Yorubas are the movers and shakers of Nollywood

Amazing! Nigerian Movies Gross over N1 billion in 2016

Here’s how 2016’s Top 10 Chart looks like for Nigeria – Please note that not all the figures are verified rather we have used Filmhouse Cinema’s weighted average market share to come up with box office estimates for films not released by FilmOne.

The Wedding Party – FilmOne Nollywood – Over N500 million - Yoruba Producer
A Trip to Jamaica – FilmOne Nollywood – N178.5 million - Yoruba Producer

Batman Vs Superman – Warner/Crimson – N140 million (Estimated)
Captain America – Marvel/Disney/Crimson – N119 million (Estimated)
Suicide Squad – Warner/Crimson – N116 million (Estimated)
London Has Fallen – Independent/Okhma – N90 million (Estimated)
Doctor Strange – Marvel/Disney/Crimson – N85 million (Estimated)
Gods of Eqypt – Independent/Okhma – N80 million (Estimated)
Mechanic Ressurection – Independent/Okhma – N75 million (Estimated)
76 – Silverbird Nollywood – N72 million (Estimated)

From AY Makun‘s “30 Days in Atlanta”, Ebonylife‘s “Fifty”, Omoni Oboli‘s “Wives on Strike” to Kunle Afolayan‘s “The CEO”, and now “A Trip to Jamaica”, “The Wedding Party”, “93 Days”, “76” and many more, it is clear that the Nigerian movie industry has the potential to rake in billions of dollars in revenue.

The Wedding Party, Nigeria’s latest blockbuster movie, has broken box-office records at every milestone since it was released nationwide on December 16 2016. It took just two weeks to eclipse the record of N178 million, held by ‘A Trip to Jamaica’, emerging with a staggering N200 million before the New Year weekend was over. Both films led a strong lineup of popular Nigerian films in 2016, including ‘Wives on Strike’, ‘The CEO’, ‘93 Days’ and ‘76’.

The Wedding Party debuted with the biggest opening weekend in Nollywood history with N36 million; the best-ever opening week with N66 million; the biggest week ever with N110 million; and a jaw-dropping Christmas box-office total of N146 million.

neoOduduwa:
I've been eyeing the entertainment industry and our grip on it is pretty solid. We are going to show potopoto slaves how it's done, we Omoluabis back our claims with facts

Movie Industry

First of all let's clear the air about who started Nollywood and who it belongs to. I will keep saying it that Omoluabis are humble achievers who don't make noise about their success unlike some uncultured arrogant fools who always tune their volume knob to Max whenever they make little precedented achievements. Claiming that we pioneered Nollywood would be arrogant and that would put us at the same level with them. So, basically, I'm just going to debunk their ridiculous claims to owning Nollywood.

Ibos are always quick to cite Chika Okpala and his crew who made waves in the 1980s with their sitcom on NTA titled "The New Masquerade" as the pioneers of Nollywood, But can one really conclude that they're the pioneers because of the TV broadcast? Can anyone account for the roots of the modern Hollywood industry without mentioning the hardworking peripatetic actors who moved around in caravans when acting was still in it's latency in the old America?

Where was Chika Okpala when Hubert Ogunde was entertaining the country. Na who dash monkey banana? Hubert Ogunde was already performing in the 1940s and Chika Okpala was actually born in 1950 grin It's a disrespect to the man's honor to disregard theatres and folk operas as the initial platforms of Nollywood.

Hubert Ogunde's plays include The Garden Of Eden, Worse Than Crime, Black Forest, The Tiger's Empire, Strike and Hunger, Bread and Bullet, Yorùbá Ronu, Ija Ominira, Africa and God, Israel In Egypt, Nebuchadnezzar's Reign, My Darling Fatima, Portmanteau Woman, Beggar's Love, Princess Jaja, Ajani Ogun, Aiye and many more . Hubert Ogunde wasn't the only Yorùbá man in the scene as his contemporaries include the likes of A. B David, P. A Dawodu, Layeni and G. T Onimole.

Also, let's not forget that Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) came into action during the 1960s and enabled Ogunde an avenue to reach his audience without traveling. He produced his plays : Ayanmo and Mama Eko for the television audience. How is it now possible to compare Ogunde whose plays were broadcasted on TV in the 1960s to one Chika Okpala who came later in the 1980s?

