undecided

Brazil has 206 million more cows than Nigeria but none of them are found on the streets.
Even India, the world’s top cattle rearer ( 303 million ) has none of its cattle roaming the streets either.

(And much of Africa isn’t that bad)
Both Ethiopia (54m) and Tanzania (24.5m) have more cows than Nigeria but the West African ‘giant’ has decided to top the chart in terms of unruly behaviour.
Tanzania is particularly known for its refined and well-organised behaviour as is Kenya, a country with similar herd numbers (18.4m) as Nigeria.

(A look at tiny, grass scares Japan)
Even Japan, a country much smaller in size, still maintains its 101 million cows in perfect check despite having a similarly large population (126m).
It will be almost impossible for a person to know the country had so many cows even if he were to live there for a decade but Nigeria has decided that it knows the business better.

(It’s a Behavioural Problem)
The situation is rather a behavioural one. It really has nothing to do with the need or search for pasture. The rearers chose to move and off they went. They even leave locations already filled with sufficient pasture because it was their nomadic tradition to move about.
Nigeria has pasture everywhere (except in the northern-most sahel region bordering Niger Republic). One doesn’t need an evergreen forest before he settles down with his cows. The situation is of course a behavioural one.

(A Rejected Proposal)
A proposal once placed by Nigeria’s Agricultural Minister, Mr. Audu Ogbeh, for the Federal Government to build up ranches across the country was rather surprisingly sternly resisted by some members of the Northern Cattle Rearers Association (Miyetti ) who warned that their millennial long ‘tradition’ and production method “should not be changed.”

Simply put, their roaming action was a choice and was not to be questioned. The provision of localized pasture therefore wasn’t needed for it was never their problem.

(Problems in the Christian south)
In the southern part of the country many persons have rather been met with hardship from the menaces of these roaming herdsmen.

The cattle rearers move boldly into farmlands and peoples property, feeding their cattle anywhere and on whatsoever they find. They resist calls for ranches but move southwards in bold land struggles.
It has not been uncommon of them to feed their cattle on farm crops, even those nearing maturity and almost to be harvested.

(Security Agencies)
The situation has strikingly failed to garner the necessary attention of relevant security agencies many of whom rather preach about the ‘right to roam’, ‘freedom of movement’ and the herdsmen statutory right to feed cattle wherever they needed ‘necessary pasture.’
According to their doctrine, security agencies could do nothing in stopping the herdsmen. Perhaps all they could do was to prevent their continual possession of arms.

(A Covert Religious Operation)
With the clashes between the intruding northern herdsmen and land owners in the south, many persons have described the intrusion of these herdsmen as a white pretext for covert operations in southern territories.
The theory cannot easily be refuted given the massive death toll of persons since 2015. Over 4000 persons have been killed to date, shockingly four times the number by Boko Haram.
These have almost entirely Christians.

(The Agatu Massacre)
In 2015, roaming herdsmen invaded a Christian community in the Central part of the country (Benue State), killing over 300 persons a single night (by popular media accounts and over 500, by some reports on social media).
Literally speaking the village was raided. The thousands of community residents had to flee their village in dread of the invaders and persons left behind were made to meet a sad fate.

(Govt: We will look into it)
The government refused to react over the matter for almost two weeks despite calls by organisations from nearly all corners to do so. Fast forward, at the end of two weeks it issued up a statement to face up the heat saying that it was setting up a committee with the promise “to look into it.”

(Then the matter died down)
As it’s popular with so many other Nigerian reactions the matter slowly died down . It took about a week or two and all was forgotten. And it’s getting to almost two years now, the village’s dead were never commemorated ,
1800 have been added more in the state since then; 16 more villages were ransacked and the government maintained its headline of looking into it.

It is not known if any of the herdsmen has ever caught or prosecuted. But locals say their premises have been turned into the herdsmen’s territories.

(There were other massacres)
The sad situation rather vastly spread. The assurance of not being sought for by security agencies gave the herdsmen the courage and confidence to escalate their activities, make it more deadly and more frequent. Today it has all gone but too deep.

In a country where matters hardly gather necessary attention or are forcibly seen through to the end by anybody (government and media alike), it wasn’t difficult for the herdsmen continue their phoney activities.

They reproduced such massacres in the states of Kaduna, Enugu, Ekiti, Benue, Ondo and others in the months that followed and seemed to have carefully chosen their victims for in a country that is quite deeply terrestrially separated by what religions people profess, all the victims seem to have been of Christian regions.

(Then, Politicians defended them)
There were little or none of these persons ever caught and to make matters worst, some politicians of northern extraction went so far even as to defend the herdsmen.
One of them, Senator Dagiri Alkali, said that the herdsmen were to be left alone for all their actions were in “self-defense .”

