Hi great people of Nairaland,

So i had this little argument with my friends, and they insisted that they'll rather do only traditional wedding than to do a church wedding without reception.

Hmm, I totally disagreed with them, telling them that the cost of reception after church wedding is the main reason why many bachelors are still single today. What is wrong in people coming for your church wedding, and after the church service you thank them & go your way with your newly wedded wife? Why has so many people allowed the society to continue to detect to them how to do things that pertain their personal life? Well, my friends said it's the worst thing you will do to any woman. Maybe the women in here will explain that to us men.

I have once witnessed a wedding during a mid-week church service. I mean we all came for the normal mid-week service and after the preaching, the pastor called the couple and said to us a wedding is about to happen now and that we are witnesses to the wedding. I couldn't believe it but it happened.

My view on this is; If you're not financially buoyant enough to do the usual "Nigeria kind of church wedding", you can still do a church wedding only without the reception part of it. I don't think it's mandatory. And who says it must be on a Saturday only? You & your prospective spouse can decide to wed on a Thursday evening, with a little get together for strictly family & friends.

I place more value on the woman I will get married to & our marriage more than the wedding itself. A man that doesn't have enough today to do an elaborate wedding can have more than enough tomorrow to do a lavish 10 years wedding anniversary.

Kindly share your views with us.

IF you are not financially balance, pls stop any thought of marriage. "Its true that many finance will go in as a result of cost of reception but hey!! marriage is a good thing and people that have been invited will come and celebrate with you and dance, laugh and wish the union good luck. Now how can people celebrate without having fun and something to eat and drink? so you see my bro, the reception is important and paramout. Even the first miracle JESUS perform in the bible was at a marriage reception.

Well, I believe there's no universal acceptable standard for marriage, it all depends on what you can afford to do provided the legal requirement has been met. And I believe doing what you can only afford has nothing to do with "mediocrity" .

I once witnessed the wedding of an erstwhile senior college in school who saved up alawee of about seven months to carry out a wedding. That was the most ridiculous wedding I have ever witnessed in my life because, this you man went out his ways to satisfy the wife's fantasies with the meagre he budgeted for the wedding.

Imagine, somebody that didn't have more than 100k for a wedding was coerced by his wife to do a traditional marriage, church marriage and they still went as far as buying aso ebi shocked. On that day, both chairs rental service, cameramen and photographers disappointed them because they were not given advance payment. It was so ridiculous that people were just shaking their heads for them in disappointment to have brought them to suffer under the scorching sun. In fact, we all hung around and sat on okada, parked vehicles, etc. Those who were thirsty used their own money to buy pure water and soft drinks.

What I'm trying to bring out from this is that, it would have made a lot of sense if he only did a court marriage and made a little refreshment available for the few people in attendance, and he will go home with his wife other than bring shame upon himself. Case closed!

So, I believe following the crowd always put people in obscurity, because, life is all about doing what you can afford to do, not doing following the crowd just to impress anyone.

If you can afford to do an elaborate wedding, ride on, and if you can't, settle for what you can afford

Nothing is mandatory once the couple is officially married. If the legal requirrements have been met it's up to the couple what happens.
