A grief-stricken pet owner killed himself because he struggled to cope with the death of his beloved cat, an inquest heard.

Bachelor Michael McAleese, 44, was devastated after 13-year-old tabby cat Sophie died in his arms after suffering a stroke.

The recluse - who was not known by his neighbours - was so traumatised by the loss that the dead cat 'slept' on his bed for three days afterwards.

Mr McAleese then told a man who came to collect Sophie for cremation that he would kill himself.

Five days after the cat's death Mr McAleese posted a moving video in the moggy's memory on YouTube, which featured pictures of her backed with sad violin music.

Unemployed Mr McAleese captioned the video with: 'This is in her memory. She was such a wonderful little cat.

2 C. N Madanraj and wife Tarabai

Unable to come to terms with the death of their pet dog, an elderly couple in southern India committed suicide in 2007 by hanging themselves.

The bodies of 67-year-old retired soldier C.N. Madanraj and his wife, Tarabai, 63, were found in their home in a suburb of Hyderabad.

Police said the childless couple had held a burial ceremony for their dog of 13 years, called "Puppy," and hosted a feast for friends before hanging themselves in their bedroom.

"The couple described the grief over their pet dog a suicide note they left on March 29 2007.

3. A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Amberpet in Hyderabad as she was "upset" over the death of her cat.

Swarnalatha, who was very fond of her cat, poured kerosene and immolated herself at her house two days after her pet died.

A purported suicide note was found which stated that she was ending her life after the death of her cat and that she was unable to save it's life.
