Historical context: Every verse in the Qur’an has his“asbab an-nuzul” which means “occasion of revelation” . There was always an occasion, a reason for a verse to be revealed. A verse was always revealed in the context of certain circumstances/problems. In this case the verse was revealed during the conflict between the early Muslims and the Banu Quraisch, the “idolaters” of Mecca. So it’s a context of warfare.

Text context: The context of the whole Qur’an in general and the certain Sura in particular. Let’s take a look at other verses in Sura 9. Just look at the verses before and after verse 5. Verse 4 and 6:

“Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty, and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term. God loves the righteous.”

“And if anyone of the polytheists asks you for protection, give him protection so that he may hear the Word of God; then escort him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.”

That is the real Islam not the ones that blow mosques, kill children or kill their Muslims

They trade, practice their religion, and they are protected by the Muslim Army. Just like any political entity around the world, all they have to do is pay their tax called Jizya but before running to conclusion Muslims also pay tax called Zakkah. Non Muslims joined the Islamic army as mercenaries they are going to be paid but won't be entitled to war boots. Now Islamic countries restricting non Muslims is their political affair not Islam.