(Cattle Rearing Abroad)
Now overlooking the sorry state of the country’s status let us look at how cattle rearing is done abroad. Cattle rearing is a big and honourable business. It contributes to over $100bn of Brazil’s GDP , $34bn of Japan’s and
$158bn of India’s .
It accounts for almost 40% of Nigeria’s agricultural GDP together with other livestock proceeds.

Cattle is used for meat and milk production a daily consumable by nearly all humans. Livestock science and its associated sciences have become deep subjects of research and development by many companies and countries abroad in a bid to get the most out of their livestock by the most advanced natural practices known to man.

But in Nigeria, the instinct to advance seems foreign and contrary to nature. “As it was in the beginning” has soothed the country very well. The country though continues to preach that it believes it has a future. (It has been 57 years since it gained independence).

Photo: Japan recently began to use of tracking sensors ,
cameras and robots in a bid to understand cattle feeding cycles and optimise their feeding/ milking periods in order to get the most out of them by purely natural operations.

(Would that Nigeria’s herdsmen could be modernised)
Of all global struggles to move from one stage to the other in life, it is difficult to understand why a country chose to stick perpetually to a stone-age mentality which was never even the case of their counterparts as of that time.
For a profession that is now goes along with robots, food nutritionists and organized researchers centers, the least the country could have granted it was sane ranches and freedom and peace for all others.

But as long as the Nigerian government continues its laisser-faire mentality (to say the least) it may be only natural to conclude no sane economist should believe in its ‘future’.
The criminal herdsmen must be brought to book and the genuine ones mordernised—that was the whole point of civilisation afterall.

Sometimes people stick to crude mentalities not because of they are obstinate but because they have never experienced novelty.
Perhaps it’s time to forcibly train these guys. What would one say? It’s hard to ever imagine them like their counterparts with lab coats, gloves and organised environments.

It shows some certain group of people have A1 in ignorance.

Nomadic farming belongs to the stone age.

Why are goat, rabbit, sheep farmers in Nigeria not practising nomadic farming too? undecided

If nomadic farming is not banned in Nigeria, then I will never caution anyone that believes in the Jihadist agenda.

no wonder,
this further gives credence to what one alhaji said that " compared to some african countries, people in naija are living like mad people".

are we now going to blame neocolonialism or conspiracy theory as the reason behind this behaviour op is talking about.

indeed this post has clearly shown that it is individuals that will determine how decent and organized their environment is going to look like.

the people that are responsible for the anomaly should continue, till their cup gets filled. they should remember individuals and civilizations that rose up tried to do gragra by infringing on other people right, were are they today? all gone.

As if Nnamdi Kanu wasn't right when he said Nigeria is a Zoo country

Forget the mumu tribe that like to suffer for nothing, even if you provide animal tribe for them them go still prefer to parade them with guns and bullet committing mehem in towns and villages because their cow is more important to human, and some animal in human body will come here and say peaceful Biafra agitators are their problems

Lol....Nigeria will get better. Will we surely get the dividend of Democracy oneday. Nigeria has been so Profitable on the part of our Leaders, but they are not willing to give us our own share of the Investment (dividend )

Should we dissolve Nigeria? Should we Merged Nigeria with another country (if at all it's possible)? Should we continue to have the iota hope for our dear country ?

The decision to be taken depends on we Nigerians and this decision should not be at the detriment of our Future and Unborn Generations.

no land in your state for cow rearing but you like cow meat abi? continue.

You are the one that is confused. Why can't they buy the land themselves and set up ranches?

The poultry farmer, was it the government that gave him/her free land to start poultry?

The trader that is doing his/her business, did the government give him/her free shop to sell things?

If you want to rear cows in Abia state, why not buy land and set up a ranch? Is that not common sense?

Glad u brought this topic OP. He's the reality for every Nigerian to grasp. You won't defeat herdsmen till you take away their market share. Buy land up north fence it with Barbed wire, have a little irrigation, buy your hay and have a few farm hands. The government will put ranching as proriety when they see the tax revenue, saftey, higher product of dairy and meat.

Til then we can argue rationality but when Herdsmen pockets are still full of money. Nothing will change.

and you think common sense is common to those nomads abi?
this is why some people get themselves killed by those nomads, they go arguing with them, expecting them to have the same understanding they have.
these people roam around in the bush but lately they have been constituting nuisance and D government is like, lets have space for them in each state and tell them to do whatever they want to do within that space while we benefits from their activities and you are there comparing them with someone who has been leaving in town who sees a need and want to meet the need abi?

Nigeria has a long way to go most especially our northern brothers, who love cows more that human being that is not their tribes.
