There is no doubt that both the iPhone 7 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 are the best phones available in the market.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is officially the best smartphone currently available, but how does it compare to Apple’s latest handset. There’s really a lot of competition out there right now for your next smartphone upgrade and Samsung Galaxy S8 is designed as a direct rival to the iPhone7.
Now here is the question. Which is really better? Galaxy S8 or iPhone 7? How does Samsung’s best stand against Apple’s flagship from seven months ago.
Design
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a glass back and metal frame, with glass on both sides gently curving to give it a symmetrical look and make it comfortable to hold in the hand.
The iPhone 7 has a quite different but similarly premium design, with a metal unibody that’s slim and compact at 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1mm, while the S8 is 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm. That makes iPhone7 a bit smaller but still easy to hold in the hand.
The S8 is IP68 certified making it slightly more water resistant than the IP67 certified iPhone7.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with a 3.5mm head phone jack so you can use a wired headset with the phone, you won’t get that with iPhone7.
Screen
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8 inch screen which dwarfs the 4.7inch iPhone7. It’s not just the size that differs, Galaxy S8 uses super AMOLED where the iPhone 7 screen is LCD meaning Samsung phone offers more vivid, high contrast colors.
The Galaxy S8 has an incredible sharp screen, with a resolution of 1440 x 2960 where the iPhone7 is limited to 750 x 1334. S8 also supports HDR content which the iPhone doesn’t support. Samsung’s Flagship also has a different aspect ratio at a very wide screen 18.5:9 with the iPhone more standard 16:9. The screen is one of the biggest differences between the two phones.
OS and Power
The battle lines are drawn between these two phones at this point with the Samsung Galaxy S8 running Android Nougat and iPhone 7 using iOS 10.3. Both phones are tremendously powerful though. iPhone7 has Apple A10 Fusion Chip and 2GB of RAM while Galaxy S8 is confirmed to ship with 4GB of RAM. Samsung Galaxy S8 is rumored to use either a Snapdragon 835 chipset or an Exynos 8895 (both are powerful top-end chips) so we expect silky smooth performance from S8 and Samsung to at least match the iPhone in terms of screen response under the fingers.
Camera
The Samsung S8 camera uses a 12MP sensor with f1.7 apperture. It’s a good setup but might not hold up against the best in 2017. iPhone7 also uses 12MP camera and benefits of Optixcal Image Stabilization, which the Samsung Galaxy S8 also has.
Samsung S8 has a slightly higher front camera of 8MP compared to iPhone7’s 7MP.
Battery
Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 3000mAh battery which is a lot more bigger than iPhone 7’s 1960mAh battery. But then with the S8 higher resolution screen it needs more juice.
We can’t predict exactly how long it will last but iPhone 7 requires daily charging and sometimes doesn’t even make it to bed time so S8has a good chance of going further daily.
S8 also supports fast charging, iPhone 7 can also charge fast but only if you use a 2.1A iPad charger rather than the plug that come with the phone.
Price
Samsung Galaxy S8 costs a lot more than iPhone 7. S8 is going for $729 in the US between N450,000 and N550,000 in Nigeria compared to iPhone 7 $649 in the US between N300,000 and N325,000 in Nigeria on online stores.

While it is clear that Samsung Galaxy S8 is the better phone I think it would be unfair to measure it against iPhone7 which was released last year September but Samsung Galaxy S8 was released May, 2017. That is about 8 months between them, perhaps when the new iPhone (7s, 7s plus or cool is released the competition will be more equal. But for now Samsung Galaxy S8 is the best smartphone available in the market.
Note: Due to market forces beyond our control the prices of these smartphones may change.
