Why Does Naijatechguy Think He Knows Much About Technology? by abubaka101: 9:27am On May 14, 2017
This thread was created in response to NaijaTechGuy's thread that social media is silently ruining our lives: www.nairaland.com/3795920/how-social-media-silently-ruining

I have to say that that was the dumbest thread I have ever seen about technology, especially when it's from an individual claiming to know much about technology.
How myopic can one be to assume that future generations would see our past, filtered, pictures from Instagram and Snapchat and believe it was taken in the 70s?! Isn't the present generation more technologically advanced than the past ones?

And to claim that future historians would have a hard time sifting that from Facebook and the likes because of the volume is data is not completely exponentially stupid, but is thoroughly ignorant!
Obviously NaijaTechGuy has not heard of data science specialisations like Big data and Machine learning algorithms.
FYI, I am a trained historian and also a programmer.
How do you think that linkedin, Facebook and google are able to give you relevant information despite the voluminous amount if data in their warehouses? They use big data analytics tools and algorithms to do that.
And right now these ideas are being borrowed into other disciplines. Historians now use sophisticated tools to analyze data dating back centuries.
So please NaijaTechGuy do your research before you post your articles. And if you can't/don't understand the field enough, outsource the writings to others abeg.
That's all!

I must applaud you for dedicating a thread to me. Gracias. You could have simply dropped a comment on the post rather than wasting time to create this thread. Now I want you to understand something. I never said they'll say pictures taken in 2017 were taken in the 70's. All I said was that it'll be quite difficult explaining to them.

A point I noticed about people that claim to know much about tech without really knowing the basics is that they tend to use unrelated words in a case study.

I never said data machines don't exist. Now Mr Historian, I want to make this clear the current historians don't have to analyze a useless amount of information to get what they want. The sheer amount of useless data on Facebook is too much. You are entitled to your opinion as much as I am to mine.

In situations like this, we both could be right and wrong at the same time, it all depends on the perspective. Now you can delete the thread. Thank you very much.

Quite frankly, I appreciate you coming all the way here to state your point, and in a somewhat civil manner.
I felt it would be better calling you out than to all my comment to get lost in the flood of other comments on that thread. My apologies if the title seems a bit harsh.
But I am not tackling your post on only what you said, and if you check my own post, you'll see that it is the things that you did not state that is also truly a problem.
You never made any mentioning about data science and how it is helping to crunch and analyse seemingly "useless data". Even a lot of facebook data that you are considering "useless" can and are proving valuable in some aspects. It's just like how some persons think of archaeological artifacts, but yet they're useful. Mind you, social media data is not restricted to the number of likes, followers, or views on images or videos. The data is quite complex, sometimes they just gathered unstructured data for unrelated analytical purposes.
(By the way, what's a data machine? Because data is now more efficiently computed in a platform/hardware independent environment. So what you did you mean by that? )

And your point about filtered images and how difficult it would be trying to explain it to the next generation is actually misunderstood. And you know it. Technology is more forward compatible than it is backward compatible. The younger generations and the generations to come will be more sophisticated than our present one. So it won't be difficult explaining anything to them.

And this is not an attempt to bash you, as you actually do know a lot. But we all need to be told when we're wrong in some times.

That's my take.

op, Honestly speaking, Naijatechguy's article is so true as even Albert Einstein some thing similar in that regard, More of technology cripples intellectualism. Akin to what Naijatechguy asserted, Technology induces mental laziness and likely to bring about a future generation of low IQ which we already experiencing in this 21st century.

You are right. But the the future is incremental and sometimes unassuming. The trends we seem to believe will take over may never materialise.
But let me clarify my own post. I did not claim technology will make people dumber or smarter. In fact, I leave that argument to every other person.
My own opinion centred around the technical aspect of his post.

Yes sir, we might not know the future for sure but we can predict it in the context of history.
Your opinion remains valid as it has to do with the acceleration of advancement. True but the brain gets lazy when too many automated machinery replaces manual process assisted by the brain.

#JustPassingBy

Did someone just mention party? Panda hates having parties on Sabbath days.

Well, I'll reserve my comments till the After Party.

And Yeah, this i know " If Social Media was a fundamental quantity, then Facebook would be its S.I Unit."

I am inclined to agree. I had been working on an algorithm for personalization and recommendation, but I got worried by the fact that it had the possibility of re-enforcing the bias and perception of people; not because it should, but because that's the data it gets from the user.
The same dilemma worries Google whenever it hears people talk about its personalization algorithms.
Meanwhile most people won't even realise it. To them everything is normal. They'll be like "Facebook/Google is reading my mind oooo. How do they know know that i hate Buhari that they are giving me Naij articles about how to kill him?"; It's actually because their last five or more posts or likes/searches have been on the same issues. Kinda like the reason why Facebook is finding it difficult with Fake News!
Now Google and Uber are working driverless cars, believing it would help reduce accidents. Meanwhile there are multiple causes if accidents beyond human error. And the economic impact of driverless cars would be extremely higher unemployment rates.
I believe tech should be beneficial to humanity, not destructive. And while some trends seem to be destructive, tech as a force for good will surely triumph.

Mental laziness led to more innovations right?I think it is more of the people being lazy,we all know successful individuals and stories are limited.

Your laziness from another view is a ease

Okay.. Well I tend to be controversial on certain issues, however I accept constructive criticism. It's a good way for me to understand how others view a particular subject. Have a wonderful evening.
