Lagos

A Lagos State pilgrim arrested during the last hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia over illegal possession of fake $22, 000 has been convicted to serve a jail term of eight years.

The pilgrim, simply identified as Alarape from Agege local government, had gone for last year’s pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia with about 3,900 other pilgrims from Lagos state to perform the hajj, but had ulterior motives, which led him to carry along fake $22, 000.

While the last batch of Lagos pilgrims returned last December, Alarape did not return with them as he was detained by the Saudi police in connection with the offence.

A source in the Lagos State Muslims Pilgrim Board told THISDAY last week that the pilgrim had been convicted and jailed for eight years.

In his reaction, Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture and leader of the Lagos pilgrims to Saudi Arabia , Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, said Alarape broke the laws of Saudi Arabia and should bear the consequence of his dastard action.

According to the commissioner, “He (Alarape) broke the law of the land and there is nothing we can do about it. We warned them, we had seminar for them before we left for Saudi Arabia where we taught them to be good ambassadors of the state and the nation while in the holy land.”

Alarape was arrested in November 2009 by the Saudi Police for being in possession of fake $22, 000 from which he had been spending undetected.

He was said to have successfully exchanged $100 out of the fake money to Saudi Riyadh, while he was later caught as he tried to exchange more of the fake dollars to Saudi currency.

It was gathered that a further search in the room where he lodged in Saudi Arabia led to the discovery of the rest of the fake dollars, leading to his arrest.
