalf of the internationally discredited Government of Yar Auda . In Aondoakaa , we have the most blatantly crime-abetting Justice Minister and AGF Nigeria has ever had. With these folks in key positions, I doubt the FOI bill will be passed into motion , at the federal level , under this Government. A look at how Mark, Bankole, Ekweremadu, Aodoakaa and Akunyili have all handled the current health saga of Yar Adua, that is a making a mockery of our Constitution , shows that patriotism and a desire to serve Nigeria and Nigerians is something totally missing amongst the relevant leaders of this current Government. If , theoretically , twenty states pass the FOI bill into their state law there might be a chance the FG will be shamed into following suit but I doubt we have even 3 Governors ready to reject the Status quo let alone 20 !!! |
