Bauchi—THE member representing Dass constituency in Bauchi State, Maryam Bagel, has called for street begging school system by children (Amaljiri) to be abolished, saying the system is a major cause of backwardness in the North-East.


The lawmaker spoke, yesterday, during the celebration of the Day of the African Child by Bauchi State Television Authority, BATV, in collaboration with UNICEF.

She said: “Many stakeholders in the North-East are shying away from the negative implications of the Almajiri system due to political motives.

“Those days, young men who were interested in acquiring knowledge travelled to places like Sokoto, Maiduguri.

“Now we have Islamic teachers almost in every neighbourhood. So the essence of the Almajiri system is now defeated.”

She was right. Almajiri system of today is a senseless system.

But I think those leaders that started almajiri system did so with good and honest intention to enable even children of poor villagers got educated.

But the successive "leaders" failed to improve the system.

Today "leaders" in the north are emphatically bad "leaders. "Leaders" without any sense of responsibility.

One think I like about this people (Northerners) is that they don't blame others for their Problem.

They are Identifying their problem and talking about probable solutions.

Unlike some people who Think Ewedu and Amala eaters are their problem and that Towo eaters are their enemies.

Basic problem with the North is its resources.

Since independence, the North has been resource dependent. In other words, the North sold groundnuts, cotton, etc, and shared the money. As a result...why invest in education, since you get the money anyway. Just educate a few people to keep things running...

Nowadays, they rely on oil. And in the NE they are looking for oil.

The problem with the North...I mean the far North...is that they haven't yet grasped how vital education is for their development.One way this our resource curse affects us is that so long as the money flows in, why should we waste time learning book? (It affects the South differently...ie the South too remains underdeveloped but that is not the point here).

I guess that one advantage of resource control is that it might awaken the North to the importance of education, and they may invest more in education once they grasp, like Korea and Japan did...that it is that important to their developing. But...it may, on the other hand, lead them to fight other regions for more proceeds of resources (See the 'Oil belongs to all of us' chatter).

So long as the North East does not grasp how important education is for development...nothing is going to change. Look at Saudi Arabia....rich oil producing nation, yet, still, doesn't have enough educated people to run things....so they have to bring in foreigners....WHICH is easy because...them got the oil.

Well said. All these societal creations have been hijacked and transformed into tools for political actualization.

Politicians don't believe in democracy. They pretend they do but fight against its principles when it can no longer server their interest.

Religion, Tribalism, Ethnicism, Autocracy, Militocracy, Authoritarian, Almajari, Agbero, etc Whichever it is, you are sure to find politicians wining and tuning the fabric of the society in their favour.
