Randyhot: Truth be told, i was in okija shrine in the middle of may 2014 to seek for spiritual means in bringing my thieving lanlord to justice back then when i was in school. It happens that when we went on break one semester , my landlord who was a drug addict colluded with some unscrupulous individuals to break into our room and looted everything on sight, I and my roomate wanted to hurt him so badly when we discovered the theft and we knew that if we had invited the police he would have bailed himself and case closed. We sought revenge in the dreaded forest of okija in the shrine belonging to one of the most dreaded of their chief priests, known as okala madu okala mmuo, alusi na eje uka ( half human half spirit, the deity that goes to church). When we where ushered into his living room, he took a particular liking to us and promised to help us out. The name of his shrine then is Ogwugwu akpu in Umuhu village okija. This chief priest, a man in his middle age, directly one of his erand boys to take us into the forest to pay homage to the deity , an act known in their parlance as " ije kenee agbo" ( to salute agbo). On our way we encountered some bare breasted women, some as old as 6o- 70 , including youths and other men, this women i later learnt were tasked with keeping the shrine tidy and neat at all times, cooking etc. We were led into a thick forest with tall trees untill we came to a clearing that is the threshold of the shrine, then our escort warned us that once we enter this deity court, it is forbidden to spit out saliva, to show any sign of fear or repulse or to bump into eachother as we are expected to walk in a single file from then on. As i entered the larger expanse of clearing that served as this deity court, i was greeted left to right with corpses in diffrent form of decomposition and in their caskets, few of them were just skeletons in clothes that had now become rags with undergrowth of weeds and grasses in them. ( in all these they dont stink or smell) I was led to the 'isi ogwugwu" ( where the shrine was situated) and what i saw marveld me, springing from the ground upwards where two stout stump of trees giving the appearance of a horn, and coverd in blood of animals and feathers of birds, scatterd around the dias (alter) where money in diffrent currencies and denominations, pictures of people, more blood and fetish objects. I was commanded to make an offering of any amount of my choice, but first i have to whirl it around my head three times before dropping it, this i did with a 200 naira note. When we left , the chief priest offered us calypso liqueur which we drank lavishly back in his living room, we discussed at lenght about the case and he promised to begin the rituals immidiately. He charged us 25k of which we payed 15k there and then promising to come back with the balance, he now gave us a letter of summon to hand over to the lanlord inviting him to the shrine to defend himself or pay for his crimes as the case maybe. Realy the lanlord was jolted and heavily troubled when he was handed over the letter, he invited family and friends to settle the matter, ( by then we have started making arrangements for another accomodation elsewhere ), we payed them lip service and insisted that he answered the summoned. Few weeks later, this chief priest started calling us for the remaining of his balance as the spirits are no longer comfortable with the money owed them. There is where the problem is , we dont have any more money to spend again., we are broke. He started threatening us and warning us of the dangers of toying with a deity as dreaded as Ogwugwu Akpu. But we begged him to intercede with the spirits on our behalf and give us more time. We where still debating on this when the police struck . Although i regret my actions then, i was led by youthful exuberance and the hunger for revenge.

Ogwugwu akpu Okija The ultimate checks and balance we had then. Go against anything you swear before it and you are gone. That was why Andy Uba dragged Ngige to the shrine to swear he was going to leave govt house for him. But Ngige survived even after defying. if your corpse is not brought before it when it kills you, it is believed that your generations will follow suit The fear of Ogwugwu then was the reason a lot couldn't cheat an Okija person.