Notable Yorùbá directors back then include G. B Kuyinu, Ola Balogun, Duro Ladipo and so on. Ogunde is also to be credited for actresses being paid in the industry. He brought professionalism into the practice and enabled women become professionals in light of their own right. Notable actresses back then include Beatrice Oyede, Abike Taiwo, Idowu Phillips (Popularly known as Mama Rainbow) and so on.

At this point, I hope I've been able to clarify who the real pioneers of Nollywood are. Fast forward to 2017, we still have potopoto slaves claiming they actually "own" Nollywood. Let's go through the list of highest-grossing Nigerian films

1. The Wedding Party - 453 million naira - Produced by Mosunmola Abudu and Directed by Kemi Adetiba

2. A Trip To Jamaica - 178.5 million naira - Produced by Ayo Makun

3. 30 Days In Atlanta - 137.2 million naira - Produced by Ayo Makun

4. Fifty - 94 million naira - Produced by Mosunmola Abudu (EbonyLife TV) and Directed by Biyi Bandele

5. Half Of A Yellow Sun - 60 million naira - Directed by Biyi Bandele

6. October 1 - 60 million naira - Produced and Directed by Kunle Afolayan

7. The CEO - 60 million naira - Produced and Directed by Kunle Afolayan

8. The Return Of Jenifa - 35 million naira - Produced by Funke Akindele and Directed by Muhydeen S. Ayinde

9. The Figurine - 30 million naira - Produced and Directed by Kunle Afolayan

10. Weekend Getaway - 22.8 million naira - Directed by Desmond Oluwashola Elliot

11. Phone Swap - 20.7 million - Produced and Directed by Kunle Afolayan

12. The Visit - 14 million naira - Directed by Olufunke Fafoyin

13. Dazzling Mirage - 13 million naira - Produced and Directed by Tunde Kelani

14. Maami - 11.9 million naira - Produced and Directed by Tunde Kelani

15. In The Cupboard - 10.5 million naira - Produced and Directed by Desmond Oluwashola Elliot

16. Married But Living Single - 9.9 million naira - Directed by Tunde Olaoye

17. Out Of Luck - 9 million naira - Directed by Niki Akinmolayan

18. Irapada - 5 million naira - Produced and Directed by Kunle Afolayan

Note : The domestic gross of the movies above were produced by wikipedia.org, at no point in the post did I attempt to tamper with the records nor round any number up. Also, it's important to understand that the figures above were not adjusted by inflation. Every domestic gross stated above is the same as the number value which gives a glib and superficial analysis. For example, Kunle Afolayan's Irapada which generated 5 million naira in 2006 would have generated folds of it were to be released in 2017.

We don't need to make noise with these people, they're nerdy white boys trying to get into a dick-measuring contest with a Mandingo grin

We kinda are. It's a gradual process.

Yoruba movies are the most sough after native language movies. If you haven't noticed, they've MATURED in terms of script, settings, subtitles et al. Go on Youtube, Yoruba movies have some of the highest viewership.

Tunji Balogun, the Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer, Brian Integrated Systems, has been a key player in the Nigerian IT scene for more than a decade. He had initially set up Balog Technologies in the 90s, in a small outlet in Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos. wink

By establishing a reputation for quality and reliability, his firm quickly grew to become one of the leading wholesale stockists and re-sellers of branded computer hardware systems and accessories in the market. Today, he has a subsidiary known as Brian Integrated Systems, that assembles tablets, desktops and laptops within Nigeria. undecided

His motorized conveyor driven assembling plant has a production capacity of 200 devices per day. He is partnering with the government on a PC Ownership Scheme that would not only put PCs in the hands of the students, but will also create thousands of jobs in the country for lots of Nigerians that would be involved in the manufacture of these computers. cheesy

It has been recorded that Brian Systems was the very first to run the Intel pinless 775 processors, and also the first to run Intel Dual Processor motherboards at their entrance into the Nigerian IT market. http://brianintegratedsystems.com/about/

In his response, Balogun assured the Minister that Brian Integrated Systems promoted by Balog Technologies would increase capacity so as to meet up with the capacity building project of the government, that will put digital tools in the hands of students for the challenges of 21st century society. According to Balogun who is also the President of Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria, (CAPDAN), "We have the capacity to partner with the federal government on this laudable initiative. Our products including Brian Platinum Laptop, Brian Gold Laptop, Brian Classmate PC and Brian Platinum Desktop among others, have the state-of-art-technology to support the students PC ownership scheme."

