Yar' Adua Has Track Records Of Failure - El-rufai by Mcfeddy(m): 10:02am On Jan 07, 2010
The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has decried the inability of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua’s administration to sanitise the power sector which is largely responsible for the growth and development of the country’s economy, saying the president has a track records of disappointing Nigerians.

In a statement entitled, “Nigeria's Power Failure”, El-Rufai said; "This piece was not written to bemoan the failure of the current political leadership, nor is it about the pronouncements of dodgy lawyers and desperate politicians. It was intended to address the recent setback that the nation has suffered with regards to the failure of the present adminstration to tackle the problems bedeviling the power sector.

According to him, "The present administration had informed Nigerians that they will not be able to meet the 6,000 megawatts of electricity target generation this year.

“It would be recalled that President Yar’Adua had revised former President Obasanjo’s plan of generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity by the end of December 2007, but his adminstration promised to deliver only 6,000 megawatts within 18 months and an additional 11,000mw by 2011”.

The 6,000mw if continuously generated and distributed to about 150 million people will only power a single 60 watts light bulb for about 58 minutes a day without the usage of electronic gadgets, about 23 hours will be spent in darkness.

He also stated that the Federal Government is known for not living up to its promises, saying, "Given President Yar'Adua administration's track record of disappointing Nigerians, it only shows that the latter’s promise of increasing eletricity generation will not be a reality . Few days after the vice-president promised that no Nigerian will use power generators in 2010, the presidency itself proposed spending N542.4 million in the 2010 budget to purchase and fuel its power generating plants.”

The fomer FCT minister disclosed that the Yar’Adua adminstration has done nothing to aggravate the hardship confronting Nigerians, pointing out that the expected gains of democracy which made progress in many areas under the previous administration have been completely stalled.

He said all we have now are empty promises, lofty slogans and continuous threat to citizens who dare to demand for changes.

According to him, "Without adequate power supply Nigeria cannot achieve its potentials,” the statement concluded.

I think it will pay El-Rufai to stick with what he knows and at least show a certain level of consistency.

He worked tirelessly to bring Yar'adua to power not so?

It seems it is now becoming fashionable for Nigerians to insult and make all sorts of ridiculous comments about Nigeria once they are outside Nigeria.

How did he arrive at the 58 minutes on 60W bulb for Nigerians if steady 6000W is made available? What yardstick was used here?

However, one point that can be made especially in the area of energy efficiency that our government is neglecting is that the time will increase by 12 if the 60W bulbs are replaced with 5W energy saving bulbs and that would be like 12 hours a day assuming we believe his calculation that I know is flawed to begin with.

that calculation is crap!

Even now that we dont have that generation capacity, it is not that bad. Nigerians waste energy so much but even at that it hasnt gotten close to el rufai's calculation.
