Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has claimed that the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan reversed electricity tariff to get votes from Nigerians during the 2015 Presidential elections.

Speaking at a public lecture organised by the department of Economics, University of Lagos, on Thursday, the former governor of the state insisted that the privatization of the power sector was deceptive.

Fashola maintained that the reduction of electricity tariff by the past administration created “massive debt” for Nigeria as it did not conform to the realities of the country’s economy.

He said, “While I fully support privatisation, I believe what took place in 2013 in the heat of politics was a privatisation that was well intentioned since 2005 but delivered with some deception in 2013 with the expectation of political profit.

“It led many uninformed Nigerians to believe that once the privatisation was concluded, the assets sold to the distribution companies (DisCos) and the Generation companies (GenCos) there was immediately going to be power. I cautioned then that people’s expectations were being unduly raised without telling them that there was a lot of work to do.

“Government must also not interfere with the power of the regulator when it fixes tariff in the way the last administration ordered a reversal of tariff in order to win electoral votes in 2014.

“It created a massive debt for Nigeria, because while the government ordered a reversal of tariff, it did not reduce exchange rate, interest rate, cost of wages or cost of gas and other inputs necessary to produce power. Why should Nigeria carry a debt created by an individual’s electoral ambition? This is what the Buhari administration has to contend with.”

You are being economic with the truth Sir ... First and foremost you have not told us what Fashola did with the proceeds for the recent 50 percent increase..

You claim that no investment has been made in power in the last 20 years but we witnessed Obasanjo spend a whooping 16 billion dollars on about 8 power plants , we all know that the Jonathan govt made greater but more quiet effort in building another 8 more many of which Fashola is dependent on right now to increase power generation..

Can you name one single power project that has been initiated by this govt ?
1) Fashola did nothing with the money, because the government doesn't collect money, the private companies do and what they do with is not something Fashola can regulate.
2) GEJ did not build any power plants, he only completed what OBJ started. Also remember, a lot of the ones OBJ built don't have gas reaching them so for now, they are useless.
3) I'm pretty sure this government claims to have increased the transmission capacity from 5k MW to about 7k5 MW( not sure of the right thing).
4) I didn't say in the last 20 years, i said for close to 20 years (try understanding simple English before trying to understand complex power issues.)

definitely you will prefer the cheap cost of commodity that does not comply with true economy than high cost of commodity that goes with true economy. The problem most of you guys were having is basically lack of understanding simple comprehension, lack of macro economy and possible simptom of likeness for a particular person e.g Jonathan. How could a reasonable leader reduce the tariff of electricity purposely to gain power and you think it will not bounce back on economy and affect the supply of power? If you are asked now what course you study in school, is likely you tell us that you study economics or accountancy, banking or probably engineering. So, if you are selling akara and Becuase you want to gain more customers you reduce the price of your akara without taking other costs into consideration what do you think will happen to your income at the end of the day when the price of beans and groudnut oil is not reduce? It at all you are able to reduce and gain more customers won't you later increase the price after your customer have known your product to meet up with other cost of production and profit realise from sale? Also, the man said the process in selling the power industry to private company is not ideal which everybody is aware of it before as is another factor affecting the power supply. You people should know that this present govt is trying to clear most of the atrocity caused by jonathan govt in the past. And for your information things are getting better day by day as recession is leaving this country soon. The prices of goods are reducing. The numbers of constructed roads are increasing. Power onits own is improving. Our agricultural output is improving far than before etc.
As I hurriedly read through your comment, I have no doubt you are one of those propaganda agents paid to use your power of conviction to hoodwink the readers into believing that black is white and white is black. I envy you in a way because you have a job and I will probably do exactly or better than what you are doing were I in your shoes. Right now, am independent and so can see things clearly and say things as there are.
Those your grammar on micro and macro economics can only make sense to the alimanjiri in their various mosques. They will believe and accept everything as long as it serves Buhari's cause. Well, am not in that school of thought. Am a realist and say things as the are. And I can tell all objective thinkers that Nigeria found itself in this pitiable state since the emergence of Buhari. He promised to improve Nigeria better than he met it.
First he said Nigeria will be better if fuel subsidy is removed. Nigerians gave him the go ahead. We are hoping this will put more money in the state purse. Rather, he is still borrowing. Upon that, exchange rate is like live coals in the palm.
Abeg guy, don't let me recall how I use to buy a rubber of garri for 200 naira which is now selling at 1000 naira, yet my salary has not been increased.
Go and think of other proper devices for marketing your paymasters. This method of blaming Jonathan policies is now archaic.

I am pretty sure Fashola had no hand in selling to the owners of the DISCO's so they cant be his "cronies". That being said, Fashola said the truth but trust Nigerians to be Nigerians and see everything from a political point of view rather than logic.

1) It would take at least 7-10 years for Nigeria to have constant light. The earlier Nigerians accept this, the earlier politicians won't play politics with it.
2) A lack of investment in the power sector for close to 20 years CANNOT be erased in 5 years. Power is capital incentive with very little profit margin (something the investors didn't think about before buying)
3) Gas drives a majority of our power stations and it is priced in dollars while we pay our bills in Naira.

I could go on and on about the problems in the power sector and anybody expecting a miracle is most likely deceiving themselves.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/power-obasanjo-yaradua-jonathan-spent-n2-74trn-in-16-years/ After this much money spent, we are still a long way from stable power. Total installed is about 10k MW, and we need to get to at least 40K MW. Do the maths.
3. so we cannot compute, exchange or afford the dollar rates? how come some persons are able to pay school fees, medical bills and other items "priced in dollars"??
Same reason some people can school abroad while a who lot of Nigerians can't afford private unis.
PS: The average cost of electricity in the UK is N44 kwh while in Nigeria, its about N23 kwh and gas is the same price on the international market.

Why should Nigeria carry a debt created by an individual’s electoral ambition? This is what the Buhari administration has to contend with.”
So after two years fashola is still blaming Jonathan for his ineptitude.Let him resign if the work is too much for him.He is not even talking about sharing pre paid meters. These discos are extorting Nigerians with this their estimated bills and fashola did not see that. After all this increment Fashola cannot guarrantte 24hours of electricity supply.APC is a mistake,2019 is around the corner, continue till then.