Brian Integrated Systems Limited, one of Nigeria's certified indigenous system builders has announced it readiness to unveil its tablet phones.

Mr. Tunji Balogun, managing director and chief executive officer of the Company told Nigeria Communications Week, that Brian has been monitoring the market, and has discovered that very soon laptops and desktops will be replaced by touch button and touch screen phones.

“So, we do not wish to be left behind. Our tab is a bit different and higher than what is obtainable in the market today. Some of them come in wireless form with USB provision. Most tabs in the market now do not have USB spaces and that limits the user who cannot pair an additional device or his personal software, with the tab”, he said.

Nodding in agreement, Olaide Balogun, Managing Director, Balog Technologies, the driver of the project - described the tablet as one that will give foreign brands a run for their money; hence the features are user-friendly and related to Nigerian environment.

She said: “Our Company is a forward looking one and with the current trend; people are now looking forward to touch-centric communication (phones) gadgets. That actually spurred us to move into invention of tablet. It’s a 4.1” tablet with clear camera dimension. On a special note, it has USB some popular brands do not have. That has been a limitation to the end-user, but we are cutting off that barrier. “The tablet is light weight, portable and various colours. It also has WiFi-3G, so no limitation; the user will always be on the go,” she said giving a brief description of the tab. http://nigeriacommunicationsweek.com.ng/telecom/brian-computer-to-unveil-own-tablet-phones

Hehehe... you dey mind those guys across the Niger? cheesy Even the N-power tablets & laptops they were flaunting (as if Zinox had the sole right to supply those products), is already being supplied to the govt by Brian Systems! wink

The N-Power programme is an ambitious project of the President Muhammadu Buhari government which hopes to buy 500,000 computers for the 500,000 unemployed graduates it is about to recruit and deploy to schools and other sectors. The Office for Nigerian Content in ICT as well as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) have voiced their preference for the patronage of local computer manufacturers in the course of executing the project, arguing that it would not only arrest capital flight but also help to create jobs within the country.

Impeccable presidency sources said three firms namely: Brian Systems, Zinox and Softcom, had been shortlisted in the bid process. http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/08/30/n-power-nigerian-ict-firms-decry-alleged-non-patronage-local-products/

Tempohousing Nigeria (THN) is a leading Nigeria based project developer, specializing in the design and manufacture of building structures, using standard ISO shipping containers. It has leveraged decades of technology pioneered abroad, and tailored it to meet the housing crisis in Nigeria and West Africa. wink

Their unique construction system, makes it possible to quickly construct and transport their container structures, to any location. Their prefabricated buildings are designed using a template, that incorporates container sizes that come in the following ISO standards: 8 ft (2,4 m) wide, 40 ft long (12 m) and 8’6” high (2,6 m). There are a few variations in size: e.g. higher units of 9’6” (“high cube”) and longer units measuring 45 ft (13,5m) and for some – not European – markets 53 ft (16 m).

Their buildings stand out in terms of quality and delivery. The structures are imported from foreign countries and cut offsite, using a lot of skill and ingenuity. It takes them about 6-8 weeks, to build a fully finished duplex from scratch using these containers.

Their prefabricated buildings can be used as homes, shops, offices, ATM kiosks, showrooms etc., and can be stacked, fully laden, up to 9-stories high, providing structural strength. They are also insulated from external noise or sound transmission, and insulated to prevent external cold or heat from being transmitted through the walls, ceiling and floor into the interior parts of the building, so that an ambient temperature of 21 degrees Celsius can be maintained. undecided Each one is built with fully fitted wiring, plumbing and even burglary-proof frames.

Their clients include John Deere, Exxon Mobil, Cardinal Stone, TATA the Indian automobile manufacturer, Stanbic IBTC, Georges Medical Centre etc. The outfit is run by three whizkids - Dele Ijaiya-Oladipo, David Aderounmu and Arc. Solomon Oluwaseyi. cheesy

Agreed

Same way Hausas have their own distinctive Kannywood and still represent Nigeria

But the subject is about Ibos not owning Nollywood, "leaving" it for them would actually mean conceding that they own it

If anything, we're actually the pioneers of Nollywood and they should leave it for us.
