South West leaders have thrown their weight behind Acting President Yemi Osinbajo as intrigues continued in the presidency following the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently undertaking medical treatment in the United Kingdom for an undisclosed ailment.

Following recent threat by Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Independent gathered that prominent Yoruba leaders have been meeting on the need to jettison their political differences and provide “full support for their son”, the acting president, as he steers the ship of state in Buhari’s absence.

North Threatens

NEF had last week declared that acting President Osinbajo cannot replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 should anything happen to Buhari who has gone for a medical follow-up.

Professor Ango Abdullahi, Chairman of the forum, said should Buhari fail to seek re-election in 2019, the North must retain the presidency by fielding a candidate through the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi said although Osinbajo, according to the constitution, should be allowed to complete the current tenure being Buhari’s deputy, he must not contest in 2019 should Buhari fail to re-contest for a second term.

“The constitutional provision says that in the event that the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated for one reason or the other and cannot perform the duties of his office, he will be succeeded by the vice president.

“But no one is in a position to know at what point he is going to recover fully and come back to office, or whether the unexpected could happen,” he said.

He was adamant that Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019, adding, “If the worst case scenario happens and Buhari is not back on seat, the constitution is very clear that the vice president takes over.

“And what we then expect is that he will take that tenure to its logical end and from there the politics of power sharing will take precedence over anything else.”

He also said “when the unexpected happens in 2019, we will be back to our position that the North should be treated equitably and fairly. And we expect that another northern candidate will emerge as presidential candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Yoruba Unity

Speaking with Independent, a chieftain of Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF) said while they believe in Nigeria, they will resist any attempt by the North to make life difficult for Osinbajo.

“We are studying the comments from the North, especially the Northern Elders Forum. We will come together, irrespective of our political divide and deliberate on the way forward soon. That is all I can say for now”.

Afenifere through its spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, who said the Northern Elders are making empty noise, noted that everybody irrespective of his tribe, religion or political divide must be subjected to the laid down rules of the Nigerian constitution.

“It is not about being a Yoruba man. That is what the constitution says. The constitution says if the office of the president becomes vacant, the vice president steps in. Although, we are praying for the recovery of the president but we see most of the noise being made by the Northern elders as empty noise that has nothing to do with the constitution of Nigeria. So, they are free to make their noise. Comments are free but there is a laid down constitutional procedure and that must be followed through and through if they want the Nigerian constitution to be binding on the Nigerian people”, he said.

Coup Dangerous

In a related development, former Minister of Transport, Ebenever Babatope and a former governor of Kaduna State, Balarabe Musa, have both warned against the danger of coup plot.

Speaking on the advice by the Chief of Army Staff warning army officers to beware of politicians and refrain from being used by them, Babatope said anyone planning a coup in the country will destroy himself.

“In any case, if anybody wants to do a coup, let him go ahead. Such a person will only destroy himself and the country”.

Musa on his part said, “It is unfortunate that this is the situation we find ourselves in. We don’t want anything that will plunge Nigeria into chaos now”.

If Buhari were to be from the South West and Osinbajo from the North West, power would have changed hands since.

Even if Buhari is dead, the North I know will hide the fact and support the corpse till 2019.
