BMW continues to develop a new flagship crossover: “ordinary” roof and three rows of seats

The Bavarian manufacturer is gearing up for the next SUV, the X8. It is expected to hit the market at the end of 2021.

Rumors of a new flagship crossover in the BMW lineup emerged after the X7 iPerformance show car was unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. There is still no official confirmation, but it is expected that the new product will be a crossover named X8, because in the current X-line there is a SUV with numbers from 1 to 7. It is also assumed that the model will have a full-fledged “hot” version with an increase in the form the letters M (all crossovers of the brand have them, except for the X1).

Back in the spring of this year, information about the names of new products was indirectly confirmed by an application that the Bavarian manufacturer filed with the German patent office: we are talking about the right to a new trademark – X8 M. It is assumed that the “ordinary” X8 will be released at the end of next year, and its »Version will appear in 2022.

Initially, it was assumed that the BMW X8 (in accordance with current trends) will receive a coupe-like body, but now the British Autocar reports that the future flagship will retain the traditional “square” roofline, although it will probably be a little more sloping. compared to the X7.

The BMW X8 will probably retain three rows of seats: the cabin can be designed for either seven riders or six, in which case the driver and passengers will have luxurious captain’s chairs.

Previously, it was assumed that the X8 will receive a platform that will be developed from scratch in the M Performance division. Waiting for Apple to crash: iPhone maker will flood the world with electric cars

Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group has unveiled its own open source MIH electric vehicle platform. New models from Yulon Motor (owner of the infamous Luxgen brand) will be the first to try it on, but in the future, every tenth electric car in the world will have the MIH platform – at least Foxconn management counts on this.

Foxconn is the main assembler of the legendary iPhones of Apple, just not everyone knows that Apple itself does not produce anything, but orders components and assembly from contractors. Judging by the overwhelming criticism of the recently introduced iPhone 12, Foxconn’s smartphone capacities may not be fully loaded in the future, but the Taiwanese company is already on the path of diversification and spoke about its Napoleonic plans in the auto business.

Last Friday, Foxconn Technology Group showed the world its own modular electric vehicle platform MIH (the manufacturer did not tell how this abbreviation stands), which it intends to sell to everyone, and the first named client was the Taiwanese company Yulon Motor. There are other customers, but Foxconn does not want to disclose their names yet, although at the beginning of the year Reuters announced the intention of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to create a joint venture with Foxconn for the production of electric vehicles.

FCA will soon enter into an alliance with French Groupe PSA, which has its own promising eVMP electromobility platform, so it’s not very clear why the Italian-American company needed Foxconn, but the MIH platform can and should interest other automakers who want to save money on the development of electric trains. …

In terms of hardware, MIH is a typical modular skateboard platform with front, rear or all-wheel drive. The power of the electric motors ranges from 95 to 350 kW (129-476 hp). The main feature is the open source software, thanks to which customers can customize the MIH platform as they please. “We want to be a kind of Android system for the auto industry,” said Yang Liu, head of Foxconn.

The first production electric vehicles on the MIH platform will see the world in 2022 (they will be released by Yulon Motor) and will have a traditional lithium-ion battery, and in 2024 Foxconn plans to switch to more capacious and lighter solid-state batteries, which are being developed in cooperation with the Chinese company CATL and Indian SES. By 2027, every tenth electric vehicle in the world should be based on the MIH platform. By then, the Boston Consulting Group estimates that the global electric vehicle market should reach 36 million units per year.

Well, now the manufacturer has declassified information about the “stuffing” of another hybrid modification of the model – Turbo S E-Hybrid.

The Turbo S E-Hybrid is now the most powerful Panamera and also the second highest performance Porsche to date. The new plug-in hybrid is based on a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with 571 hp output, which works in tandem with a 136-horsepower electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The total system power is 700 hp and the maximum torque is 870 Nm.

Porsche has equipped the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid with a new 17.9 kWh battery (previously 14.1 kWh). The power reserve per charge in a purely electric mode is about 50 km (the calculation was carried out according to the WLTP cycle).

The new hybrid liftback and the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (with the standard Sport Chrono package) accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds: 0.2 seconds faster than its predecessors. And their maximum speed due to the new “filling” has increased by 5 km / h and is now equal to 315 km / h.

In addition, in the Panamera family there is another hybrid version 4 E-Hybrid, where the electric motor works in conjunction with a 2.9-liter V6 twin-turbo engine with 330 hp. (total power – 462 hp). Such a performance gains the first “hundred” in 4.4 seconds, and its “maximum speed” is 280 km / h. Another variant with a traditional internal combustion engine is the Panamera 4S, the power of its “filling” is 440 hp. With the Sport Chrono Package, acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h takes 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 295 km / h.

Tesla launches “full autopilot” for a select few

Tesla, as promised, uploaded a beta version of its FSD (Full Self-Driving) program this week to a limited number of the “most experienced and cautious” drivers, but early news from the fields indicates that the selection of volunteers was not very careful.

You don’t have to be Nostradamus to predict that not all Tesla drivers will do this, which means we can expect new accidents on autopilot. And again Tesla will have nothing to do with it, because the driver is formally responsible for safety, no matter what smart assistants and programs the car is equipped with.

In FSD mode, Tesla displays a digitized world around it. The virtual model is based on neural network data received from other cars and processed by artificial intelligence, navigation data and data from artificial vision organs of a car.
