Notice I have worded this question carefully; the question is not CAN Christians drink alcohol, it's SHOULD Christians drink alcohol?

I think an obvious question that would start off this conversation would be; " Did Jesus turn water into alcoholic wine?"
Some people argue that it was not as alcoholic in its content as the wine that is available today. However, this wouldn't matter if you had an abundance of it because there is still need for self control against drunkeness.
So this makes people ask questions such as "why would Jesus create something that could make people sin?"
The answer to this is that Jesus is the giver of all good things.  He fed the massive crowd with an abundance of fish and bread which they could easily have stuffed themselves with past satisfaction  (which would be gluttony and yes it's wrong) but this wouldn't be Jesus' fault.
African Christian culture tends to make wine or alcohol a taboo  but historically speaking, it has not always been like that. It's obvious that from a well intentioned fear, we have got it backwards.

Romans chapter 14 I think gives some of the clearest instructions for this. Everything we do should be done in faith, honouring unto God and loving towards our brothers and sisters.

The issue then becomes, What are the guidelines in general and how should Christians approach this concerning their own personal conviction?

1. (Scripture ref: Romans 14:21) If it causes your brother or sister to stumble;  for instance, someone who has struggled or is struggling with alcohol addiction or abuse. In such a case, don't put an obstacle  in front of them to stumble over.
Are we free to consume alcohol? Yes but we are also free to not consume alcohol.
If you consume alcohol in front of people who are clearly offended by it or are struggling with an addiction to alcohol just so you can say "I'm under grace, not under law", then you've missed the point of your Gospel given freedom.   We are to consider how to use our freedom to uplift out brothers and sisters, not simply for our own selfish gain (Galatians 5:13).

2. If you feel personally convicted to not consume alcohol, particularly if you've experienced deliverance or are starting to experience deliverance from alcohol abuse or addiction, then you should free or even obligated to withdraw from alcohol COMPLETELY (Romans 14:23).

Now of course the bible is clear, VERY clear that Christians should NOT get drunk. There's no bible interpreting gymnastics you can do to make a biblical argument that it's okay or God glorifying for Christians to get drunk or aid or applaud those who do.
In fact, the bible is riddled with many warnings against drinking alcohol. From old testament to new testament, the bible talks about the dangers that alcohol presents to fallen people.  (Proverbs 20:1, 23:30-32). You don't have to be a graduate of theology to see that the bible gives a resounding NO to drunkenness.
God has created all things for our enjoyment and for us to have dominion over it, not it having dominion over us. All of creation has a certain God given goodness about it(1 Timothy 44:5) but it is sin that has twisted and distorted these things. (Romans 1:24, 25) For example, sex is a good thing created by God but it is sinful for humans who twist and use it against God's intended purpose  (within marriage) and use it to satisfy their own personal desires. Alcohol can be seen in the same way. Fermented wine in the old testament  is actually a good thing. The bible says that wine is to gladden the hearts of men (Psalms 104:14, 15, Proverbs 3:16, Joel 11:2, Amos 9:13, 14, Hosea 14:7, John 2:11, John 2:6,7 ).

It is a matter of choice, remember not to drink in excess. Ephicians 5:18.

Deacons should not take much wine. 1tim-3:8.
Aged women should not take much wine-titus-2:3.
Say no to excess wine, 1 peter 4:3.

Even the early church do take holy communion with alchoholic drink not fruit juice as some practice today.1corinthians 11:20-22.
