Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in a special democracy day message has urged Nigerians to be patient with the Muhammadu Buhari administration but also take advantage of democracy which allows citizens to keep electing better leaders.

A statement by his media office read, ''Former vice-president and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar congratulates Nigerians of all political persuasions on the occasion of this years’ Democracy Day, which coincides with the second anniversary of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.

“The Turakin Adamawa says that Nigerians should be proud of themselves for doing away with military governments in 1999, in favour of democracy, which the world over, gives voice and a sense of belonging to more people in society.

“He counsels all those who may be contemplating alternatives to perish such thoughts as the worst form of democratic rule has been adjudged far better than the best form of military dictatorship.

“Among the virtues of democracy, aside public discussion, is the culture of patience with the leadership which informs that once an election has taken place, and a leader is elected, the populace has to be patient with the leader until he completes his tenure. The implication of this, says the Turaki, is that a democratic system imbues the people with political wisdom, to improve on their mode of selection of leaders with each election that takes place.”

''The best guarantee for the peace, progress and development of plural societies like Nigeria, and even homogeneous entities, is democracy because popular political participation and inclusiveness in government helps to develop patriotism in the citizenry and this galvanises the best endeavours of the people for the development of the society.”

“Noting that the beauty of democracy is the opportunity it gives to the people to elect their leaders, the former Vice President acknowledges the improvements in the electoral processes over the years since 1999 and calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission not to rest on its oars in making credible and transparent elections possible in the country,” the statement added.

“While wishing the government and people the best of this period, which coincides with the second anniversary of this administration, and the days ahead, the former vice president and recipient of the ‘Hero of Nigeria Democracy’ award, urges Nigerians to pray for the quick recovery and safe return of President Muhammadu Buhari to continue with the work of entrenching democracy and development in the country.”

Buhari is officially two years in office and the only capital project his govt fully initiated and completed is the helipad he built for the landing of his helicopter whenever he is in his village in Daura.

Of course he knew the colossal failure of a president but he went ahead to turnover his campaign structure to him helping to foster him on us.A fact is that both Buhari & Atiku are failed leaders.

"elect better leaders next time" is he trying to say Buhari is a failure. If that is what he is actually implying then he is part of the failure. Instead of this man to rule these country, letz kuku go back to military era.

He's already a patient

2 years in office and 2 more years to do

He was the president of Nigeria from 1983 - 1985 after a coup he masterminded (and he had the audacity to lock Nnamdi Kanu up for doing nothing)

Just mention 2 things Buhari has accomplished in his life and i will delete my Nairaland account

Nigerian leaders are bunch of jokes

Okay we don hear Turaki. But be it known to you that neither you nor Buhari was the best APC could field in 2015 or in any distant/near future.

Why will you (Atikus & Buharis) be the ones to make decisions for me and younger generation when the chances of you still being around in 20-30 yrs are very slim?

I crave for a time when a younger, intelligent, charismatic and honest nationalist will become the president of Nigeria. I mean individuals like Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode.

So Bubu can not address Nigeria today? I think it is obvious that Bubu is incapacitated and impeachment procedure is the right step to take.
