10. The newly wedded couple with their friends, maids that died in a tanker explosion, one of the worst ever multi-vehicle accidents, killing between 100 and 200 people near Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, November, 2000.

The accident occurred outside Ibadan, on a stretch of motorway connecting Ibadan and Ife in Osun State to the East, about 250 km north of Lagos.

Nigeria suffers heavy traffic circulation problems, and this day was no exception, with a large traffic jam covering all lanes of the road and numerous pedestrians weaving in between them including the the new couple.

A large petrol tanker, carrying fuel was travelling on the same road at high speed, when it suddenly encountered the traffic jam and attempted to come to a halt.

At this point, the poorly maintained vehicle suffered a total brake failure, and ploughed straight into the queue of cars ahead including the motorcade of the newly wedded couple.

The numbers killed in the initial collision were probably high, but they will never be known, because the tanker, which had finally come to rest on its side had begun to leak its highly flammable load onto the roadway.

Within seconds, this trail was alight, and the tanker disappeared in an enormous fireball, which rose above the city and devastated a wide area around the accident scene.

Those still in their cars were trapped in the crash wreckage and burnt alive.

Those who tried to escape were also burnt till they fell, those standing too close were immolated instantly, while those further away were burnt to death or hit by flying shrapnel from the blast.

Burning wreckage caused several small fires in nearby suburbs.

The police and other rescue services did not offer any assistance until some time after the blast, and so numerous bodies were removed by relatives or volunteer rescuers and privately buried, whilst others were simply vapourised in the initial explosion or cremated in the fire that followed.

Incredible but true! I have a family friend who survived the inferno that day. I think he recovered fully after about two years or thereabout cos he sustained serious burns. What saved him was his doggedness cos he ran through the fire according to his testimony. He was sitting at the front seat beside the driver of the bus he boarded that day.

7. The bride who drowned during her wedding photo shoot.

In 2012, a woman taking part in a "trash the dress" wedding photo shoot drowned after being pulled underwater by the weight of her wedding gown while snapping pictures in a river near Dorwin Falls in Quebec.

Photographer Louis Pagakis said 30-year-old Maria Pantazopoulos entered the Ouareau River in her wedding dress so she could have her picture taken in the style of wedding photography meant to symbolize that permanence of the marriage.

But the dress quickly became saturated, and the weight of it was simply too much for the 100-pound Pantazopoulos, who began to sink to the bottom.

The photographer and a witness tried to save her but were unsuccessful.

A scuba diver later found Pantzopoulos' body at the bottom of a nearby stagnant pool of water.

In this part of the world, na mami water carry am go! So heartwrenching for the groom

I can't help but notice that most of the victims were the bride or their relatives.

The 51 wedding guests who where killed by a suicide bomber.

This is the haunting image of a mass grave dug for some of the 51 guests who were killed while dancing at a wedding in Gaziantep, Turkey.

The killer, who wore an explosive belt, was between 12-14 years old.

It was Turkey's deadliest bombing of 2016.12 people were buried the day after the attack, but other funerals had to wait because many of the victims were blown to pieces and DNA was the only way to identify them.
Religion of peace (should I say pieces) strikes again SMH.

You 'think'? this should not even be debatable. He's one of the best, most intelligent people on Nairaland, if not the overall best.

I hope he gets paid for what he does here or at least rewarded in some way, because his selflessness and dedication to research before posting stuffs, interesting stuff, is top-notch.

big up, Explorers!
he should open a blog I will gladly visit

Dear Lord in heaven! May God rest their souls and heal the hearts that still greave. May our paths be cleared of blood thirsts. It is well.
