If you have a passion for baking pastries and other food types then maybe you should start thinking of turning this passion into a money-making business. In this article, you will find out how you can start your baking business in Nigeria. What you need to get started isn't as much as you would think. As long as you're very good at it, there are step by step instructions that will guide you to start this business.

A lot of people connote baking to just bread only but that's not so. An bakery business will produce bread, chin-chin, cake, pastries and other baked food items. Your choice of products should be determined by the market you want to service. You should ask yourself this question. Do you want to focus on commercial production of bread, for instance or do you prefer baking products based on custom request from clients. You would need a product type to focus on and once you have this, the next plans will focus on creating and marketing this product/products. Check the following tips for more guidance.

a.) Pick a brand name that suits your business. It should be something that suits the personality you want to create for your business. It must relate to your service offer and should be unique. You can't use a name that's already in use. Choose something very unique. You can last have a logo done for you. It's unbelievable how much difference these things make in a business. Your brand name when powerful enough can affect public perception of your business. Pick wisely.

b.) Write a thorough business plan about your business structure. Is it going to be solely owned by you or are you partnering with someone? How do you plan to manage the business? Who's your competition and what are they are doing? Where and how do you plan to source funds from? Which equipment do you need? Who will you sell to? What's the future plan of the business? Answers to these questions should be contained in the business plan you draw up and will guide you accordingly.

c.) Pick a suitable location for your business. It will benefit your business greatly if it's in a location where there are a lot of workers or a school. Getting customers easily in such a location will come easily, top it off with an awesome product with good packaging and sales would pour in.

d.) Get adequate regulatory sanctions for your business operations. Whether you go for a membership with the Bakers Association or you register with NAFDAC, it is important your business is covered by a regulatory body to be on the safe side. This will give you greater confidence to run your business without restrictions of any sort.

e.) Develop and determine the equipment and utensils you will need as well as how to go about getting them. The type of products you plan to sell will determine the equipment you will need. Agreed, some of them might be costly for a starter but you can buy those you can easily afford then hire/rent those you can't till you make enough money to acquire them. Ovens, blenders, mixers, bowls, spoons, knives, tables, display cases and others.

f.) Determine your products, pricing and cost of production. Which products are you focusing on? Cake, chin-chin, buns, donuts, bread, meat-pie? Choose your product then fix a price for each with regards to the cost of production and the pricing of your competitors. Don't charge higher than them and your strong selling point should be quality products and excellent and professional service delivery. Also, when purchasing raw materials, it's better to buy in bulk rather than in piecemeal. It will save you money and time any way you look at it. Once you locate a good supplier, the advantage of buying in bulk will be clearer to you.

g.) Decorate, design and brand your business location. The way you decorate and design your location will affect your business irrespective of how awesome your products are. Sooner or later, the effect will be obvious. Your baking business should have a personality and this should be reflected in your location. You can get the services of professionals to give you a simple but interesting look that suits your business. Your clients' will also appreciate this. Nobody would really enjoy a bland or dingy atmosphere with little or no life.

h.) Create awareness, launch and market your product. Now your bakery business is almost ready to launch, this is the time to create awareness and make your business known to people even before your products are ready. Make calls, talk to people in your network both social and real life, about your new venture. Promote on your timeline in social media. Share business cards and flyers to specific targets. Do cold calls and visit office areas to sensitize them your service. You can handle snacks for office meetings, luncheons and the likes. Employ ever means possible to market your business.
On launch day, open with a celebration of some sort, invite friends and family and tell them to come with their circle of friends too. Give away free baked food. This will create a memorable public impression and perception of your business. If done correctly and all things being equal, your baking business should be off to a good start after your launch.

Any questions and comments on the topic would be most welcome. Enjoy!
