FG orders immediate separation of CRK, IRK in new curriculum

The Federal Government on Thursday bowed to pressure and directed the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to separate the Christian Religious Knowledge and Islamic Religious Knowledge subjects in the basic education curriculum.

The grouping of IRK and CRK under the Civil Education in the new curriculum by the NERDC had generated controversy in the last few months with religious leaders calling for their separate teaching.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, gave the directive at a meeting of Ministers of Education with education stakeholders from six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting, which was attended by Commissioners for Education from various States of the Federation, was part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the partnership within the three tiers of government in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 4 (SDG4).

Adamu, who was represented by Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwukah, said the directive to separate the subjects became necessary because of the various complaints by Nigerians, especially the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that has been vociferous about the issue.

He explained that the collapse of the two subjects was done by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to reduce the number of subjects offered by pupils and students in schools.

The minister said: “There is this controversy over the merger of CRK and IRK in the school curriculum. There were complaints by parents that children were overloaded with so many subjects and the recommendation then was to merge one or two subjects. Unfortunately, water and oil were merged together and it is not working. “So, to save ourselves the agony, the two subjects should be separated. We push that to the NERDC,”

Adamu, in his address, reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to revamping the education sector and appealed to state governments as well as relevant stakeholders to support the federal government effort.

He also expressed the commitment of the government towards achieving the SDG4 by 2030 in line with the global timeline. The minister said Nigeria has selected the Goal 4 of the SDGs, which emphasizes inclusive and quality education for all and promotion of lifelong learning, for implementation in view of the importance of education as a fulcrum to national development.

He said the federal government was aware that in the journey towards achieving the Education 2030 Agenda, key issues including the phenomenon of out-of-school children, insecurity in and around the schools and infrastructure decay must be addressed.

The minister said there was also the need to have credible and reliable data, and how to address the challenge of poor teacher quality as well as teacher gaps, low carrying capacity in tertiary institutions, and poor learning outcomes.

“We recognize that the task of revamping the education sector is challenging, the ministry of education cannot do it alone. Our task is to coordinate national efforts to meet our national goals and objectives.

“It is our believe that with good planning, appropriate investment of resources, transparency, due process, effective collaboration and coordination of inputs and activities of government and that of all stakeholders, we will realize our vision of providing quality education to build and sustain adequate human capital for national development,” the minister added.

We shall continue to resist every attempt whether overtly or covertly, actively or passively to islamize Nigeria. If they have any such plans, they should just wait a little longer until we restore Biafra then they can do whatever they like with Nigeria

1. Buhari has no power to REGULATE RELIGION in Nigeria.
2. Buhari has no power to SEIZE people's tribal lands as GRAZING lands for his own minority Fulani tribe.

This feels a great achievement to the gullible masses; how does this better the life of the common Nigerian?

Nigerians have become so wise and politically conscious that only a few know their problems. Most think their problems are limited number of states or LGA, the president did not come from their region etc.

Only a few realise they don't have good social amenities, security and legislations that doesn't favour them but those the steals their common wealth.

That's a good one.

However, I think Islamic studies should be entirely phased out.

By continuing with that subject, we are at the risk of producing radicalized elements that would one day become terrorists and turn around to hunt down the nation that shelters them.

A better subject like Cake making or Tailoring should be cut out from Home Economics and put in place of Islamic studies. cool

.
Themandator:
Cooking sense has prevailed ..... You can't purport to have merged both only to open another window for one of them to be taught as a separate subject as so called Arabic ... Without a corresponding Greek or Hebrew language study
. For Gods sake, how many Christians in Nigeria know a single with in Hebrew language?

It is only in Nigeria that you have Acting President a Christian; Speaker of the House of Representatives a Christian; Finance Minister a Christian; Chief Justice of the Federation a Christian; CBN Governor a Christian; Minister of Petroleum a Christian; Deputy Senate President a Christian; Secretary to the Government of the Federation a Christian; Chief of Defence Staff a Christian; Chief of Naval Staff a Christian; DG of Nigeria Intelligence Agency a Christian, and Head of Civil Service of the Federation a Christian, yet you hear lies and propaganda that the President wants to Islamize the country. Please, what is wrong with our elites? Must they continue to support and enjoy corruption at all cost at the expense of the nation?

It does not take a smart person to figure out that our government is silly. They take one step forward, three leaps backwards. IRK AND CRK SHOULD BE SCRAPPED AND REPLACED BY CIVIC EDUCATION OR WHATEVER NON RELIGIOUS ALTERNATIVE. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY WE WILL MOVE FORWARD

The shameless lies they keep repeating about GEJ is most disgusting.

Yes, GEJ ordered a review of the school curriculum but he did not approve the evil agenda of merging CRK nor the controversial Arabic Studies. Those were later mischievously inserted by the Buhari govt to fulfill Buhari's devilish agenda.

Buhari is evil.

Religion, the opium of the masses.

Africa doesnt need such subjects in her schools. All these subjects do is to create a religious divide.
Comparative religion should b taught instead. That way, the kids would learn to appreciate and respect all religions.

We are extremely religious people.

We are one of the most corrupt people.

Africa! Oh my Africa!

Can't they just remove both and let our future generation live in peace and harmony, and not having to believe in Middle-East religions.

History should be made more of a compulsory subject instead of some fictitious story that re now subjects.

It will be more a great priviledge if they re first thought the history of how religion got to Africa. Then definitely sure they would be wise enough to make decisions

Unlike our generation that imbibed it by imposition and inherit
