Despite its vast oil riches and impressive economic growth, Nigeria has struggled to lift its people out of poverty over the past three decades.

That fact stands out in the World Bank’s 2017 Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals, which shows that 35 million more Nigerians were living in extreme poverty in 2013 than in 1990. The Atlas tracks the progress countries are making to meet 17 development goals set out by the United Nations, such as reducing economic inequality, the use of clean energy, and literacy rates. Among the 10 most populous countries for which data is available, only Nigeria recorded an increase in the number of citizens who live in extreme poverty over the period of the study. The Atlas defines “extreme poverty” as living on less than $1.90 a day.

While the ballooning number can be linked to a population surge in Nigeria (the country grew from 96 to 174 million people between 1990 and 2013), this doesn’t fully account for the persistence of extreme poverty in the country. All 10 of the biggest countries in the World Bank’s report also registered population increases over that period, barring Russia. Nigeria’s 81% population increase was dwarfed by Ethiopia, which saw a 96% increase over the same period.

Nigeria’s progress has been significantly impeded by its inability to distribute the country’s immense oil wealth to citizens. This is corroborated by a recent report from the Legatum Institute, a London-based think tank, which measured “prosperity delivery” to citizens in comparison to a country’s actual wealth. Of the 38 countries covered by the research, Nigeria ranked 26th, with the report saying it was “under-delivering” prosperity to its citizens.

Corruption and incompetence are to blame, and last week served up another reminder of how much malfeasance costs the country. Emails leaked by anti-corruption charities Global Witness and Finance Uncovered suggested that a $1.3 billion payment by oil giants Shell and Eni in 2011 for a lucrative but undeveloped Nigerian oilfield never went to the public trust for which it was intended. Instead, almost all of the money (nearly half of that year’s national education budget) was divvied up as kickbacks between high-ranking government officials.

While other countries, like India and China, are working towards improving the well-being of their citizens, politicians in Nigeria are busy looting the future of generations unborn. The annoying part is the unfathomable stupidity of her youth celebrating mediocrity and defending thieves on this platform.

Wake up, guys! You guys deserve better lives than what you are currently enjoying.

The country keeps going backwards.
A country where people ride private jets without any visible sources of income.
A country where derelict are in charge or in power. Nigeria - sinking since 1983

I pity those that are hoping that Nigeria would develop with the status quo, thats simply impossible, Nigeria will continue plummeting until there is radical restructuring. China, India, Brazil and other populous countries have continued to reduce poverty to its barest minimum because every citizen is productive while in Nigeria, 10 million youths are roaming the streets of the North as beggers in the name of almajiri, millions of girls of school age in the same North are idle in their homes in the name of purda. Nigeria is doomed with the status quo, it will keep deteriorating and North will be the worst hit and to make matters worst for them, they keep lying to themselves that all is well. SHAME!

There is no way forward for nigeria. Things will only get worse. This is because nigeria itself was not created by us but by foreigners who out of greed and power, joined hundreds of indegenous ethnic groups without minding the enormous negative effect it will bring to its people. So my friend, nigeria will only get worse

86million poor people in Nigeria is about the half of the population of Nigeria. It's more than North issue though they must be worst hit. Nigeria is an expired country, nothing good can ever come out it.

Since 1960, you guys have always blamed your leaders. If i check through, it means that your fathers and grandfathers also did same. Most of these leaders you blame grew up in the same society like you and i...they are not from congo or greece. Also, a large sum of your leaders were not known 15years ago.
Dont you think nigeria's problem is beyond leadership?

You've captured the problem well: Nigeria's problem is the great mass of Nigerians themselves, most of whom are insanely tribalistic, woefully ignorant (yet highly opinionated), greedy for quick riches, indifferent to their civic responsibilities, and superstitious in the extreme, spending far more time in churches and mosques than they do grappling with the science and technology that actually makes nations rich.

And population growth, Nigerians breed like rats, I laughed hard when the article said "immense oil wealth". Anyways, we have deluded ourselves so much that foreigners are joining the delusion. Less than 2mbopd does not qualify as wealth for a 180m population.
Nigeria is a very poor country living off the magnanimity of other responsible nations, it is ridiculous to think Nigeria is wealthy.
For every Nigerian male out there, there are adult females opening their legs without protection for him, the result is a staggering population explosion that nullifies whatever gains Nigeria earns as a nation.

Absolutely correct, the thought process of the people in Nigeria is holding her back.
The average Nigerian think like a squirrel, how can a very shallow mind build a decent society?

I beg to disagree with you. It was not this bad during the days of Azikiwe, Awolowo and Bello, those leaders had a different ideology and knew what true leadership entails not these crop of selfish, clueless and looting-mongers we have now as leaders. Nigeria was working perfectly well when true federalism was being practiced but the reverse is the case now where the whole resources have been centralized thereby making the center very strong and weakening the regions giving room for massive corruption and struggle for power and control of the enormous resources. Politics is about who gets what, when and how? The present leaders have all turned down reverting to regionalism because of their selfish gains as against what was obtainable back then. So i still maintain our leaders are our problem

as long as d current feeding bottle almajiri economic system (robing peter to pay paul economics) still exist, nijeriya will NEVER develop!
