Carmal90: Yes, he's correct. 13% of N10 Million in a year is N1.3 Million. And since we are talking of 90 days here, you divide 1.3 million by 4. That gives you roughly 400k. *Modified It's actually 325k. So, 400k is actually wrong. 1 Like |

Look for a sound microfinance bank and invest it. They can give you up to 21% for shorter periods. But make sure it's a sound bank with history so that your money no go loss. 1 Like |

Is the treasury bill rate a function of the amount invested or not? Meaning will someone who invests N1,000,000 in treasury bills enjoy the same rate as somone who invests N10,000,000? 3 Likes |

Re: Fixed Deposit Vs Treasury Bills: Which Pays Better? by Tinyemeka(m): 9:24pm On May 27, 2017 |
bizhop01: 13.9% of N10m is N1,390,000, which is approximately the interest to be earned in 1 yr. 90 days is almost a quarter of a year and the interest should therefore be approximately N347,500. There are some fees to be paid (Treasury custodian, Mgt, etc) which in total may not be up to N5k. Treasury bills earn way higher interests than FD. Downside is that the lowest tenor is 90 days, unlike 30 days for FD. However, you can trade your unmatured TB in the secondary market in the event of emergency cash need. Slightly lower rate. TBs are not subject to withholding tax. FDs are. P.S. The CBN in April raised the minimum investable amount for TB to N50m. But you can still approach your bank for much lower amounts. You can still invest. 3 Likes |
Re: Fixed Deposit Vs Treasury Bills: Which Pays Better? by Tinyemeka(m): 9:37pm On May 27, 2017 |
Electroweb: The TB rate is not a function of the amount but rather (in most simplest terms) the lowest rate offered by a bidder in the primary market auction. Auctions are held Wednesday every 2 weeks. The last pry mkt auction held 17.5.17 so the next auction is 31.5.17. Interested bidders should have submitted their bids before the auction date through their banks. You may bid at your discretionary rate or ask the bank to bid for you at it's selected rate. Bids are done for 91, 182 and 364 day tenors. Higher tenors command higher stop rates. Like I said earlier, amount does not determine the stop rate, the lowest bidder in whichever tranche does. 2 Likes |
